Washing on lines in the rain.

Mokel · 22/09/2024 07:36

Even with 72 hours of yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms from my home, I can see three gardens and yards (Victorian terraces) with washing on their lines!

When they do take their washing in, they have to rewash it again as 1 it will stink and 2 probably dirty marks on the items where they rested on the line plus peg marks.

How stupid do you have to be not to remove washing from outside when it rains? If you are out for the day and its forecasted rain - you don't put it out.

When I was growing up,it was normal to put "whites" out in the frost to bleach them,it also killed any germs. I don't get peg marks, not with todays plastic pegs. Washing "stink"!!! It smells of lovely fresh air.

Wonderwall23 · 22/09/2024 07:56

I think we've had yellow warnings in place since Friday and it didn't rain until late last night. I've dried 3 loads on the line over Friday and Saturday even though it did look like it was about to rain throughout. I also drove half an hour to DS's football in a winter outfit and coat and was sweating in bright sunshine. I guess my judgement yesterday was half good and half bad!

I've occasionally forgotten washing on the line overnight and left it to dry that day without washing it again. Maybe that's disgusting, I don't know...if it doesn't smell I'm not bothered. If I'd done it last night I'd probably re-wash it as it's continuing to rain all day. I'd not get all wet going out to get it in though..I'd just leave it out until it stops.

Maybe they don’t see the forecast.
maybe they had to go out unexpectedly.
Maybe they forgot they had washing out.
Maybe it doesn’t have any impact on your life whatsoever and you don’t need to waste so much time worrying about “stupid” people.

Maybe its Maybelline

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 22/09/2024 07:57

Maybe they hung it out when it was sunny and then got caught with the rain, and now it needs to stay there until it finally dries again. Plus, I really don't think rain washed clothes stink 🤷🏼‍♀️

Skyrainlight · 22/09/2024 08:00

Wow, I wish the height of my my life's concerns involved the drying practices other people's washing.

Neinneinnein · 22/09/2024 08:01

The things whuch cause stink where I live are slurry and my neighbour's 'coal' fire (that they seem be burn all manner of crap on).
Things which don't cause stink where I live are anything other than the above.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 22/09/2024 07:51

Imagine getting this worked up about how a total stranger decides to dry their clothes 🙄

Yes, and it says volumes about the op and how judgemental they most likely are about everything and everyone.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/09/2024 08:01

Well, the obvious answer is that they work for one of the Detergent Testing Laboraties and are just getting a bit of overtime in.

Similarly, I work in a Sock Testing Room (Toes and Heels) and often bring work home if it is a busy period (Christmas, usually) or if I am working on a particulary thorny problem.

MultiplaLight · 22/09/2024 08:04

Rained on washing doesn't stink.

It's nice and soft when is does come in.

No point trying to bring fully soggy washing inside.

JMSA · 22/09/2024 08:04

If we didn't take the risk here in Scotland, there would be a lot of empty washing lines about!

Sherrystrull · 22/09/2024 08:05

I'm out all day and we have a lot of washing. I would always hang out even if a bit of rain was forecast as it's often wrong and there's nothing worse than a lovely drying day and my washing is sitting inside.

LostittoBostik · 22/09/2024 08:06

I'm not exaggerating when I say I absolutely hate people like you.

You are the reason I will never, ever live outside a large city again.

auroraborearlarse · 22/09/2024 08:11

Where I live the weather is very changeable, sunny one minute, rain the next, then back to sun again. It's not worth bringing the washing in if its just a quick shower. And the washing always smells nice when it's been outside, whether it gets rained on or not.
P.S. If your pegs are leaving marks on your clothes maybe it's time to invest in some new pegs?

pandapopadance · 22/09/2024 08:11

I put my washing out yesterday morning.
Checked weather and rain at 3.
Went out planning to be back by 12, was having fun so stayed out later.
I wasn't coming home just to get my washing in before the rain!
Put it all in the dryer when I got home.
Do other people really judge my washing being out in the rain?!

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 22/09/2024 08:12

@Mokel perhaps they are planning to ask you to take in their washing and rewash it for them???? after all, you dont seem to have anything else to do!!

Bjorkdidit · 22/09/2024 08:13

Where are you and where are you seeing this OP?

The Met Office warning looks like it's going to be a bit showery today at worst, unless you're in Wales so washing probably will dry.

Rained on washing doesn't 'stink' btw, don't know where you get that idea.

Off to hang the washing out, forecast looks fine here.

Judellie · 22/09/2024 08:14

As explained by a previous poster, rain makes the washing soft. Also, right now, there's not enough room for it in the house til I clear what IS dry and put that away, so it may as well stay out there til I'm ready and the sun should come out again later anyway.
Not sure why you care.

Enko · 22/09/2024 08:15

I hung washing out with a yellow warning yesterday and it dried before it rained. The towels on 2nd load didn't and yes they are hanging out.thwre as we didn't get them in on time.

I don't see what the issue is. I had one load dried in time. At a max I will stick them through a rinse cycle I don't re wash.

scalt · 22/09/2024 08:16

I check forecasts meticulously, but I'm not too fussed about washing being out in rain: although it is irritating, I see it as an extra rinse. If it's a brief shower on a sunny or windy day, I just leave it out, and sometimes it does dry again. If it has got very wet indeed, I then put it in the machine again, put it on a spin cycle, and then put it all on radiators to dry.

With automatic washing machines (not many of us will remember twin tubs: my grandmother kept hers going for 35 years; British made appliances lasted well in those days), you don't see how wet the washing actually gets: you only see it damp when it comes out after the spin. There was an occasion when my washing machine missed out the spin for some reason: I opened it, and the clothes were soaking wet, much wetter than they would have been in rain. It was a revelation to me how wet the clothes actually get during the normal course of being washed in a machine.

OhmygodDont · 22/09/2024 08:17

Are you one of those that believes it cannot get darked on either.

Nothing bad happens you know. The night sky doesn’t kill your clothes. Rain here at least certainly doesn’t stain or make them smell.

Maybe you live in a very polluted area. Even our 90 year old neighbour. Sometimes leaves his out overnight.

Wazzupp · 22/09/2024 08:17

Why have people put washing out so early in the morning?? 🧐

kenidorm · 22/09/2024 08:21

How stupid do you have to be not to remove washing from outside when it rains?

I'm interested for you tell me OP

I don't always notice when it's started to rain, if it's rained on my washing for a while I can't be arsed going to get it, might as well just leave it if I'm rewashing anyway - no point getting drenched at that stage.

Forecast isn't something I have ever looked at, I make my judgement based on what's outside my window, I'm not good at imagining the future generally and it doesn't stop with the weather.

I am autistic and have ADHD though and these affect both my ability to see ahead of time, hence not taking in the forecast, and my observational skills of what's going on around me.

If you want to judge me as stupid because I left my washing out in the rain thats entirely your problem.

ALunchbox · 22/09/2024 08:21

It's good not to use a drier. Well done to them.

AnImaginaryCat · 22/09/2024 08:22

Dirty marks? Will they be yellow? Is that what the warning is about?

What will it smell of? Wind?

Please help me, I've sometimes left washing outside in the rain, so need your vast brought-in-the-washing intelligence.
