Those protestors actually make me feel even less bothered by climate change. I genuinely don't give a shit anymore.

Have they managed to convince anyone?

I try tune out when I hear about it now cause I think they are toasters

ArrowOfAthena · 28/09/2024 16:23

Nope, bunch of over privileged arseholes

Hahahah tossers

Peonies12 · 28/09/2024 16:24

I hope you haven’t reproduced. Do you not care about the future of the planet?

Clearinguptheclutter · 28/09/2024 16:24

I didn’t need them to convince me

I broadly support them, but not always their specific actions

Peaceful protest gets you nowhere. How else can get they get proper attention?

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles 😂😂yes

I have 'reproduced' 😂
And no, still don't care.

Generations down the line will either figure it out, or not.

Nah, that bunch of tossers make me want to crank the heating up!

CombatLingerie · 28/09/2024 16:28

In answer to your question OP. No I don’t think Just Stop Oil have ever convinced anyone to care more about climate change. Hopefully they will be joining their recently sentenced friends (who did the same thing) in prison shortly.

Ivyn · 28/09/2024 16:29

I don't care about those protesters at all, but as an environmental scientist I am very concerned about climate change and all the hundreds of potential consequences, some of which we are already seeing and having to deal with.

Doesn’t bother you at all then that your children and grandchildren could become climate refugees, or best case scenario live in a world which is full of them.
if this generation doesn’t work it out, there isn’t a future as the effects will be too severe to reverse. We may have passed that point already

savannahowl · 28/09/2024 16:31

Don't be ridiculous

I’ll admit I don’t really understand those who are so opposed to their methods. Protests aren’t meant to be neat or convenient. Surely their long-term goals are more important than the material things they ruin on the way?

MiriamMay · 28/09/2024 16:32

I care about the climate.
However, JSO are turning people against the cause. Their actions have achieve absolutely nothing apart from making people less inclined to engage with the issue of climate change.

They're ruining stuff that has actual human value.

Why don't they blow up a polyester factory or something actually damaging to the environment?

They're so annoying.

Yes this pretty much where I am. They are not wrong about the seriousness of the threat and the weakness of the political response.

I don’t know if you meant that literally or not, (I struggle to read sarcasm online), but if you did, blowing up a plastic factory would cause further environmental issues (sorry if that was obvious.)

What have they ruined that has actual human value?

I think you're right.

And the attitude of the OP of this thread demonstrates that what we actually need is to educate people on the facts.

Such as showing people the Keeling Curve and explaining what it is telling us. Explaining the consequences of warmer and more acidic oceans, explaining the consequences of warmer, wetter meteorological conditions on weather patterns, and then the impacts of weather patterns on crops, fresh water, etc. I could go on!

gannett · 28/09/2024 16:35

I don't understand why Just Stop Oil's specific tactics would sway you either way on taking the climate crisis seriously. The science is still the science regardless of whether they pull stunts or not. Deciding you don't believe in it based on headline-grabbing stunts rather than actually reading and researching the facts seems rather stupid.

Heating the annoying twats causing chaos <> not carrying about the environment

Hth

Edit. In case it's not clear, it is possible to hate them AND still care about the environment

Which is why their tactics are so unbelievably misplaced that they are turning people away from the issue and not drawing them in.

And as for not caring, until there is a global strategy from all governments rather than pushing the issue onto the general public it’s going to have little impact.

Given how even a global pandemic didn’t provoke united cooperation I don’t hold out much hope.

I’ll keep doing the ‘right thing’ but the like of JSO don’t help.

I don't think they're turning people against the cause, I think those who are opposed to tackling climate change are pretending it's because of JSO.

'I used care about the environment but now want to burn more fossil fuels because I'm upset about JSO' is too stupid to be true. I just don't believe many people are that stupid.
