In the fridge or not in the fridge?

Here is a list of things about which OH and disagree as to whether they should be kept in the fridge. Ours is an Anglo-American relationship, but I don't think all these differences of opinion are down to that....

Eggs
Ketchup and HP
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit
Onions
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon
Opened jam and marmalade
Tomatoes
Butter in winter
Pickles and capers in jars
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes

*Possible red herring, as we never have white wine that we're not planning to drink soon,

Tomatoes in the fruit bowl
Eggs in a wire chicken on the counter
Salted butter in a butter dish, unsalted in fridge
White wine in garage until Friday morning

Everything else on your list in fridge

What time do you tend to start drinking on a Friday morning?

TeatimeForTheSoul · 26/09/2024 19:55

You only store cold things which would go off quickly or grow mould.
Preserves are called that for a reason. Jams are such high sugar to PRESERVE the fruit and stop it going off.
I bet you even put decent cheese in the fridge eye roll Do that in a traditional French house and you’ll get an appropriate response.

TwistedSisters · 26/09/2024 19:55

Eggs not in the fridge!! I make a lot of bread and the eggs have to be room temp.

I'd put everything else in the fridge, assuming you mean opened condiments. Wine - as I buy a case at a time I store that in the bottle rack and put one bottle in the fridge ready for opening.

My MIL swears tomatoes are better out of the fridge but I prefer them cold.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 26/09/2024 19:56

In our house:

Eggs - fridge
Ketchup and HP - cupboard
Mayo - not fresh made. - fridge
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - fridge
Onions - cupboard
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - cupboard
Opened jam and marmalade - fridge
Tomatoes - fridge
Butter in winter - butter dish on side (fridge in hot weather)
Pickles and capers in jars - fridge
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - fridge.

WhereAreAllTheOddSocks · 26/09/2024 19:57

Yes to all.

JennySayQuoi · 26/09/2024 19:57

Hayley1256 · 26/09/2024 18:46

Eggs - not in the fridge
Ketchup and HP - put in fridge after opening
Mayo - not fresh made - as above
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - in the fridge as they taste better
Onions - not in the fridge
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - only in the fridge if your planning to drink
Opened jam and marmalade - in the fridge
Tomatoes - in the fridge
Butter in winter - not in the fridge
Pickles and capers in jars - put in fridge after opening
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - as above

All of this. Except if you put onions in the fridge, they don’t make your eyes water when chopping. This has been a game-changer for someone (me!) who used to wear a full-face motorbike helmet when chopping onions!

luckylavender · 26/09/2024 19:58

Everything in fridge except ketchup, brown sauce & jam & mayo

Teddleshon · 26/09/2024 19:59

Tomatoes should never be refrigerated and eggs should always be room temperature for cooking.

TwistedSisters · 26/09/2024 19:59

CranfordScones · 26/09/2024 19:33

None of it in the fridge!

I live very happily without a fridge or freezer. It's a relatively modern innovation. I haven't died yet.

You don't have a fridge??

Hayley1256 · 26/09/2024 19:59

Just to clarify, I do keep tomatoes in the fridge but I take them out a few hours before I plan to have them. Sometimes I even add some olive and salt whilst they get to room temperature 😅

WappityWabbit · 26/09/2024 19:59

If you live in the UK, eggs don't need to go into a fridge as they're not at risk in the same way that battery eggs produced in the US are.

FreeSausages · 26/09/2024 20:00

Eggs, onions, tomatoes, butter = not in fridge

Tomatoes lose their flavour and onions don’t need to be stored in a fridge. The dairy products I can see why some still would but they’re wrong!

wordler · 26/09/2024 20:02

Eggs need to go in the fridge in the USA because they have been thoroughly washed before being sold refrigerated in supermarkets and the 'bloom' has been washed off which means the permeable shells can draw in bacteria.

Eggs in the UK are not processed in the same way so are safe to keep out of the fridge - as are eggs from your own chickens.

MissAustenTatious · 26/09/2024 20:07

Eggs : not in fridge but in a cool place
Ketchup and HP : not in the fridge when I was a kid, but these days it says o the bottle that it should be
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans: definitely in the fridge
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - definitely not in the fridge
Onions : why would you?
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon : white wine that you plan on drinking soon should be refrigerated, whether it's open or not! If you're just going to use it for cooking it's OK at room temperature but use a vaccum stopper:
Opened jam and marmalade : only apricot which has a tendancy to go off quicker than the others: jam is full of sugar so is OK at room temperature (especially if you have my husbnad eating it: he'll polish off a jar well before it can go nasty:
Tomatoes : flavour ruined by fridge storage
Butter in winter : fridge
Pickles and capers in jars : not in the fridge
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes : definitely in the fridge

ScottBakula · 26/09/2024 20:09

Jam doesn't mould quickly, it's the butter in the jam from the knife. If you use a jam spoon it will last much longer and just in the cupboard.

Jenala · 26/09/2024 20:10

Eggs - cupboard

Ketchup and HP - cupboard until opened, then fridge

Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans - as above cupboard until opened, then fridge

Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - grapes, apples, berries in the fridge, bananas and oranges in the fruit bowl. Grapes could be the fruit bowl we just don't.

Onions - dark cupboard. Ours are in a hessian drawstring onion bag. Not to be stored with potatoes

*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - cupboard

Opened jam and marmalade - fridge

Tomatoes - fridge, though may remove an hour or before wanting for a salad

Butter in winter - always in a butter dish on the side, summer or winter

Pickles and capers in jars - cupboard until opened, then fridge

Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - cupboard until opened, then fridge

Lemonadeand · 26/09/2024 20:10

Also in an Anglo-American relationship and we also disagree about several of these! Tomatoes, grapes, berries, eggs especially. I think their houses are cooler than ours.

Temperatures make a big difference. I used to leave a lot more things out of the fridge in the UK Northwest than in the American South.

HollyKnight · 26/09/2024 20:13

All in the fridge. I find it's easier to prep when everything is in the same place.

Nannerli · 26/09/2024 20:13

Onions and tomatoes have no business being in the fridge. For butter, it depends whether I want it at room temperature for sandwiches (in which case it lives in a butter dish on the work surface) or kept cold for making pastry.

Ancient as in pre-electricity? 😂

I remember family members born before WW1 didn't see a tomato until they were adults - and they didn't eat them then, because they were rumoured to be poisonous (same family as deadly nightshade, I believe?) !

Rewis · 26/09/2024 20:15

I keep all of those in the fridge.
