There's something weird going on in my house

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

So the household is you, husband, 3 cats,1 dog.
Sister visits daily.

Does she ever bring anyone with her?
Why have MN deleted some posts?
Could someone have sneezed the blood?

we are getting towards Halloween.

Who said that?

Who said that?

The ghost of MN has returned to haunt us 👻

MindatWork · 21/10/2024 09:38

I know OP is insisting the cat couldn't have got in the bathroom but I agree it looks like flea dirt. Our cat had this when we first got him and we thought he'd cut himself - there little red flecks all over the side of the bath where he used to sit. Until we caught him scratching and realised it was fleas 🙀.

This pic from Reddit looks very similar; it was found to be flea dirt:

Bloody hell that’s creepy OP! Could you set up a couple of extra hidden cameras that only you know about and go out and see if you catch anything? Hope you work out what’s going on, that’s very odd.

Andthesky · 21/10/2024 09:49

oakleaffy · 21/10/2024 08:39

@horseHorseHorse I still can't see that the blood would be flea dirt {how gross that people allow their pets to get so flea ridden that they drop flea dirt and flea eggs everywhere..there are effective prophylactic treatments out there.

Like you I am massively allergic to flea bites so like you treat monthly with the tablets- Someone's poodle when I visited them even for an afternoon caused a massive allergic reaction to it's fleas-

If that was flea dirt, and you were allergic, you'd know.

Looks much more like spider poop.

Whether it is flea dirt or spider shit, it is still some kind of multi legged microscopic creature, not an intruder!

This whole thread is complete madness. There is zero evidence of anything untoward except overactive imaginations. There is a logical explanation for the flecks on the cistern, and everything else is just forgetfulness.

I came downstairs this morning and found my fridge door had been left open overnight. Maybe I should start a thread? Or just accept that I didn't quite shut it fully last night.

SassK · 21/10/2024 09:52

ThePoshUns · 21/10/2024 09:18

Agree @SassK lots of people have put forward some reasonable explanations but OP seems to be ignoring those and would rather believe that someone is breaking into the house to take milk out of the fridge and love her husband's glasses

Some amount of reported/deleted posts on an entirely innocuous thread too... 😂 Must be a record!

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 21/10/2024 09:53

@Andthesky wipe the magnetic strip inside of the fridge door where it shuts and/or check it's properly attached; also check the hinges and that you haven't weighted the ends of shelves or lower shelf on the inner door too much.

No poltergeist I've known has stooped to fridge door interference. (Bedroom cupboards, yes.)

nOasistickets · 21/10/2024 09:55

Maybe it’s a ghost…. 🤣🤣🤣 Halloween is coming you know….

Thanks. It is fine. There is also a teenager in the house who has a late night milk habit, so it could just as easily be him not noticing it wasn't shut fully.

Either way, there is no such thing as poltergeists, just human error.

Was none of the stuff chewed though?

No. Stuff had gone missing. It had been dragged into the casing of the car so we couldn't see it

I was horrified to find my front door keys dangling from the Yale one morning- they had been there all afternoon and overnight.

I had been wrangling shopping and a dog in the driving rain, and in putting stuff down, and wiping dog's feet, I must have been distracted and left the keys in the lock.

Also once came down to let dog out and the kitchen was unusually warm- I'd left gas on very low in the stove- hadn't turned it off.

These things can happen.

Milk doesn't take itself out of fridges.

There was once a case where stuff was being moved in a house.

Paranormal investigator came, and a heavy indoor plant pot was repeatedly moved, to the consternation of the householder.

{Before the days of cheap indoor security cameras}

The investigator did something with fine powder and {UV?} and turned out it was the daughter of the house- she'd sneak about at night to do it.

pinklemonsparkle · 21/10/2024 10:05

It's clearly a demonic presence.

Call a priest asap.

