Annual Xmas movie argument has started, help me settle it once and for all!

YANBU - Die Hard is an action movie that happens to be set at Xmas therefore does not count as a xmas movie

YABU - Die Hard is obviously a Xmas movie!

Every single year me, my ex, all the kids and my DSis and BIL all argue (good naturedly) about this!

A movie set at Xmas doesnt automatically become a Xmas movie though. Home Alone is as its premise is about Xmas, but Die Hard is about terrorist being taken down by an action hero! Not the same!

No in my estimation watching Bruce Willis getting hot and sweaty is definitely NOT a Xmas move, it’s about as Christmassy as Rambo and that has snowy running scenes but no one calls that an Xmas Movie,

If Christmas features anywhere in the film it is a Christmas film.

I guess it ultimately depends on your definition of a Christmas movie.

If you think Christmas time + decorations + Christmas songs + occasional festive references makes a Christmas film then yes, it is.

However, if you believe a Christmas movie embraces the genuine spirit of Christmas (It's a Wonderful Life, Santa Claus the Movie etc) then no, it is not.

Dh always claims this is a Christmas film, I don’t bother arguing. Either way it’s a great film and the 3 main characters John, Holly & Bruce are all well cast.

Thats a good way to put it. I just think that a film set at Easter (say) which was about a bank robbery, wouldnt be classed as an Easter film would it? So why is Die Hard a xmas movie?

Yabu. The plots of Die Hard and Home Alone are essentially the same story!

Well it’s set at Christmas and centres around Holly’s Christmas party. However it doesn’t exactly have Father Christmas, elves, goodwill to all men, let’s all saviour the magic of Christmas and the miracle of life at it’s core.

It takes place on Christmas Eve
It has christmas songs
It's about a Father trying to keep his wife safe/get back to his kids, seems pretty much in the spirit to me

So yes it is a christmas film

Don't get why anyone likes die hard...I have up on it...the bits I saw were not Xmas movie....it's not the Muppets Christmas carol, home alone, love actually... gremlins is also not a Christmas movie..

It's as much a Christmas as Home Alone. And my all time favourite Christmas movie!
