Those protestors actually make me feel even less bothered by climate change. I genuinely don't give a shit anymore.

Have they managed to convince anyone?

I don't need them to convince me, I do think they are wasting their time though. I feel any dent in omissions now is just too little too late. We need to be putting massive effort into how we live with what's coming, not trying to stop the inevitable.

Tbh I was pretty shocked at the lengthy sentences for chucking some paint over a painting, in comparison to all the men who share films of children being raped and just get a slap on the wrist.

gannett · 28/09/2024 17:01

WeirdyWorldy · 28/09/2024 16:58

The same! They genuinely annoy the fuck out me and that Greta girl.

They're doing more harm than good. Just pissing people off.

Please don't presume you speak for all "people". They inspire a lot of people too, especially Greta Thunberg, who's a goddamn heroine of our times.

You can't please everyone and selfish idiots who only think in terms of their own inconvenience aren't worth the effort.

You’re right, they are not the cause of disengagement but no single entity is the cause. However, I would argue they are part of the current disengagement.

I think it is totally unreasonable to blame them. The same is/was always said about protestors - it was said about anti-slavery, anti-apartheid, women's suffrage.

It is a known tactic of those who favour the status quo.

Indeed.

Also is anyone in jail for the Grenfell disaster yet? Hmm no.

ChocolateLemons · 28/09/2024 17:03

Our children and grandchildren's generation will appreciate their attempts (and many already do!) and will wonder why their futures matter so little to you.
I'm wondering if now.
Tell me why you don't care if they don't 'figure it out'? Genuinely keen to understand. Would something change your mind - what do you think just stop oil do should do?

Happyinarcon · 28/09/2024 17:04

The government won’t tackle climate change and the protestors conveniently don’t harass politicians.

notnorman · 28/09/2024 17:05

Peonies12 · 28/09/2024 16:24

I hope you haven’t reproduced. Do you not care about the future of the planet?

Have you seen how big the planet is - and how insignificant the UK is?

IsleOfPenguinBollards · 28/09/2024 17:11

I do find it worrying to see the government cracking down on non-violent protests. The judge said the painting ‘could’ have been damaged. However, the protesters didn’t intend to damage it (it was behind glass) and it wasn’t damaged.

It’s nice to know that there are still plenty of spaces left within our prisons. Not enough for every sex offender, you understand, but enough for every environmental protester.

They were already on suspended sentences for previous acts and were openly planning more disruption. At least one of them had 13 previous convictions inc. flying drones at Heathrow (!).

In court, they were total dickheads, constantly disrupting the proceedings. The police had to be called to remove them from the stand at various points. That's why they went to jail. Nothing was deterring them. It was entirely self-inflicted.

Not this again. We outsource our manufacturing to China and India, then blame them for climate change. How convenient!

DoTheDinosaurStomp · 28/09/2024 17:19

StolenChanel · 28/09/2024 16:31

I’ll admit I don’t really understand those who are so opposed to their methods. Protests aren’t meant to be neat or convenient. Surely their long-term goals are more important than the material things they ruin on the way?

Would you say that you weren't opposed to their methods if their methods stopped you from getting an ambulance to your child in a timely manner? Or stopped you from getting to a hospital to say your last goodbyes to someone?

Heating the annoying twats causing chaos <> not carrying about the environment

Hth

Edit. In case it's not clear, it is possible to hate them AND still care about the environment

Edited

The OP has said that she doesn't care about climate change.

schloss · 28/09/2024 17:23

@savannahowl I agree with you.

savannahowl · 28/09/2024 17:27

Correct I do not

longtompot · 28/09/2024 17:29

They're ruining stuff that has actual human value

I think the Earth is far more valuable than some pictures someone long dead has painted, and I love these paintings too. It's not just humans who are relying on the earth to continue.
I think it's very short sighted to say that generations down the line will either figure it out, or not. What if they realise that things should have been done now and by then it's too late?
I do think that we need to find a different way to generate energy and stop the reliance on fossil fuels which need to be gradually phased out.

But as far as I know they haven't damaged any paintings, they have just done things they know will attract attention and get in the news. Just getting free advertising really.

Tinydogssitter · 28/09/2024 17:29

savannahowl · 28/09/2024 16:27

I have 'reproduced' 😂
And no, still don't care.

Generations down the line will either figure it out, or not.

What an awful position to take! Just leave to your children or grandchildren to sort out - classic.

ruffler45 · 28/09/2024 17:30

If JSO first went to China et al and persuaded them to stop burning coal in all their power stations that produce the energy to make the goods that we then buy, then i might start listening to them

LifeExperience · 28/09/2024 17:31

I'll believe climate change is as bad as the media tells us when our elites stop flying around in private planes and building waterfront vacation homes. Until then, it's all hype imo.

TorroFerney · 28/09/2024 17:32

bergamotorange · 28/09/2024 16:45

Someone on another thread suggested it was a point about how much is spent (money and effort) protecting the past while the future is at such risk.

Ah ok, thank you.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/09/2024 17:33

What beats me is why supporters bleat "Well, what else can they do when peaceful protest doesn't work?", as if that's someone else's problem to sort out

It seems they fail to realise that people can't be forced to care about their chosen cause, though most of us are happy to do our bit where we can.
The vastly funded climate industry has been trying to scare us to death for years, so by now folk will either care or they won't and enraging them is hardly going to improve anything

It seems to make a fun day out for these idiots though, so I guess that's something Hmm

Tinydogssitter · 28/09/2024 17:29

It takes some arrogance and grandiosity to think that 'we' the current inhabitants of the earth have all the answers to lifes queries, woes, problems and have to find solutions to everything that is wrong (disclaimer, I think think that climate change will continue to evolve as it has done for millions of years so its not 'wrong' as such)

You (and all us other humans on earth right now) are not the sole holder of anything or the arbitrator of what to do about anything.

Humans are animals, we're born, we reproduce (some of us) and we die. Thats it.

thepariscrimefiles · 28/09/2024 17:33

I understand that many people will be turned off by the tactics of Just Stop Oil.

However, anyone who says they don't care about climate change when the impact becomes more obvious each year is deluded.
