Washing on lines in the rain.

Mokel · 22/09/2024 07:36

Even with 72 hours of yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms from my home, I can see three gardens and yards (Victorian terraces) with washing on their lines!

When they do take their washing in, they have to rewash it again as 1 it will stink and 2 probably dirty marks on the items where they rested on the line plus peg marks.

How stupid do you have to be not to remove washing from outside when it rains? If you are out for the day and its forecasted rain - you don't put it out.

Maybe you should get a hobby?

Nagatha · 22/09/2024 07:38

Maybe they don’t see the forecast.
maybe they had to go out unexpectedly.
Maybe they forgot they had washing out.
Maybe it doesn’t have any impact on your life whatsoever and you don’t need to waste so much time worrying about “stupid” people.

(edit for typo)

Setyoufree · 22/09/2024 07:38

There is a yellow warning basically every day these days it feels like.

Are they washing your clothes?! Hard to fathom why you'd care otherwise....

Pippa12 · 22/09/2024 07:39

I’ve had towels out for two days, I know they are there but I’ve met myself coming backwards for lots of reasons this weekend. I doubt my lovely neighbours have even noticed mind😂

Warmautumnbreeze · 22/09/2024 07:40

Yesterday my area had a weather warning for rain and thunder storms. It was a warm, sunny windy day. I waited for the rain until midday, after which I put washing on the line which dried pretty quickly.

This morning, same weather warnings for rain and it is actually raining.

I try my best to trust my instincts rather than weather forecasts, but yes if it was forecast to rain all day and I was going to be out for the full day I wouldn't risk it by putting washing on the line before I left.

StarSlinger · 22/09/2024 07:41

I did rush out and fetch mine in. I did hang it out in the morning despite the yellow warning. I have been guilty of leaving washing out in the rain though and I rarely re wash it when it eventually dries.

GoingUpUpUp · 22/09/2024 07:41

Blimey this is an intense OP just about washing on the line.

Perhaps they put it out when the weather was fine (like it was for me in the morning) and then it got caught by the rain so they figured they’d leave it and worry about it later.

This really is a case of ‘more important things going on to worry about’

MaybeImbad · 22/09/2024 07:41

Maybe they forgot / thought they’d risk it / stayed out longer than planned / anything really.

How nasty do you have to be to call folk stupid for something so insignificant?

HedgePigWig · 22/09/2024 07:42

When I had babies in washable nappies I used to hang them out in the rain on purpose! We had really hard water so rainwater would rinse all the mineral residue out and leave them super soft.

I don't really know why you care tbh.

Mosaic123 · 22/09/2024 07:42

Rain gets the creases out of washing!

Leaving it out makes it stink? I didn't experience this when I used to leave washing out - now I live in a flat.

MidnightPatrol · 22/09/2024 07:44

Calling them stupid is a bit harsh.

It happens!

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/09/2024 07:45

Why would it make it stink? That's nonsense.

AgileGreenSeal · 22/09/2024 07:45

What’s it got to do with you?

Gelasring · 22/09/2024 07:47

Get netflix. It's fat more interesting than looking at people's washing lines.

qwerty98 · 22/09/2024 07:48

My dad collapsed due to a brain haemorrhage a few months ago, one of the first things he said when he came around in the ambulance was “Can I hear rain? Debbie (my mum), sorry love, I know it’s my job but you might have to get the washing in before we go.” 😂

I’ve found that on the odd occasion I’ve left clothes out in the rain they don’t smell damp once they’ve been dried. It’s leaving them in the washing machine that’s the killer.

muddyford · 22/09/2024 07:49

Our rain comes straight off the Atlantic and it certainly doesn't make my washing smell nor does it leave dirty marks!

Completelyjo · 22/09/2024 07:49

Alternatively how stupid do you have to be to have such a narrow view of things?

Get a hobby instead of curtain twitching.

luckylavender · 22/09/2024 07:50

I left mine out in the downpour yesterday morning - hadn't checked the forecast since Friday when no rain was forecast. It got soaking and by 5pm it was all dry. Get a hobby.

Seas164 · 22/09/2024 07:50

I can't imagine having the time or inclination to be so invested in my neighbours laundry patterns, but if I hadn't looked at the weather forecast yesterday I'd have got loads of laundry dried on the line. I often put washing on the line and go out, at which point it rains. I'm busy. We live in a rainy country.

I'm not sure this qualifies as stupid. And since when did rain stink?

sunsetsandboardwalks · 22/09/2024 07:51

Imagine getting this worked up about how a total stranger decides to dry their clothes 🙄

Neinneinnein · 22/09/2024 07:52

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 22/09/2024 07:36

Maybe you should get a hobby?

To the point, I like it.
Other people's washing isn't our business (unless they never normally do this, you've also not seen them for a while, their car hasn't moved, other normal activity seems to have stopped...and you've got welfare concerns).

Henowner · 22/09/2024 07:53

Got some out there right now. No point bringing it in when it's dripping wet 😉

PepeLePew · 22/09/2024 07:53

My washing is currently on the line because I didn't check the forecast and left it out overnight (I know! Imagine!). And now it's soaking and I can't be bothered to go out in the rain to get it. I expect I will later, but probably not. It won't stink or have marks on it and if it did I would rewash it. It really really doesn't matter.

Gettoachiro · 22/09/2024 07:54

If it's not raining before I go to work in the morning I will put my washing out. If it rains it rains and I stick them in the dryer when I get back. They don't smell at all. If it hasn't rained then winner winner.

How dirty is your line/pegs if they are leaving marks?

LittleBitAlexisLaLaLaLaLa · 22/09/2024 07:55

I voted YABU because you care way too much about what other people are doing with their washing.
