YANBU - Die Hard is an action movie that happens to be set at Xmas therefore does not count as a xmas movie

YABU - Die Hard is obviously a Xmas movie!

Every single year me, my ex, all the kids and my DSis and BIL all argue (good naturedly) about this!

It's a Christmas movie, just like Home Alone is a Christmas movie. It just lacks that Hallmark vibe of women in fluffy jumpers nibbling on candy canes and fir-tree-shaped iced cookies. Which is not a bad thing.

YABU

Not only is it a Christmas movie it’s the best Christmas movie ever.

This 👆

It is, in fact, the only Christmas film worth watching.

A movie set at Xmas doesnt automatically become a Xmas movie though. Home Alone is as its premise is about Xmas, but Die Hard is about terrorist being taken down by an action hero! Not the same!

Is Jesus not an action hero who fights against Satan? 😀

Well as a die hard (ha!) fan of Andy Hamiltons Old Harrys Game, I would disagree with that too!

JingleB · 02/12/2024 23:12

It’s in the Disney+ montage of Christmas movies they are promoting. If the studio calls it a Christmas movie, I think you have to concede the point, @PyongyangKipperbang

Christmas is essential to the plot. John has only flown (he hates flying) so he can see his kids for Christmas; he and Holly are estranged.

He attends the Christmas party. The reason the heist happens is because the head of Nakatomi is there for the party, and they will have loads of hostages in an otherwise empty building.

John goes through trials and tribulations to reunite his family in time for Christmas.

Clearly a Christmas movie, just an unconventional one.

Parrotting · 02/12/2024 23:12

I love Die Hard and it is clearly a Christmas movie. The time of year is integral to the plot and tone of the film.

Emptyspiral · 03/12/2024 00:00

Nope, not a Christmas movie. I will die on that hill with you OP 🤣

Yabu. The plots of Die Hard and Home Alone are essentially the same story!

I hadn't ever thought this but you are absolutely right!

mamajong · 03/12/2024 00:13

Yabu. It's not just a Christmas movie, it's THE Christmas movie!

Onlyvisiting · 03/12/2024 00:14

Tbh I think you (and nearly everyone else pm this thread) are mostly and unforgivably unreasonable by calling them bloody movies!
It's FILM. Thankyouverymuch

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/12/2024 00:16

I’ll happily watch Alan Rickman any time of year. So yes, it’s a Christmas movie.

YES! I never call them movies, they're films.

A movie set at Xmas doesnt automatically become a Xmas movie though. Home Alone is as its premise is about Xmas, but Die Hard is about terrorist being taken down by an action hero! Not the same!

But what about "the holiday". People love that movie and call it a Christmas movie, but it's not about Christmas at all. It's about a house swap.🤷‍♀️

So many Xmas films are shite.

Let us have a good one!!!

100%

It's a total Xmas film and yet absolutely not.

LoveSandbanks · 03/12/2024 10:46

We have the same argument here. I’m adamant that it’s a Christmas movie, dh is equally adamant it’s not 🤣

This.

I knew as soon as I read the thread title that it would be Die Hard-related.

Sharptonguedwoman · 03/12/2024 17:53

Won’t watch it whatever so doesn’t matter for us. It’s an ok film but that’s all.

NoPaintedPony · 03/12/2024 18:18

It is a Christmas film & has to be watched after ‘Love Actually’ so it explains why Alan Rickman had to fall of the tower - poor Emma Thompson 😢

Christmas is about Jesus coming to Earth to save humanity from itself. Has more in common with Die Hard than Home Alone.

tommika · 03/12/2024 18:25

Die Hard was used as an example in a presentation on data analysis of open text, and used survey questions as an example

The types of questions went along the way of “Is X a Y?” with yes/no followed by “Why did you give that answer?” as open text

(there was also a correlation between people who think that Die Hard is not a Christmas film and find that pineapple on pizza is acceptable)

Responses on why Die Hard IS a Christmas film had more reasoning then the NOs.
Such as the screenshot below, with both explicit Christmas references due to the timing & Xmas party and reasoned responses on common Christmas film themes, and the no argument coming down to “it’s an action film”

But the argument of yes/no is a good marketing piece for the Die Hard franchise by sparking conversation and keeping awareness going
Different people have different concepts of what a Christmas film is - it could be explicit Christmas content, general family themes such as the blue highlight, easy going general family friendly, or nostalgic / family tradition of what was always watched at Christmas