Growlybear83 · 21/10/2024 10:10

This thread is just bonkers. Countless people have suggested that the blood-like marks could be flea or spider poo, which was my first thought, particularly given the cat hair on the cistern. I'm a bit nonplussed that anyone would be getting so concerned about the milk having been left out or glasses being moved - surely everyone occasionally leaves things out or misplaces things? I'm forever forgetting where I leave my glasses and keys, and I left the tub of butter out on the worktop on Saturday night, much to the cat's delight. Unlike some of the suggestions on here, I haven't got early onset dementia or a UTI - I'm just tired after working long hours and misplace things from time to time like everyone else I know. My house also isn't occupied by poltergeists and I haven't got someone livid in my old who can leap up and down without a ladder 😆😆😆

Growlybear83 · 21/10/2024 10:11

Oops - that should have read I haven't got someone living in my loft .

@RainbowZebraWarrior doesn’t seem to know about the link between ND and milk intolerance and allergy, assuming this is why your sister doesn’t touch milk. So the suggestion is this is a lame alibi akin to Prince Andrew’s. It’s rather a distasteful analogy tbh (sex trafficking and rape vs drinking milk)

I'm ND and didn't know about the 'link' between neurodivergence and milk intolerance / allergies either 🙄

Demonhunter · 21/10/2024 10:31

Maybe it's a phrogger, living in the attic or the walls? 🤷‍♀️

Serrendippity · 21/10/2024 10:33

Another vote for flea poo here.

There's a toilet in the utility room my cats sleep in and these spots of blood appear on it all the damn time. The cats don't have to be in the room. Any damp makes it show up more.

Time for a thorough deep clean OP.

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 21/10/2024 10:35

I think it's 2 different things
1 animal
1 human
No ghost

Fannyfiggs · 21/10/2024 10:38

Hmmm how strange. Hopefully the cameras will show it's something simple and easily explained.

Greyrockin · 21/10/2024 10:51

OP - weird things were happening to a colleague's sister. Stuff moved in her flat, things missing, etc. Turned out months later they caught a previous tenant who still had a key letting themselves in to her flat.

It's going to be someone with a key.

YarkYark · 21/10/2024 10:54

The "weird" stuff is the lights and the milk, almost certainly explained by forgetfulness. "Blood" in the bathroom by itself wouldn't raise an eyebrow, PPs have fully explained it away in many ways. Personally I bet there's an extractor fan that's dumped a load of crap out when its been windy outside - we've had exactly this and it looks just like the pictures. The events have been combined to make one story - it's (almost certainly) not.

I deliver my parish magazines and every single time, I find at least one set of keys in a front door, or doors left open and no sign of anyone home.

I came back from a weekend away about 20 years ago to find a note on my doorstep from the police. I had left the front door ajar (that one did need repairs, as it often blew open if there was a breeze - still not ghosts!) and the neighbours were concerned for my welfare.
Similarly, while my H was in the military, the MOD police went round camp over Christmas and checked everyone's doors, we got a visit from them in the new year as our back door was found unlocked. Busy parents with young kids trying to get away in a hurry because we were running late.

It is incredibly easy to do because we do so many things on autopilot, like putting the milk away, but a moment of distraction and the brain doesn't register that it hasn't completed the task. There is always a rational explanation for 'paranormal' activity.

Beesandhoney123 · 20/10/2024 23:11

That has freaked me out - how horrible. I always think our dogs would make short work of vermin intruders. Seems there is a big chance they'd be fighting me to get out the door.

Could it be a squirrel?

Lol, no, it was definitely a rather large rat. When it finally went, we found the missing tea towel down there. It also took bunches of grapes off the counter and an even a banana once, but couldn’t get them in the hole. I realise this sounds horrifying to people now, but it was decades ago and we knew it was there but weren’t that bothered at the time.

SurelySmartie · 21/10/2024 11:14

Imagine realising you’ve called the police out to investigate fleas on a cistern!

Stop, in the name of the loo!
