Washing on lines in the rain.

Even with 72 hours of yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms from my home, I can see three gardens and yards (Victorian terraces) with washing on their lines!

When they do take their washing in, they have to rewash it again as 1 it will stink and 2 probably dirty marks on the items where they rested on the line plus peg marks.

How stupid do you have to be not to remove washing from outside when it rains? If you are out for the day and its forecasted rain - you don't put it out.

I’d hate to live somewhere with stinky dirty rain. My washing is always line dried, all year round and is never smelly or dirty if it’s been rained on. I live by the coast and the sea breeze dries it quickly, even in inclement weather.

I'm not doubting you, LissaGa, or others who've said similar.
We must have different air or something though. I put my washing out when it's winter (but dry) & it just sits there, wet. I always have to bring it back in later & lay it all around the house, still wet.

Rented house so technically I'm not allowed to dry stuff on radiators, though I do sometimes.

You need to invest in a heated airer. My daughter lives in a back to back terrace with no garden and she says the airer is the best device she’s ever bought.

I keep mine out in the rain. Where else can I put it?

Sometimes it dries, get rained on, dries again, get rained on.

DewyDrops · 22/09/2024 13:38

Thank you LissaGa I've looked at them for the past couple of winters but they are so expensive. Maybe this year!

another forecast watcher, i use yr.no

I use Weather Radar. BBC and Met Office are really unreliable here. Not sure if it's because we're coastal. 🤷‍♀️

I cross check all three sometimes though! 😬🤣

Vintagegoth · 22/09/2024 16:00

Are you my neighbour?

Alright, I was just wondering how you managed to fit it all in that’s all 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’d probably be a lot more organised with my washing if I wasn’t out of the house from 7.30am-6pm every day.

Same here. Somehow I need to fit my washing in around the weather and 37 hours working a week

What your neighbours do with their laundry is their choice.

I have a dryer but try as much as possible to get my laundry dry or quite dry before drying a load to lower the usage amount of time.

I had a neighbour at the first home i bought who complained about laundry on lines.
A male neighbour bought a massive pair of white y fronts and smeared them with cheap melted chocolate and left them out for a week. The complaining neighbour phoned environmental health but was told there was nothing they could really do lol.

You dont like dirty stinky rain dont ever move to Manchester you would go mental.

Boxofstars · 23/09/2024 01:48

My neighbours next door but one have a small garage.
In the colder months if its a dry day they use the washing line. If its raining they also have a line in their garage and hang laundry in there till its dry or if almost dry finish off in the dryer for a short while..

I dont have a garage just a small shed.
I only dry towels and bedding in my dryer and use a heated airer for clothes like jeans or tops that cant go in the dryer.

TofuTart · 23/09/2024 01:52

Are you one of my neighbours?! 🤣
Weather is so bloody stupid nowadays, it'll be blazing sunshine and I'll put it on the line before I go to work (I work shifts)- by the time I get home it will be absolutely pissing it down or hail stoning or something so I just think "ah feck it" and leave it out there 😬
Why do you care so much, go back to Strictly or Neighbours lol

When I had babies in washable nappies I used to hang them out in the rain on purpose! We had really hard water so rainwater would rinse all the mineral residue out and leave them super soft.

I don't really know why you care tbh.

You hung your babies on the washing line??!!!
😁😁😁

Sorry, pressed too soon! Of course, you didn't but I had a vision of a line of babies swinging gently in the breeze...

shiningcuckoo · 23/09/2024 04:51

I'm a potter. I hang my potting clothes, towels and apron on the line in the rain to rinse away the dust. It clogs drains.

Oblomov24 · 23/09/2024 05:40

I never leave mine out in the rain. I've seen people that do and yes I do think it smells different, stale, and on occasion it does get dirty from 'dirty rain'.

MorrisseyGladioli · 23/09/2024 05:44

I leave mine out until its dry.

More things to worry about.

Sartre · 23/09/2024 05:48

Are you my Grandma? She thinks it’s slovenly when people leave washing on the line overnight. Really isn’t that deep though, not everyone checks the weather forecast before hanging washing out…

Yes doesn't everyone, when the crying limescale build-up gets too much?

Deary me. If that's the best you've to worry about, you're a lucky person...
