XL bully shot

louisbalfournice · 07/12/2024 19:40

Local XL bully shot today. The owner is saying on social media that the dog was harmless but I've seen it go for a a small child before. Why are these dogs 'harmless" until they injure or kill

Bloody hell. That actually looks like a monster! Many of them don’t.

I disagree, it looks like a sweet pupster, it has lovely colouring and it is absolutely NOT its fault it has been bred the way it has and has no choice in the way it acts due to its breeding. HUMANS are to blame as to why it is wired to react so badly.

Having said that, I don't think this breed should exist and I sadly do think they should all be euthanised because they are very unpredictable and are so large that they can kill without thought, even if an individual seems lovely.

MiddleClassWomanOfACertainAge · 07/12/2024 20:10

Presumably it wasn't the owner who got bitten then? In which case, how does he get to have an opinion on whether the brute was harmless or not?

I've met tiny terriers that have scared me more than most of the XL bullies I've met.

It's not the breed it's the owners. XLBs are popular with roadmen for defensive purposes.

Not an XL, but the best dogs I've ever met were staffies.

It really is the breed though.

My DS friends parents have just got one. He won’t be going to their house anymore. They have a baby as well, just ridiculous. Comments on their fb posts like “welcome to the bully club”. 🤢

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/12/2024 20:10

If the owner was going to be prosecuted for anything relating to it, you've just ensured they can't be guaranteed a fair trial, as any jury member could have seen the photo and read your claims.

Well done.

ScorpioRising83 · 07/12/2024 20:11

No pets that could kill an adult? So no mastiffs then? No German shepherds? Rottweilers?

Apparently they have more pet tigers in Texas than in all the zoos in all the world. I learned that recently but I've never seen any pearl clutching about it.

LuckysDadsHat · 07/12/2024 20:12

Locally to me was someone crying and moaning on a locsl facebook group that she had to move house and her new house wouldn't accept her XLB and she didn't know what she was going to do etc..... as she couldn't have him put to sleep. The amount of idiots asking if the dog was OK with kids and if so they would have him astounded me. How can people offer to have these dogs in the house with their kids. Idiots.

They don't take the tigers for walks in public places!

All XL bully's should be put to sleep.

One less XL Bully is a very good thing. We’ll celebrate when there are 0 left.

How can you possibly think it's a dogs breed? It's a human problem @ACynicalDad The owners can't train them or train them inappropriately because they're AHs. Many XL bullies are great family dogs because their owners have trained them!

Really fed up it's an issue about a dog when it's their fg owners that should be jailed and banned from owning any pets.

@louisbalfournice I hadn't picked up the news, it's sad but I doubt the dog could be retrained to stop attacking, which it's most likely done because it was triggered by fear or anxiety. The owner who's claiming it was harmless is an AH and should be prosecuted.

Photo

Today's shooting was in Sheffield wasn't it?

The pic you've linked is from a US website, and widely believed to be a manipulated image.

Is there a pic of the dog that was shot today?

Sab06 · 07/12/2024 20:15

Good! They should all be banned and the gov should issue prison sentences to owners. Recently, an XLB attacked and killed its owner. I have kids and constantly on my guards if we pass an XLB. They really do scare me!

Jesus F.ing Christ - you’ve met terriers that you think could kill you? What a load of F.ing nonsense.

Report them then as if they’ve only just got it they’ve got it illegally .

wildmushrooms · 07/12/2024 20:17

There's always one breed of dog that the world claims to be "dangerous" it just seems to change every few years to a different one.

XL bullies and jack russels (other small breeds) can all attack and be unpredictable, the problem with XL bullies is the size of them and what damage they can do when they bite.

I own a Staffordshire bull terrier and a miniture sausage dog and my sausage dog is much more likely to bite. My Staffordshire has never even growled at a human before.

No dog deserves to be shot, people should be tested first to check if they are able to provide and look after a dog properly and not use it for "intimidation"

Many are great family dogs until they kill their owner or someone else - then it kind of all goes to shit doesn’t it.

Good riddance.
They should all be shot.

Pitbulls and staffy crosses are pretty tiny compared to an XL bully

Do you really think those dogs couldn't attack and potentially kill? If not, why is pitbull a banned breed?

It's from the owners family pictures that they posted on several local social media

Yes these dogs are not allowed to be rehomed.

Whaleandsnail6 · 07/12/2024 20:19

I used to think that "its the way you raise them..." And not down to breed. I dont anymore.

I think all xl bullies should be put to sleep. I think they are all ticking time bombs and don't think they should be in homes or allowed out in public, even muzzled.

When there was fireworks one in our local area got out off lead (it panicked and pulled out of owners hand and apparently lost its muzzle when it got free) and the owner was appealing for help finding it. It was described as a lovely family pet and fortunately was found safe and well with no issues, but I wouldnt let my kids out round our estate when I knew it was roaming. I dont trust them at all.

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 07/12/2024 20:21

It's awful, there was another human death a few days ago according to the BBC.

Not kill, but injure. Could do more harm to a kid. Showing much aggression. I've met more terriers I believed would attack than bullys. Probably because nobody bothers to train small dogs.

Not to say I've not met some bullys who I was scared would attack, they belonged to roadmen who eventually got nicked and the dogs removed. They all knew each other and one bred his bully. They trained them to attack in their defence and to hunt wildlife.

I don't think it's possible to breed a dog to be aggressive, just as you don't breed a dog to herd sheep or sniff out cocaine or lead blind people. You can breed them to be trainable for these things, but the way they're handled is more important.

Other breeds injure and kill people too.

Bully attacks always get reported where other breeds might not, because of the debate around them, the media is biased.

When I was a kid it was Rottweilers. Don't hear much about them these days

Sophiasguitar · 07/12/2024 20:25

Your story just adds weight to it being the owners rather than the dogs that are the problem. Dog panicked, escaped and lost its muzzle. Owners said it was a lovely dog. Turns out it was.
