YANBU - Die Hard is an action movie that happens to be set at Xmas therefore does not count as a xmas movie

YABU - Die Hard is obviously a Xmas movie!

Every single year me, my ex, all the kids and my DSis and BIL all argue (good naturedly) about this!

I’ve been having the same argument with one of my friends for about 15 years. I say it’s not he says it is but this was on Bruce Willis comedy roast

A Christmas movie is whatever reminds you of Christmas. No matter what the plot or genre is.
Ghost stories always remind me of Christmas in the early seventies, as the BBC used to put them on every year.

Die Hard was used as an example in a presentation on data analysis of open text, and used survey questions as an example

The types of questions went along the way of “Is X a Y?” with yes/no followed by “Why did you give that answer?” as open text

(there was also a correlation between people who think that Die Hard is not a Christmas film and find that pineapple on pizza is acceptable)

Responses on why Die Hard IS a Christmas film had more reasoning then the NOs.
Such as the screenshot below, with both explicit Christmas references due to the timing & Xmas party and reasoned responses on common Christmas film themes, and the no argument coming down to “it’s an action film”

But the argument of yes/no is a good marketing piece for the Die Hard franchise by sparking conversation and keeping awareness going
Different people have different concepts of what a Christmas film is - it could be explicit Christmas content, general family themes such as the blue highlight, easy going general family friendly, or nostalgic / family tradition of what was always watched at Christmas

I refuse to accept pineapple belongs on pizza!!

I agree …… but your position on Die Hard makes you a statistical outlier

Torn on this. I do think the combined pressures on him because "it's Christmas" - and the fact he's scampering round in a vest in freezing December kind of add overall to the feel of film so I do reluctantly think it has to be classed as a Christmas film.

I don't personally find it very Christmassy - or good- but each to their own. I do class Gremlins and The Odessa File as Christmas films- partly setting, partly because I've always watched them at Christmas.

I did enjoy Die Hard the first time I saw it but I personally didn't find it really stood up to a rewatch. I napped through it. I don't really feel the need to rewatch it any time soon but DH likes it so I will. I can rewatch John Voight chasing Nazis endlessly though! Our Christmas eve tradition is watching OF with gluhwein and a party tea of German-ish Christmas goodies from Lidl.

Kentucky83 · 03/12/2024 20:19

It's a Christmas film. It's set at a Christmas party, on Christmas Eve. Christmas is crucial to the plot, therefore it is a Christmas film.

Oh I recall that series of BBC ghostly stories in the 70s, they were fabulous, especially the one where there was a dinner party and suddenly 'outside' didn't exist! If they were to make those today they would need half an hour of warnings that some people may be upset, by watching a ghost story!

JudgeJ · 03/12/2024 20:29

Re BBC ghost stories, just found them on YouTube, including The Stone Tape. I may brave them later tonight.

It's a feel good, family reunion Christmas movie set at Christmas time with lots of Christmas decorations and trees in lots of shots? Plus Bruce Willis. Who's basically the perfect man. He is also on record saying he thinks it's a Christmas movie and it's bad form to disagree with Bruce Willis. And he's in a vest.

Larryimonducktales · 03/12/2024 20:34

Littletreefrog · 02/12/2024 21:13

If Christmas features anywhere in the film it is a Christmas film.

It was thinking like this that made me watch pooka. Candy canes, cute bear. Nope.

Also a Thanksgiving film autoplayed after it that was disturbing.

Brickiscool · 03/12/2024 20:59

He writes HOHOHO on a dead body..of course it's a Christmas film! Also watch Gremlins asap 😁

And I like your username. I don't think many people have seen that film.

browneyes77 · 03/12/2024 21:14

Die Hard IS a Christmas movie.

End of discussion.

A movie set at Xmas doesnt automatically become a Xmas movie though. Home Alone is as its premise is about Xmas, but Die Hard is about terrorist being taken down by an action hero! Not the same!

No.

Die Hard is about a man trying to get home to see his wife and child at Christmas.

His journey is hindered by terrorists,

There are more, excellent new ones! Mark Gatiss has been adapting stories by the likes of MR James as A Ghost Story for Christmas on BBC for the past few years. I think last year’s is still up at the moment on iplayer.

FanfictionFan · 03/12/2024 21:50

Die Hard is a Christmas movie I watch it every year while wrapping presents. Everyone knows that Santa can't start delivering presents till Hans Gruber has fallen from Nakatomi Plaza.

I am clearly dying on a very lonely hill lol

Christmas movies a normally soapy, but yes Home alone is for example the movie of my childhood. Forever classic Love Actually. And ofcourse the movies about Jesus's birth! There should be just love sharing and no violence should apply!

Horses7 · 03/12/2024 22:25

Christmas Chronicles 1 - Kurt Russel is Santa and it’s a feel good story too - win win

TriceratopsRocks · 03/12/2024 22:54

Coconutter24 · 02/12/2024 21:28

Home alone isn’t about Christmas though really. It’s set at Christmas but it’s not about Christmas yet it’s still a Christmas film…. Like Die Hard

This is what I came here to say. For me, it's a Christmas movie if Christmas itself is important to the plot - as in, if it wasn't Christmas the film wouldn't have happened. This absolutely makes Die Hard a Christmas movie, as the whole thing is about a Dad trying to get to his kids in time for Christmas. But Home Alone could easily have been about any family holiday away from home. Therefore Home Alone is not a Christmas movie. Or at least, not as much of a Christmas movie as Die Hard. I realise this may be even more controversial 🤣

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 03/12/2024 23:00

Well it depends whether you think 'Christmas movie' means a movie that's actually about Christmas or a movie that lots of people watch at Christmas (probably because Christmas vaguely fearures in it somewhere). I think it's a Christmas movie.
