Washing on lines in the rain.

Even with 72 hours of yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms from my home, I can see three gardens and yards (Victorian terraces) with washing on their lines!

When they do take their washing in, they have to rewash it again as 1 it will stink and 2 probably dirty marks on the items where they rested on the line plus peg marks.

How stupid do you have to be not to remove washing from outside when it rains? If you are out for the day and its forecasted rain - you don't put it out.

Yesterday The forecast said rain thunder and lightening in my area. We had blue sky and some clouds all day, I washed and hung out a load. Went out for most of the day. Came home to dry washing. Washed some towels, hung out early evening, went to bed, awoke to the sound of rainfall. Oh dear wet towels, silly stupid me. I hope my neighbours don't get their knickers in a knot over this. How will I ever live it down.

Chemenger · 22/09/2024 10:42

I often leave washing out if it’s been rained on. I’ve got a PhD so I don’t think I’m entirely stupid (although I must admit I do know fellow doctors who are short of common sense). It smells lovely when it finally dries and doesn’t have marks on it. When I was a child we lived way up north in the Highlands and everyone deliberately hung their washing out in the rain because the tap water was peaty. The rain washed the yellow peatyness out of the washing. I think the OP lives in 19th century Manchester.

OP I completely agree with you. I never leave my washing out in the rain and it never gets left out overnight whatever the weather. I find it very strange that people choose to do that. But then I am a bit OCD about being organised and keeping on top of housework.

Yesterday where I am it was thundering and lightning for hours yesterday. One of the nearby houses was struck by lightning and the fire brigade was called out. I don’t think anyone could not be aware of how bad the weather is and it’s not hanging the washing out weather.

Being on top of the washing sometimes means putting it out overnight, as that's the dry gap in the weather!

We got loads dry yesterday, despite the yellow warning. 🤷‍♀️

Are you diagnosed OCD, or just using that annoying phrase?

I think the OP is just not very proficient at washing / drying, given the information provided about their filthy washing line and pegs! 🤔

(My confession is that DH and I did discuss whether our neighbours were having a standoff about bringing the washing in when it stayed out for about 9 days! 😬🤣)

kitsuneghost · 22/09/2024 10:57

It's Sunday. There is a good chance they are at home..
They will bring it in when and if it rains.
Until then it's fine

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 22/09/2024 10:58

I quite readily admit that I’m not always ‘on top’ of the washing… my family always have clean clothes to wear, but washing has certainly been left out in the rain before. I have a full time job, a disabled child, 2 other children, hobbies, friends and family I like to see etc. I don’t see it as a moral failing though 🤷🏻‍♀️. I also can’t say I’ve ever noticed what is on my neighbours’ washing lines. What with having a life and all.

unsync · 22/09/2024 10:59

You only get marks if your line and pegs are dirty. Rain actually makes washing soft. I suppose if you live somewhere urban, it might get a bit grim from all the pollution.

Skipsurvey · 22/09/2024 10:59

i get annoyed if dh doesnt bring the washing in from the line in the rain.
and think if neighbours leave it out for days in the rain they are shabby

LittleBobbyDazzler · 22/09/2024 11:01

If your clothes are getting dirty marks on from the washing line I suggest you clean your line and pegs you scruff.

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 22/09/2024 11:01

I reckon I can live quite happily with the idea that my neighbours may think I’m ‘shabby’. If they’re the sort of people to care about other people’s washing lines, they’re probably not the sort of people whose opinion I value.

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/09/2024 11:02

Outrageous. Call the public decency brigade post haste.

crumblingschools · 22/09/2024 11:03

We have had weather warnings for rain and thunderstorms for the last 3 days. Yesterday and the day before in reality it was dry and sunny. To be fair the rain today is making up for the last 2 days!

Inspireme2 · 22/09/2024 11:07

My bed sheets have been on the line for a week.
I am most impressed the pegs have stayed in tack with the weather we have had recently.

that is obvious!

itsgettingweird · 22/09/2024 11:10

We had yellow weather warnings all day yesterday.

3 loads of washing blew dry beautifully on the line Grin

If it did rain I'd run outside and shove it in the basket. Hang it out inside on the airer.

Doesn't need rewashing. Pegs don't leave marks.

And I couldn't give a shit if my neighbours judge me either Wink

liveforsummer · 22/09/2024 11:12

ATM the forecast is nothing like reality so the washing goes out and you hope!

Tiredalwaystired · 22/09/2024 11:15

I can’t fathom how someone has the time or energy to invest in other peoples laundry habits.

herecomesautumn · 22/09/2024 11:24

I leave mine out if the rain comes on. It dries eventually

Where I live it doesn't stink and the pegs are clean so no dirty marks

And I'm far from stupid thank you very much

timeforanewmoniker · 22/09/2024 11:34

I don't understand why anyone choose to put their clothes on the line outside in this country. It's raining, and usually cold.

I guess if I was sitting in my house all day watching for it to rain so I could run out and bring it back in I'd do it. But I've got more interesting things to do.

Sorry but it doesn't really seem that smart to wait for it to "dry eventually" - very inefficient to be waiting days when you can just turn things around in a couple of hours, or maximum a day indoors.

Skipsurvey · 22/09/2024 11:38

i put in in the machine
retired dh puts it out and i check the weather forecast and let him know, it is due to rain at 4 pm, for example

Some of us are just stupid, OP. We can't all be super smart and with the programme like you 🤷

Bloom15 · 22/09/2024 11:39

My neighbour always hangs clothes on the rain - they put the rotary dryer under a massive umbrella

Anawi · 22/09/2024 11:41

You sound very judgmental and unpleasant here. How strange to care about other people's washing so much. 🤔

Setyoufree · 22/09/2024 11:44

Sherrystrull · 22/09/2024 08:35

I hang out the night before as I'm out early in the morning and it saves me ten extra minutes in bed!

Eeeew it'll get darked on! Joking I do the same!!

FairlyAntisocial · 22/09/2024 11:45

Ah! the final rainfall rinse, very au naturel, peg it right and the rain'll knock a few creases out too😉or maybe because it is just raining all the time?
