In the fridge or not in the fridge?

Here is a list of things about which OH and disagree as to whether they should be kept in the fridge. Ours is an Anglo-American relationship, but I don't think all these differences of opinion are down to that....

Eggs
Ketchup and HP
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit
Onions
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon
Opened jam and marmalade
Tomatoes
Butter in winter
Pickles and capers in jars
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes

*Possible red herring, as we never have white wine that we're not planning to drink soon,

No fridge for onions and tomato puree.

Everything else goes in fridge.

Condiments and jarred stuff (pickles etc) on fridge once open.

Butter always in fridge. I don't like butter dishes 😒

Don't drink anymore and only ever used to drink red wine but for guests it would go in the fridge night before or as long as possible before guests arrive.

The onions would be in the pantry, along with unopened easy garlic and tomato paste - to be shifted over to the fridge with everything else on your list once they'd been opened.

Sometimes I side eye the eggs and think that they should be stored at room temperature but there's just more space in the fridge.

Thursa · 26/09/2024 20:19

Ketchup and HP…fridge after opening

Eggs not in the fridge!! I make a lot of bread and the eggs have to be room temp.

I'd put everything else in the fridge, assuming you mean opened condiments. Wine - as I buy a case at a time I store that in the bottle rack and put one bottle in the fridge ready for opening.

My MIL swears tomatoes are better out of the fridge but I prefer them cold.

Pass the smelling salts: you put eggs in your bread?
Real bread is made with flour, yeast (or sourdough starter), water and salt (and half a teaspoon of sugar if you need to feed the yeast). Nothing else!
Adding eggs to the mix makes brioche.

Divebar2021 · 26/09/2024 20:29

Eggs definitely not in the fridge - if you’re baking you need them to be room temperature. The fact fridges have holders doesn’t mean they need to go in there in the UK

Butter only goes in the fridge here if it’s hot
Condiments - jams etc yes in the fridge. Partly for space reasons and partly because modern jams seem to go mouldy quite quickly now

Onions - no. Live with the potatoes

Grapes - no. Live with the other fruit

NewSchoolYearRevamp · 26/09/2024 20:29

If you don’t like things cold you can get them out for a bit before you eat/use them but they last longer in the fridge.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/09/2024 20:30

Everything in fridge except eggs

That made me laugh 😂 yes I put 1 egg in my bread mix! It's an American recipe so it is probably sweeter than standard but it's definitely not brioche. It's incredibly popular and always works - so I don't mess with the recipe 😁.

I agree with this list apart from eggs and butter - not in fridge.

same - but tomatoes do not go in the fridge either.

LouH5 · 26/09/2024 20:33

The thought of a cold grape straight from the fridge sets my teeth on edge!
Also don’t put eggs in, but aside from those two, I’d put all the others in.

Curious about the butter in winter, does it just stay on the counter top or something instead of the fridge?

ArthnoldManacatsaman · 26/09/2024 20:34

VerityBlueSky · 26/09/2024 19:01

I agree with most peoples lists except for I have never ever put jam or ketchup in the fridge.

I knew people put ketchup in the fridge sometimes but I'm mildly shocked by the jam and how many people say fridge for that. I've never even considered it.

I keep open jam in the fridge because when I tried keeping it on a shelf to save fridge space, it went mouldy. Maybe I was taking too long to eat it though as it was just me at that point

NotSmallButFunSize · 26/09/2024 20:36

Has the word "fridge" lost all meaning to anyone else now they have read it so many times?! 😂

Edenmum2 · 26/09/2024 20:37

Fridge kills all flavour in tomatoes almost instantly

Divebar2021 · 26/09/2024 20:38

I should clarify that all salted and unsalted butter lives in the fridge. It’s only the butter I use for toast etc that lives in a butter dish on the side once in use. I have an older house so it doesn’t need to go in the fridge apart from particularly hot days ( and real butter is a pain straight out the fridge)

meganorks · 26/09/2024 20:43

Where I keep them:

Eggs - fridge (but you don't have to)
Ketchup and HP - not fridge
Mayo - fridge
Grapes - fridge but bigger fruit not fridge
Onions - not fridge
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - fridge if room, not if not
Opened jam and marmalade - fridge
Tomatoes - not fridge (husband says you aren't supposed to otherwise i probably would)
Butter in winter - not fridge
Pickles and capers in jars - bin!
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - not used easy garlic but I don't keep tomato puree in fridge

muffledvoice · 26/09/2024 20:46

I put all of them in fridge except for eggs or unopened sauces

housethatbuiltme · 26/09/2024 20:49

Egg is a straight forward scientific one.

British eggs bench & American eggs fridge.

British eggs (The Lion Standard) are vaccinated and thus are NOT membrane stripped, the membrane protects them at room temperature. However as they are not stripped dried fecal particle can be present in the membrane pores, which when mixed with condensation (as occurs in a fridge) introduces a moist breeding ground and small contaminant risk when cracking.

American eggs are not vaccinate so are stripped of their membrane in a washing process however this is removing the protective layer that would keep the egg fresh and increase the risk of spoiling or new bacteria entering the egg through the now non protected pores. To increase shelf life and decrease bacteria they should be stored in a fridge.

housethatbuiltme · 26/09/2024 20:53

I'm personally a butter on the bench person, it drives people mad. Butter was invented, common and long lasting long before fridges even existed so its fine to live on the bench.

Things designed as preserves where suppose to last and not need to be kept or consumed 'fresh'.

Button28384738 · 26/09/2024 21:00

Eggs - fridge
Ketchup and HP - fridge but don't have strong feelings about it!
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans - fridge because of the egg
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - mostly fridge but bananas and anything that needs ripening out of fridge
Onions - counter
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - only in fridge a few hours before drinking
Opened jam and marmalade - fridge
Tomatoes - counter
Butter in winter - counter
Pickles and capers in jars - either
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - fridge once opened

Wonderwall23 · 26/09/2024 21:02

Eggs I keep in fridge for convenience but I know that this is 'wrong'. I don't bake anyway though.

Butter I keep on the counter, which I feel is also 'wrong' but do it so its spreadable.

Everything else in fridge for me...apart from onions. It would never have occurred to me to put an onion in the fridge. I thought they were supposed to live in the dark with the potatoes (although it's only just occurred to me that the fridge light is only on when the door is open!)

ChangeItAgainSam · 26/09/2024 21:06

Eggs - not in fridge
Ketchup and HP- fridge once opened
Mayo - fridge ice opened
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit- nicer in fridge and stay fresher
Onions - I keep in fridge drawer
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - fridge- best to be prepared... tough never know when emergency wine is required!!
Opened jam and marmalade - fridge, label even tells you
Tomatoes - definitely not in fridge, however then I eat them all in one go like a bowl of sweets
Butter in winter - butter dish not in fridge
Pickles and capers in jars - usually in fridge
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - fridge

MrsPostmanPat · 26/09/2024 21:23

The only thing on your list we don't keep in the fridge is eggs.

If we have white wine, we're planning on drinking it soon! Grin

We disagree massively on only one thing where to refrigerate or not is concerned: chocolate! I put mine in the fridge, he puts his in the cupboard!
