YANBU - Die Hard is an action movie that happens to be set at Xmas therefore does not count as a xmas movie

YABU - Die Hard is obviously a Xmas movie!

Every single year me, my ex, all the kids and my DSis and BIL all argue (good naturedly) about this!

  1. Day 1 - trick family into agreeing that the only allowable time to watch Christmas movies is December.
  2. Day 2 - Allow family to think they've won by announcing (without reference to conversation on Day 1) that you now accept that Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
  3. Day 3 - remind family that since Die Hard is a Christmas movie, it won't need to grace your screen again between January and November. At this point they either back down on classification and you win, or they agree that 11 months of the year must be Die-Hard-Free, and I'd call that a win!

I am clearly dying on a very lonely hill lol

Do it quietly please!

Of course it's a Christmas movie.

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/12/2024 21:27

Our xmas eve tradition (even with the actual adult kids) is to have a carpet picnic and watch Muppets CC, now THAT is a christmas film! Sweaty vests and grated feet is not!

shocked bruce willis GIF by Sky

It’s not an action movie, it’s a Christmas rom com. Grin

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/12/2024 21:12

A movie set at Xmas doesnt automatically become a Xmas movie though. Home Alone is as its premise is about Xmas, but Die Hard is about terrorist being taken down by an action hero! Not the same!

Home alone isn’t about Christmas though really. It’s set at Christmas but it’s not about Christmas yet it’s still a Christmas film…. Like Die Hard

Speaking of hills......
The sound of music is a Christmas film
And Mary poppins
And dumbo
And the great escape.

My scientific reasoning is these are the films that were always shown at Christmas and we would circle in the radio times .

ShortColdandGrey · 02/12/2024 21:30

It is a Christmas film that is also an action film.

CynicalSunni · 02/12/2024 21:34

Of course its a christmas film.

  1. Man reuniting with family for christmas after difficult journey.
  2. Gruber is basically the bloke from a wonderful life (the quintessential christmas film) that steals money.
  3. Gruber also states its christmas and time for miracles
  4. it is also set at a christmas party.

Then of course all the christmassy props/music.

Jellyslothbridge · 02/12/2024 21:35

I think you get to curate your own "these are my Christmas movies" DH stated that Lord of the rings was a Christmas movie as it has elves!

Thisisnotmyid · 02/12/2024 21:42

It’s obviously a Xmas movie. It takes place at Xmas and it’s only ever really watched at Xmas 😆

OMG you have reminded me of the Great Sound of Music Row of 1986 or around that time.

Incidentally also the first time I heard my parents say "Fuck".

The Sound of Music was on (say) BBC and Star Wars overlapped on the other side. My father and I both wanted Star Wars my mother wants SOM. Now bearing in mind the SOM was on every fucking Xmas and Star Wars was almost never shown on TV my father wouldnt let her have her own way as he usually did. This started a humungous row which culminated in him saying "THATS IT!! We are getting a video, that way everyone gets what they want" My mother is notoriously tight and wouldnt spend a penny on anything she deemed unimportant. "We dont need one, they are too expensive" "We DO need one!!" "Why?" "BECAUSE WE HAVE BEING ROWING FOR THREE HOURS ABOUT THE SOUND OF FUCKING MUSIC" and my favourite response "Dont swear about Julie Andrews!!"

Anyway he grabs the car keys to go and buy said video and she shouts "Go and buy your fucking video then but I am not using it!!". Odd thing was, within weeks she had more stuff recorded on "Mums Tape" than the rest of us put together!

YABU. Somebody told me the other day that if you watch Love Actually followed by Die Hard Alan Rickman gets his comeuppance for cheating on Emma Thompson 😂.

Onthesideofthespiders · 02/12/2024 21:47

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/12/2024 21:16

Do you mean Alan?

Don’t you mean Hans? John, Holly and Hans. Those are the characters names.
Played by Bruce, Bonnie and Alan.

You are being beyond unreasonable. Not only is Die Hard a Christmas movie, it’s THE Christmas movie! The end! Just… it just is!

Potter23 · 02/12/2024 21:49

It’s the only Xmas Christmas movie my DH will watch

he can have die hard, I’ll stick to Love Actually

Choosenandenough · 02/12/2024 21:50

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/12/2024 21:48

Yes! AND that. It’s still wasn’t enough payback though. The end of BraveHeart isn’t enough payback for what he done to Emma Thompson.

Hateam · 02/12/2024 21:51

It. Has. No. Christmas. Theme.

It. Is. Not. A. Christmas. Film.

I win so stop it NOW!!!!

Dyra · 02/12/2024 21:52

It's a Christmas movie sorry.

But not the best one. Top 10 perhaps.

The top 3 are:

  1. Muppets Christmas Carol
  2. Klaus
  3. Arthur Christmas

I eagerly await the posts telling me I'm wrong, but this is my hill and this is where I make my stand.

Hateam · 02/12/2024 21:53

The Sound of Music is the only war film where I cheer for the Germans.

TheTwirlyPoos · 02/12/2024 21:55

It's not a Christmas film!!! With you all the way OP

Edingril · 02/12/2024 21:55

Christmas movie

So you haven't seen Muppets Christmas Carol?

CrazyAndSagittarius · 02/12/2024 21:55

YABU. Die Hard 2 is also a Christmas movie.

GraceAnatomy · 02/12/2024 21:56

In my opinion, I see it is as much a Christmas movie as East 17's Stay another day is a Christmas song (and that is definitely not)

The film wasn't even released around Christmas.

Pretty sure Bruce Willis said it isn't a Christmas movie, yet others who worked on the film said it is, but this is a debate that goes round in circles every year.
