In the fridge or not in the fridge?

Here is a list of things about which OH and disagree as to whether they should be kept in the fridge. Ours is an Anglo-American relationship, but I don't think all these differences of opinion are down to that....

Eggs
Ketchup and HP
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit
Onions
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon
Opened jam and marmalade
Tomatoes
Butter in winter
Pickles and capers in jars
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes

*Possible red herring, as we never have white wine that we're not planning to drink soon,

NRTFT, but I think we have pretty much all those things in the fridge!

Except the onions. But spring onions do go in the salad drawer!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/09/2024 21:36

Tomatoes taste better out of the fridge, ditto grapes.

Anything like mayo goes in the fridge once opened.
Jam and marmalade, never.
Eggs don’t need to go in the fridge unless you hardly ever use them, but it seems a shame not to use those little eggy spaces made specially for them.

Tomato purée once opened, fridge.

Onions never go in the fridge here, unless I’ve used only half a big one.

Mind you when I lived in a hot climate, with no AC in the kitchen, just about everything had to go in the fridge - inc. bread, potatoes and onions - or they wouldn’t last 5 minutes.

Great thread. My DP puts veg in the cupboard top left above hob. So sprouts. Purple sprouting broccoli, peppers etc al. Drives me fucking nuts. I say they go in the fridge no? Please someone settle this once and for all

Butter - rarely in the fridge, unless boiling hot day. It’s unspreadable f you keep it in fridge.

Yes, in fridge. Veg goes bad in a cupboard.

Thank you. He even puts bloody shrooms in the cupboard. Drives me mad. I'm gonna read your reply to him

lovemycbf · 27/09/2024 16:37

I'd keep all of the things you mentioned in the fridge

saraclara · 27/09/2024 16:42

All in the fridge. I know that eggs and fruit don't need to be in there, but as I live alone, I don't get through things quickly, and most things last longer if they're kept in the fridge.

Things like tomato ketchup used to live in the cupboard, but since the use of preservatives has been limited (which is a good thing) even ketchup was going mouldy before I was half way down the bottle.

saraclara · 27/09/2024 16:45

Oh, hang on. Not everything. I don't keep onions in the fridge (unless they're spring onions)

saraclara · 27/09/2024 16:45

Double posted

Greengagesnfennel · 28/09/2024 00:05

Eggs, onions and tomatoes in fridge?!! Nooo! Never.

butter - only reserves in fridge in winter. Butter dish of in-use butter, not in fridge.

WhereYouLeftIt · 28/09/2024 00:14

Assuming the stuff in jars has been opened, I'd keep it in the fridge. Unopened, it'd been in the pantry. So that's -
Ketchup and HP
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans
Opened jam and marmalade
Pickles and capers in jars
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes

Also in the fridge:
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit
Onions
White wine, whenever I plan to drink it, it tastes foul warm
Butter in winter

Never in the fridge:
Eggs
Tomatoes (they have zero chance of spoiling in this house, I eat them like sweeties and they taste better at room temperature)
