In the fridge or not in the fridge?

Here is a list of things about which OH and disagree as to whether they should be kept in the fridge. Ours is an Anglo-American relationship, but I don't think all these differences of opinion are down to that....

Eggs
Ketchup and HP
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit
Onions
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon
Opened jam and marmalade
Tomatoes
Butter in winter
Pickles and capers in jars
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes

*Possible red herring, as we never have white wine that we're not planning to drink soon,

OP posts:

Only grapes white wine and tomatoes.

Melodysmum12 · 26/09/2024 19:33

Assuming it’s all opened I keep it all apart from eggs in fridge.
I like grapes crispy from the fridge.

tealandteal · 26/09/2024 19:33

Eggs - Out
Ketchup and HP - Out
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans - In once opened
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit- Grapes in, no other fruit though
Onions - Out when whole, in when cut
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - Out
Opened jam and marmalade - In
Tomatoes - In
Butter in winter - In
Pickles and capers in jars - In once opened
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - In once opened

CranfordScones · 26/09/2024 19:33

None of it in the fridge!

I live very happily without a fridge or freezer. It's a relatively modern innovation. I haven't died yet.

Eggs - not in the fridge
Ketchup and HP - put in fridge after opening
Mayo - not fresh made - as above
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - in the fridge as they taste better
Onions - not in the fridge
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - only in the fridge if your planning to drink
Opened jam and marmalade - in the fridge
Tomatoes - in the fridge
Butter in winter - not in the fridge
Pickles and capers in jars - put in fridge after opening
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - as above

tomatoes must never be in the fridge. If they are they become a piece of tasteless red fruit

LoobyDoop2 · 26/09/2024 19:38

Ketchup - yes
HP- no

Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit- don’t need to be, but I like them chilled
Onions- no, although if they’re cold they don’t make you cry as much
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon- no
Opened jam and marmalade- yes
Tomatoes- yes
Butter in winter- yes
Pickles and capers in jars- once opened, yes
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes- once opened, yes

Mumistiredzzzz · 26/09/2024 19:38

I keep everything in the fridge as I don't have much cupboard space. As a child eggs, ketchup, onions would live out. Pretty much everything else in fridge still.

zebranotzeebra · 26/09/2024 19:38

Once opened, all in the fridge except eggs and tomatoes. Tbh the eggs is only because my fridge is tiny, if I had room, they'd be refrigerated as well. Tomatoes taste miles better at room temperature however!

soupfiend · 26/09/2024 19:39

None of it in the fridge

Merryoldgoat · 26/09/2024 19:40

Eggs - not needed but easier to store there
Ketchup and HP - No
Mayo - not fresh made. PseudoHellmans - Yes
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit - No
Onions - no but easier to store there
*White wine you don't plan to drink soon - unheard of
Opened jam and marmalade - No
Tomatoes - Yes
Butter in winter - Yes when wrapped, otherwise in butter dish out on worktop (this is my all year round paradigm)
Pickles and capers in jars - yes - taste nicer cold and crunchy
Easy garlic and tomato puree in tubes - yes

Jc2001 · 26/09/2024 19:43

You don't have to keep eggs in the fridge but like most things they will last longer if you do.

stanleypops66 · 26/09/2024 19:45

I wouldn't put eggs, butter (gets to too hard) or the tube of garlic in the fridge. The rest I would

FrostyMorn · 26/09/2024 19:45

But...but...tomatoes taste of NOTHING if you put them in the fridge!

soupfiend · 26/09/2024 19:48

There are actually ancient bylaws in many towns and cities in the UK banning the storage of tomatoes in the fridge because its such a heinous thing to do.

Ancient as in pre-electricity? 😂

FullDisclosure · 26/09/2024 19:52

I wouldn't put eggs, tomatoes, preserves (jam, marmalade, pickles etc) or most fruit and veg in the fridge, or butter except in Summer. British eggs don't need to go in the fridge and you don't buy them from a refrigerated cabinet in the supermarket. I'd only buy proper preserves which are made fully with sugar, salt or vinegar. All this stuff cooks and tastes better without being in the fridge.

YessandNno · 26/09/2024 19:52

Assuming it's already been opened, this is what I do:
Eggs - fridge
Ketchup and HP - fridge
Mayo - not fresh made - fridge
Grapes etc - fridge
Onions - fridge
Tomatoes - fridge
Easy garlic/tomato puree in tubes - fridge
capers in jars - fridge
Shop-bought jam/marmalade - fridge

Homemade jam/marmalade - not fridge
Pickles in jars - not fridge
Butter in winter - not fridge

Assuming it's unopened:
White wine you don't plan to drink soon - not fridge.

Sourisblanche · 26/09/2024 19:52

Tomatoes in the fruit bowl
Eggs in a wire chicken on the counter
Salted butter in a butter dish, unsalted in fridge
White wine in garage until Friday morning

Everything else on your list in fridge

soupfiend · 26/09/2024 19:52

GuPuddingRamekinHoarder · 26/09/2024 19:50

Ancient as in pre-electricity? 😂

Created by soothsayers, around the 9th century I believe.

MaidOfSteel · 26/09/2024 19:53

In the US, eggs need to be refrigerated because of the way they're processed. Over here, we don't remove the natural protection from the shell, so we don't need to keep them in the fridge.

RachPelders · 26/09/2024 19:53

FRIDGE
Grapes and other casual pick-one-up fruit

FRIDGE ONLY WHEN OPENED

OUT OF FRIDGE

Onions
Butter
