Washing on lines in the rain.

Mokel · 22/09/2024 07:36

Even with 72 hours of yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms from my home, I can see three gardens and yards (Victorian terraces) with washing on their lines!

When they do take their washing in, they have to rewash it again as 1 it will stink and 2 probably dirty marks on the items where they rested on the line plus peg marks.

How stupid do you have to be not to remove washing from outside when it rains? If you are out for the day and its forecasted rain - you don't put it out.

We had thunderstorms predicted yesterday and it was hot and sunny and I dried two lots of laundry.

OP I can see the thread is not going very well for you 😂

rainsofcastamere · 22/09/2024 09:35

I can't imagine ever being boring enough to give a fuck what my neighbours were doing with regards to their laundry.

ThatMakesSense · 22/09/2024 09:37

Weird

funinthesun19 · 22/09/2024 09:38

If I’ve been out and it’s been raining, I won’t be in any rush to bring my wet washing in when I get home. It can stay there.

It rained overnight last night and I forgot to take my dry washing in yesterday, so it’s wet again now. Do you think I went outside and brought it in this morning? Nope. Do you think I will be bringing it in at any point today? Probably not.

Stickytreacle · 22/09/2024 09:39

It used to be the done thing to bring in a neighbour's washing if it had dried and rain was imminent when I was young. A sad sign of the times that we judge instead of helping out.

Taytocrisps · 22/09/2024 09:41

I regularly put laundry outside and then get caught out when it rains. That's because I get busy doing other things (e.g. hoovering) and don't notice that it has started raining. By the time I do notice, the clothes are soaked, so I figure I may as well leave them there and let them dry in their own time. The laundry never smells though. And the weather forecast isn't 100% accurate which means the rain which wasn't forecast until 4 o'clock starts at 2 o'clock instead. I would be a bit concerned about my neighbours' wellbeing if I thought they were obsessing about my laundry.

Mycatisbetterthanyourcat · 22/09/2024 09:41

I'm obviously in the minority, but I would bring it in and re wash.....I honestly haven't noticed what my neighbours do with theirs though.

As a side note - intetesting that being rained on is preferable to being darked on as far as mumsnet is concerned. Judging by this thread.

catgirl1976 · 22/09/2024 09:41

I don’t re wash mine. I wait till it dries. It doesn’t stink it’s outside in the fresh air and I live next to the sea and the rain is lovely

IsItFinallySeptemberYet · 22/09/2024 09:42

I couldn’t give a hoot about someone else’s washing.

beesmithwentworth · 22/09/2024 09:43

@funinthesun19

Me too. Op I'm sorry if our 'stupidness' bothers you.

I don't check the weather forecast.
I won't be bringing my now wet washing in. I'll just wait for it to dry again.
As a single parent to 2 DC with SEN needs I am run ragged most of the time (including yesterday) and the small things that clearly bother you don't even register with other people who have more important things going on.

How many people these days leave their gates open though.

Or in our houses you couldn’t even get into our garden unless you where jumping over the fence or came in via the house/garage or doored ally way between the house and outbuildings.

AubrieDog · 22/09/2024 09:45

Sometimes it happens.

We love drying the washing outside so we do tend to chance pegging out washing on a showery day. On occasion we either don't notice the rain or we go out with the dog. Leaving washing out in the rain doesn't make someone a stupid person.

Rain dampened washing can be just hung on a maiden; it shouldn't stink or be dirty unless your neighbour has a garden fire but that doesn't generally happen on a rainy day anyway. And if you wipe your washing line periodically with a piece of wet kitchen roll you don't get black marks from pegs either.

We live in a terrace and there used to be a lovely elderly couple next door. We had a code that when we both had washing out the first one who noticed it was raining would lightly tap on the neighbours back window with a garden cane. It worked for years but the couple who live there now never put washing out. They probably think I'm stupid for hanging stuff out when it might rain...🙄

This is the second washing line thread I’ve seen recently where the OP was angry about their neighbour’s laundry habits.

Some of us have tumble dryers.

Some of us don’t care if the laundry gets a bit of rain on (it might be something like dog bedding, and mine always stinks regardless of how often I wash because the dog is always going out and getting muddy.)

Some of us have lives.

Mosaic123 · 22/09/2024 07:42

Rain gets the creases out of washing!

Leaving it out makes it stink? I didn't experience this when I used to leave washing out - now I live in a flat.

I once put my washing out and it ended up raining all day. I just left it. Next day weather was good and it dried . It still smelt like washing powder /comfort

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 22/09/2024 07:36

Maybe you should get a hobby?

I second this, your post is ridiculous

pictoosh · 22/09/2024 09:53

Why will it stink? Of what? Fresh air and...rain?

maudelovesharold · 22/09/2024 09:57

I’m not saying you are, but you sound like one of these insufferable people who likes to be control of everything/never makes mistakes/despises others who aren’t the same as you. Really, op…life’s too short/don’t sweat the small stuff/you do you…etc!

Danceswithweasels · 22/09/2024 10:12

This will blow your mind OP, if I need to leave early in the morning I sometimes hang my washing out before I go to bed even if it's a bit drizzly. 😯 minus pants however, as there is a knicker stealer in the village. If washing is nearly dry I would get it in if it started raining but otherwise I would leave it out, I don't have room to hang masses of wet washing indoors and it is far more likely to smell musty drying indoors than out btw.

Sherrystrull · 22/09/2024 10:21

AchillesLastStand · 22/09/2024 09:10

OP I completely agree with you. I never leave my washing out in the rain and it never gets left out overnight whatever the weather. I find it very strange that people choose to do that. But then I am a bit OCD about being organised and keeping on top of housework.

Yesterday where I am it was thundering and lightning for hours yesterday. One of the nearby houses was struck by lightning and the fire brigade was called out. I don’t think anyone could not be aware of how bad the weather is and it’s not hanging the washing out weather.

But what if you're out?

RobinEllacotStrike · 22/09/2024 10:21

Imagine being this overly involved in your neighbours washing 😂😂😂

Rain doesn't make your washing stink FGS.

Hawdyerwheesht · 22/09/2024 10:24

The odd time this happened to me, I loved the petrichor (or whatever it's called) scent left on the dried clothes once ironed.

FeralNun · 22/09/2024 10:26

Well, you’ve had your arse truly handed to you here, OP. And rightly!

Time for a bit of reflection? You could be happier than this you know..

kessiebird · 22/09/2024 10:27

My DM is retired with no one to look after apart from herself. She puts her washing out and brings it in when it's dry. If it rains in between it doesn't bother her. why should it bother any one else. She's 92 and has had a rare form of cancer for 7 years (incurable but treatable). She's learned to walk again after spinal compression caused by a tumor on her spine. She's far from stupid.

NortieTortie · 22/09/2024 10:30

We dont have room for a dryer and washer dryers are crap, so I often put washing out regardless of the forecast. If it gets caught in the rain, I'll leave it out til it dries. Never found it to smell damp - the opposite, normally it smells lovely and fresh.

Ilovemycatalot · 22/09/2024 10:34

How about getting a life? I feel sorry for people like you.
