And German politics and just focus on the President he’s already paid for and turning X into a toxic wasteland.

Yes all the people who don't agree with freedom of speech and were not used to seeing an opposing opinion dropped off, while those who do see the importance of free speech were drawn in.

It's not that at all. X has become a right wing echo chamber more famous nowadays for suppressing views and spreading misinformation than actual freedom of speech.

Musk changed the X algorithm to deboost negative content, free speech?

Well, no, not 'grim' at all. Just politics.
Frankly, I can't think of anything more 'grim' than a minor being anxlly rxped by multiple men. That's the issue here.
As an aside, though, would you mind anyone 'throwing dirt' if we still had a Tory govt? I suspect I already know the answer to that question...

No one said it was as grim as that, however using those poor girls to piss about on twitter throwing shade at Starmer is pretty despicable

Absolutely this. Those falling for Musk’s sudden dose of humanity aren’t very bright.

He has just said that Farage isn't a leader and for Reform to choose a new one!

Yep - Elons got a bit of a low tolerance for boredom so needed to engender a bit more conflict on a dull sunday afternoon

Plus of course Elons displeasure over Farage refusal to follow his lead and endorse Tommeh two names

Simply not true.

Deboost NOT delete like what was happening to right wing voices before he took over. So yes, free speech.

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/01/2025 14:49

BIossomtoes · 05/01/2025 14:26

Tice has had his turn.

Not really. Tice was the leader when Reform was out of power. Once Farage had a chance of a seat, he shoved Tice out of the way and took over. He was able to do this because he was the majority owner of Reform UK.

The Reform UK Party had no say in it. They still have no mechanism for party members to have a say in the leadership. Tice is well known and popular with members due to his show on GB News.

Here's a big IMO for that post

SerendipityJane · 05/01/2025 14:57

Musk dissing Farage ? Oh, my aching sides.

I wonder if the media are going to suddenly experience a Farage Famine now ?

You mean you like it that he reinstated right wing voices lik the TR/SYL's account?

And deboosting is fine with you too?

Of course I like it, because I believe all voices should be heard, as I believe in freedom of speech.
I'd rather the deboosting didn't happen but I repeat it is not the same as outright deletion of comments like they were doing to 'right wing' opinions when it was Twitter.

Do you see Freedom of Speech as absolute then?

I believe freedom of speech is crucial, unfortunately we don't have real freedom of speech in this country.

Returning to the thread title ...

To want Elon Musk to stay the fuck out of U.K. politics?

I've had a bit of a Damascene conversion, and think Musks actions in UK politics are actually a really good thing.

Anyone who calls out Farage as a fraudster must have some smarts.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 05/01/2025 15:15

randomchap · 05/01/2025 13:20

Well if you don't understand after reading the thread, there's nothing else I can add.

I didn't understand, but I was just talking about it with my son and I think I do now.

I think there are genuinely some people who are angrier with Elon Musk for highlighting mass rapes and institutional cover-ups, than they are with the rapists and the apologists. I think they feel that way because winning some kind of strange game of zero sum politics is more important to them than the wrecked lives of children.

In my posts above I said that such a stance was sociopathic, but that was rude and I shouldn't have said that. I don't blame the people who feel that way - I blame social media. It's like, maybe they've been playing zero sum politics games on social media for so long, my side's better than your side, nah nah, that something's been knocked out of true in the brain or their soul, or wherever the moral compass lives. And so now they can't see beyond the fact that someone they don't like has highlighted a massive, systemic abuse, and because of that, they're angrier with the messenger than with the perpetrators.

It's a terrible thing to happen really. I hope it never happens to me. But maybe it will. I think it is intensely sad.

The abuse had already been highlighted, and there was a big inquiry into child sex abuse in England and Wales (Scotland and NI have separate legal systems)

It doesn't need more highlighting, especially by a man who's using it to attack a government he doesn't like.

It needs the recommendations from the enquiry acting upon.

The report came out in 2022 and the government in power did nothing, the new government has said they will implement the recommendations.

If you were unaware of the inquiry/abuse before Musk got involved, then that's on you.

Your articles prove my point. Did you read them yourself?

Yes I did. Musk is suppressing posts, individuals and organisations critical of him. How is that the promotion of freedom of speech?

It isn't and it's one of the main reasons users are leaving X.

Three Girls drew a hug amount of attention to the issue of grooming gangs. It was widely talked about at the time. It also won loads of awards. Maybe if you weren't in the UK you would be less aware.

Edited

Removing a blue tick or demonetising a user is not the same as deleting accounts and comments. These people still have access to the platform and express their opinions, other social media platforms do not allow this.

If users were leaving X for this reason why on Earth would they have stayed on it before when there was no freedom of speech at all? Because the real reason they are leaving is that they are finally being exposed to differing views and they don't like it.

ContactNightmare · 05/01/2025 15:33

Yes. The inquiry also dealt with abuse in other settings in state run care homes. I hope all the recommendations are finally implemented and proper compensation given to the victims at last as a result of multiple failures and harm done.

Sexual offending in this country is not punished. From possession of child abuse materials where offenders get community sentences to cases where cultural sensitivity means very little is done.

I would like any of these cheap tweets to turn into some positive funding for the trauma these children experienced, not some grift for a few racists who take the opportunity to complain about being oppressed.

I was definitely very aware, I've posted on MN fairly extensively under this handle and another one about my being a survivor of CSA and my subsequent addiction problems and how they made me vulnerable to further abuse by predatory men. I've also posted about the work I do to help other vulnerable women in Narcotics Anonymous.

I disagree with you that this issue doesn't need more highlighting. I think it does, a LOT more! It's easily one of the biggest failures of the British State in modern history. It really has had very little public and media discussion and scrutiny compared with its severity.

I don’t like Farage but he isn’t a convicted criminal and sex offender. For whatever reason it suits Musk to support people like Trump and Robinson. Ironic that he’s kicking off about grooming gangs whilst supporting a sex trafficker. It’s fucking mental that some people think he’s some sort of heroic friend to women and girls.
