In the fridge or not in the fridge?

Here is a list of things about which OH and disagree as to whether they should be kept in the fridge. Ours is an Anglo-American relationship, but I don't think all these differences of opinion are down to that....

Eggs
Ketchup and HP
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit
Onions
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon
Opened jam and marmalade
Tomatoes
Butter in winter
Pickles and capers in jars
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes

*Possible red herring, as we never have white wine that we're not planning to drink soon,

All of that in the fridge. A small bit of butter kept out day-to-day, for a day or two max

Can’t believe all you heathens keeping tomatoes in the fridge!

Cold, hard. tasteless balls of red nastiness 🤢 vs Soft, juicy, sweet heaven.

I don't like tomatoes and neither does dp. We just buy them for my youngest, who only likes them 'crunchy'. Left out they go soft and then he won't eat them

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/09/2024 18:48

I agree with this list apart from eggs and butter - not in fridge.

Agreed! Everything except eggs and butter.

Edited to add, onions are a root vegetable and don’t need fridge either.

I store tomatoes out the fridge in summer but for most of the year, they're tasteless and I only really use them in cooking so they go in the fridge then.

teksab · 26/09/2024 18:59

pigsDOfly · 26/09/2024 19:00

Onions and tomatoes shouldn't be in the fridge as refrigeration ruins the flavour.

Eggs preferably not refrigerated but can be kept in the fridge as long as they are allowed to get to room temperature for several hours prior to cooking.

Jam, marmalade, butter, HP, Ketchup and Mayo do not need to be in the fridge, even after opening as long as you don't intend to keep them for several months.

All other things on the list, in the fridge after opening.

VerityBlueSky · 26/09/2024 19:01

I agree with most peoples lists except for I have never ever put jam or ketchup in the fridge.

I knew people put ketchup in the fridge sometimes but I'm mildly shocked by the jam and how many people say fridge for that. I've never even considered it.

ThinkingUpsideDown · 26/09/2024 19:01

Eggs - not in fridge
Ketchup and HP - in fridge once opened
Mayo - not fresh made. - in fridge once opened
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - depends on how ripe they are, what the fruit is etc. grapes and berries are in the fridge in our house.
Onions - cupboard
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - in fridge for emergency
Opened jam and marmalade - fridge
Tomatoes - depends how quickly you are going to eat them! I usually keep mine in fridge for longevity but taste so much at room temp.
Butter in winter - out of fridge.
Pickles and capers in jars - fridge
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - fridge once opened

nonevernotever · 26/09/2024 19:02

American eggs in the fridge. British ones not. Iirc American eggs are washed which destroys the protective coating on the shell. British flocks are vaccinated against salmonella rather than the eggs being washed so are fine out of the fridge.

chesterlestreet · 26/09/2024 19:02

I am sure eggs in Uk should be stored outside the fridge but guidance in the US is to put them in the fridge because they have been washed/treated which affects their life

gingercat02 · 26/09/2024 19:04

Eggs - yes but you shouldn't/don't need to
Ketchup and HP z no
Mayo - not fresh made PseudoHellmans - yes
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - no
Onions - no
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - no
Opened jam and marmalade - yes but no need
Tomatoes - yes
Butter in winter - no
Pickles and capers in jars- yes but no need
Easy garlic don't buy and tomato puree in tubes - yes

Some of it is lack of cupboard space. I like pickles and mayo cold.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 26/09/2024 19:05

Eggs - yes.

Not onions
Not tomatoes
Yes to everything else

pigsDOfly · 26/09/2024 19:12

Amendment to my original list: Mayo should probably be in the fridge.

stayathomer · 26/09/2024 19:15

Apparently you take the flavour out of tomatoes by putting them in the fridge! Onions I always kept out, there’s mixed things on the eggs as they’re not refrigerated in the supermarket but have heard many say you’re keeping food poisoning causing microorganisms at bay by keeping them in the fridge

Pizzaaah · 26/09/2024 19:16

Eggs - counter
Ketchup and HP - pantry
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans - fridge
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - fridge
Onions - freezer
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - fridge and rack (back up needed)
Opened jam and marmalade - pantry
Tomatoes - fridge
Butter in winter- pantry all year round
Pickles and capers in jars - fridge once opened
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - fridge once opened

pantry is not as cold as fridge, but not as warm as kitchen. HTH 🤪

Saschka · 26/09/2024 19:21

All in the fridge except the wine (assuming the jams and condiments are open).

I’m aware eggs and butter don’t need to be in the fridge, but it’s the easiest place to keep them.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/09/2024 19:27

I only put cherry tomatoes in the fridge. Larger ones stay out to protect the texture.

Alicana · 26/09/2024 19:30

Eggs, onions, tomatoes, and butter out of the fridge. Everything else in the fridge.

I am assuming the jars are open.

White wine should always be in the fridge, ideally a dedicated wine fridge!!

booisbooming · 26/09/2024 19:30

Fanny Craddock said she'd sooner put a baby in the fridge than an egg! I agree

NOT FRIDGE
Eggs - fridge makes fresh eggs less fresh, keeps them in a sort of indefinite state of half-freshness, weird imho
Ketchup and HP - unless you particularly want it cold
Onions - won't caramelise as well if they've been in fridge
Butter in winter - current on the go pack out, back-up in fridge
Pickles and capers in jars - why would these go in the fridge?
Opened jam and marmalade - unless very slow jam-eater (3+ months)

FRIDGE
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - personal preference but I like cold grapes
Tomatoes - OK but bring to room temp before eating
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - why not be ready though?
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - force of habit
PLUS Face masks
