There's something weird going on in my house

1000 replies

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

Sorry, not read all the replies so apologise if this has been suggested already.
Blood spots looks like someone with bleeding gums and an electric toothbrush.

Lemonyyy · 20/10/2024 20:35

Rats. They can get in through drains, move things around, might have cuts on or fleas and scratching that could leave blood. We caught one that was small cat sized in our loft, sounded like a man clomping around 🤢

I can’t imagine any rat being capable of taking the milk out of the fridge and putting it on the worktop 🙄

All I can tell ya kid As an ex sailor/pirate nothing unreal exists. Having said that there are superstitious we always abide too. Never start a voyage on a Friday, do not whisle on deck and above all Never trust an old sailor... Ha
You'll be fine matey

'Hi sis! Just a quick one, can you let me know if you opened the bathroom door and/or took the milk out of the fridge when you were in the house last week? All fine either way of course - but I have already had the police in to check whether it was an intruder. So would be good to know. Oh and half of mumsnet would also like to know. Cheers, get back to me! Love OP.'

sashh · 21/10/2024 02:23

I am so invested in this.

BTW re cats and lights, they can learn. They learn most easily with a touch on/off light and a deaf hoomin slave.

JT12 · 21/10/2024 04:06

Take photos of the rooms on your camera before leaving in the morning and check when you come home. If you just snap a quick photo as you leave the rooms you will know if anything is different. It is actually easy to think you have done something or left something in a different place than you have - i do it all the time and insist someone has moved something but I know no-one is breaking into the house and we dont have a ghost. Someone else does it and forgets or else I do. If you are genuinely worried either cameras to a quick iPhone photo will put your mind at rest or confirm one way or another.

Gosh in all this time I never thought about asking her...

Of course I've asked her. And she said no, just like I expected!

i think the so called blood came from the taps

Mumto42005 · 21/10/2024 00:42

@Cherrysoup No but he was very mentally abusive. One night, I was waiting for the police to come and see me as he wouldn’t leave me alone or stop calling / texting me, and he had the audacity to text ‘How did you get on?’ - later I discovered he was in the loft when he text this!

Thankfully me and the children have now relocated so we are safe from him as he doesn’t know where we are x

Dear Lord, you poor people! He sounds unhinged!

Why don’t you start voyages on Fridays? Is this why the Titanic sank?

NewGreenDuck · 21/10/2024 07:36

Fridays are unlucky because of Jesus being crucified on a Friday. Redheads are unlucky on board ship ( probably because Judas was believed to be a redhead), whistling was unlucky as it was believed that whistling would blow up a storm. Those who set sail in ships were very superstitious. As was my mum!

I had a similar experience a couple of years ago with my car.

I was convinced someone was accessing it, possibly even sleeping in it as stuff was being moved around inside the car. The glove box was opened, charging cables and a raincoat moved, a school bag that was on the floor had been moved onto the seat and emptied out. It turned out to be rats. It was all pretty big stuff and it seemed inconceivable. We hadn't seen any droppings or smelt rats, but when the car broke down and they took it apart it was no doubting it was rats.
Pretty sure rats can't turn lights on or get milk out of the fridge though!

Was none of the stuff chewed though?

zizza · 21/10/2024 07:40

Unfortunately, given all the other circumstances you've described (showing that it can't be someone else accessing your home so would do this) the only explanation is that it's one of you doing these things and then forgetting. Hopefully, having more cameras around the place will show what's going on in future. Good luck

i hope you’re ok OP.

Really hope you get some answers. And that your post remains. MN removes all the interesting threads that I get invested in!

Have the police come out yet?

Goneistheday · 21/10/2024 08:24

The flecks on the toilet cistern look like the aftermath of a spider eating a fly to me. We get this, especially at this time of year when the spiders come into our house.

oakleaffy · 21/10/2024 08:39

@horseHorseHorse I still can't see that the blood would be flea dirt {how gross that people allow their pets to get so flea ridden that they drop flea dirt and flea eggs everywhere..there are effective prophylactic treatments out there.

Like you I am massively allergic to flea bites so like you treat monthly with the tablets- Someone's poodle when I visited them even for an afternoon caused a massive allergic reaction to it's fleas-

If that was flea dirt, and you were allergic, you'd know.

Looks much more like spider poop.

SurelySmartie · 21/10/2024 08:58

So the household is you, husband, 3 cats,1 dog.
Sister visits daily.

Does she ever bring anyone with her?
Why have MN deleted some posts?
Could someone have sneezed the blood?

we are getting towards Halloween.

Who said that?

The OP is desperate for a reassuring explanation, but has ignored screeds of reassuring explanations. Several people have pointed out cat hair on the freshly cleaned cistern, but (for whatever odd reason) the OP is continuing to insist it can't have been her cat(s).

Sothatsalrighthen · 21/10/2024 09:16

Have security problems, security cameras are easily hacked, get a private VPN first.

ThePoshUns · 21/10/2024 09:18

Agree @SassK lots of people have put forward some reasonable explanations but OP seems to be ignoring those and would rather believe that someone is breaking into the house to take milk out of the fridge and love her husband's glasses

SurelySmartie · 21/10/2024 09:28

I googled- flea flecks on cistern- and clicked images ... and see several pics like you've got, all talking about cat fleas.

Oh yes so it does. It does look like flea poop.

That does not, however, explain your misplaced items...

I guess most of us have left stuff out now and again and forgotten. I left the bathroom light on all night the other day and that’s not like me but as pp said easier to do with the evenings getting darker.
