In the fridge or not in the fridge?

Here is a list of things about which OH and disagree as to whether they should be kept in the fridge. Ours is an Anglo-American relationship, but I don't think all these differences of opinion are down to that....

Eggs
Ketchup and HP
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit
Onions
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon
Opened jam and marmalade
Tomatoes
Butter in winter
Pickles and capers in jars
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes

*Possible red herring, as we never have white wine that we're not planning to drink soon,

With the condiments, are you talking about when they've been opened or before?

Hayley1256 · 26/09/2024 18:46

Eggs - not in the fridge
Ketchup and HP - put in fridge after opening
Mayo - not fresh made - as above
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - in the fridge as they taste better
Onions - not in the fridge
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - only in the fridge if your planning to drink
Opened jam and marmalade - in the fridge
Tomatoes - in the fridge
Butter in winter - not in the fridge
Pickles and capers in jars - put in fridge after opening
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - as above

DappledThings · 26/09/2024 18:46

All of it in the fridge.

I know eggs don't need to but our fridge has an egg holder shelf and it saves having to find anywhere else for them

Kangarude · 26/09/2024 18:46

Mayo, jam and marmalade once opened. Wine always in the fridge - cooled ready for emergencies Grin
None of the others go in our fridge

BananaFrogDooby · 26/09/2024 18:47

I'd store all those in the fridge unless I didn't have space (I sometime move condiments out at Christmas time) or was planning to eat it quickly (I do prefer my jam not fridge cold, but only if we're going to get through it in a couple of weeks).
I don't refrigerate fruit apart from grapes and berries

smallchange · 26/09/2024 18:48

I would put opened tomato puree in a tube in the fridge if I wasn't using the whole thing within a few days as otherwise it goes mouldy.

I also keep butter in the fridge for convenience because I mainly use it for cooking rather than spreading, but do think a butter dish is better.

Everything else on your list goes in the cupboard. Dh is forever putting the mayonaise in the fridge though.

DreamyJadeGoose · 26/09/2024 18:49

All in the fridge except the wine (if not drinking soon), butter (unless the current butter dish one) and onions. Assuming the bottles and jars are opened/unsealed.

HaroldMeaker · 26/09/2024 18:49

About eggs, Mary Berry says if you get through the box quickly there's no need to fridge them but if you're a one boiled egg a week type person you should probably fridge them.

The others never go in the fridge, (except butter in the height of summer).

But our kitchen stays fairly cool most of the time.
