YANBU - Die Hard is an action movie that happens to be set at Xmas therefore does not count as a xmas movie

YABU - Die Hard is obviously a Xmas movie!

Every single year me, my ex, all the kids and my DSis and BIL all argue (good naturedly) about this!

StandingSideBySide · 02/12/2024 21:57

The Sound of Music is the only war film where I cheer for the Germans.

Oh I am with you. There is only so much treacle I can take.

"The HIIIILLLLS are ali.." off.

Thats about how far through it I am prepared to go now! Every. Fucking. Xmas.

Ah.....now that might just be enough to get me to change my mind!!

But Alan Rickman cancelled Christmas in Prince of Thieves!

QueSyrahSyrah · 02/12/2024 22:01

(Now) DH and I had this same argument on our second date which happened to be the week before Christmas. I asked him back to mine to watch it and settle the argument and he ultimately never left Blush

We still disagree. It's not a Christmas movie.

nocoolnamesleft · 02/12/2024 22:01

Actually this came up in conversation with my brother last night: we are both firmly of the opinion that Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Though, for the sake of honesty, I should possibly reveal that his other half disagrees...

Bruce in a vest is obviously about Christmas.
It's what Jesus wanted.

Best answer!

Love51 · 02/12/2024 22:15

It's about a man reconciling with his estranged family. Which is basically an allegory of the gospels (especially if you subscribe to the "only 7 plots" school of thought).

The thing I find shocking is that they are having a works Christmas party on Christmas eve. Either you work in an industry that is super busy at that time (bars, shops, police, hospitality) in which case no party, you're busy, or you should all go home at least an hour before normal finish time. Nakatomi is ran by Ebenezer Scrooge.

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 02/12/2024 22:19

Absolutely not a Christmas movie. Dh hides a cardboard cutout around the house throughout December because he thinks that he is hilarious.

I remember thinking that when I watched it "Do none of these people have kids?!"

Die Hard is definitely not a Christmas film. DH disagrees but he's obviously wrong.

Scutterbug · 02/12/2024 22:27

It’s not a Christmas movie. And it’s shit.

GridlockonMain · 02/12/2024 22:28

A movie is only a Christmas movie if the fact that it’s Christmas is in some way a relevant feature of or integral to the plot. So, for example, you’ve got mail isn’t a Christmas movie even though it has charming and sentimental scenes of Christmas, because the fact that part of it happens around Christmas time isn’t necessary for the plot.

Some will argue that Die Hard does fit this definition because the reason everyone is gathered at the Nakatomi Plaza, and for John McClane’s return, is that it’s a holiday party. But I disagree. They could have used any excuse for the party - a successful business deal, the retirement of the big boss, an acquisition - and it would have had the exact same effect on the plot. Christmas is a convenient excuse but not integral to the plot. Ergo, not a Christmas movie.

RJnomore1 · 02/12/2024 22:30

Yippee-Kay-yay motherfucker!

you are, for once, wrong my friend 😃

Gremlinsateit · 02/12/2024 22:31

Team xmas movie. Estranged husband flies in to spend xmas with his wife “Holly” and 2 adorable tots, saves them all from unexpected dangers against the background of the work xmas drinks, says “ho ho ho”, makes a new friend, and reconciles.

AndThereSheGoes · 02/12/2024 22:37

I've never seen it.

Non Christmas Christmas movies are really only Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music and The Great Escape. Because there was literally no other choices.

By 1988 we had Channel 4, Sky started the year after and videos were popular.

ByMerryKoala · 02/12/2024 22:39

Christmas Music - check
Christmas Decorations - check
Christmas Party - check
Story of a redeemed relationship - check
One of the characters has a festive name - check

It's a Christmas movie

I knew from the thread title this would be about Die Hard...

It's a Christmas movie...it's about redemption and reuniting with family for the Christmas period.

You have articulate my feelings in a far more eloquent and intelligent way than I have ever managed with an exasperated "Its set AT Xmas but its not ABOUT xmas FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!!"

So I thank you!

But this is WHY it is not only a Christmas movie, but the best Christmas movie.

Movies that are actually about Christmas are invariably dire. That is why so many people will not give an inch on this. Anything to have a Christmas movie you don’t want run away from screaming.
