Washing on lines in the rain.

Even with 72 hours of yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms from my home, I can see three gardens and yards (Victorian terraces) with washing on their lines!

When they do take their washing in, they have to rewash it again as 1 it will stink and 2 probably dirty marks on the items where they rested on the line plus peg marks.

How stupid do you have to be not to remove washing from outside when it rains? If you are out for the day and its forecasted rain - you don't put it out.

I live in a village and my towels have been out for two days as I didn't see the forecast. OP what a silly fuss. They didn't stink and there are no peg marks.

Gymmum82 · 22/09/2024 08:55

Mines out. I got home later than expected and it got rained on. It’ll stay out now until it’s dry

darksideofthemooncup · 22/09/2024 08:56

I live in a block of flats with shared washing lines. We have one neighbour that leaves washing out for days on end, clogging up the space so that other people can't use them. She also puts her stuff out in random clumps with massive spaces between clothes, It drives me nuts.

Imnotarestaurant · 22/09/2024 08:56

I never knew about rain water making the washing soft in hard water areas! (Off to check the towels that got rained on yesterday to see if they’re soft…)

HowYouSpellingThat10 · 22/09/2024 08:58

I've been known to peg washing out during light rain. If it's forecast to brighten up later and I have to leave for work or go out.

It can be practically dry in an hour if there's a breeze so I opt for pegging out even if I know it won't be fully dry.

I peg all year round. Occasionally I get it wrong and it gets soaked. Like others I'd leave it til rain eases then just give it another spin. But it's surprising often how dry it is even after a soaking.

I don't understand how people don't peg out more. My measure are my 80 plus year old neighbours. They seem to have a sixth sense of when it will be fine whatever the forecast says!

mumda · 22/09/2024 08:59

I have a neighbour who fetched another neighbour's washing in as it started raining. It was very kind of him but I did wonder how he'd seen her washing out as he'd really have to be perving leaning right out of his windows.

sandgrown · 22/09/2024 08:59

There shouldn’t be marks if you wipe the line before pegging out . Redried line washing smells much better than washing just left to dry inside for days.

Silviasilvertoes · 22/09/2024 09:00

MaybeImbad · 22/09/2024 07:41

Maybe they forgot / thought they’d risk it / stayed out longer than planned / anything really.

How nasty do you have to be to call folk stupid for something so insignificant?

My mother used to look out of her kitchen window daily and loudly criticise our neighbour because of how she pegged her washing out. Two whole pegs to every item - so wasteful! That’s my mother through and through.

MouseofCommons · 22/09/2024 09:02

It doesn't smell and the pegs won't leave dirty marks.
If mine gets wet and it's not urgent it stays out.

I judge my neighbours who never put washing out much harder.

Startingagainandagain · 22/09/2024 09:02

-Get a new hobby. Being a nosey neighbour is really not an attractive trait
-I assume it is not raining yet, so they are simply trying to dry the washing as much as they can before they need to take it back indoors.

Bluemonkey2029 · 22/09/2024 09:02

My dog's bed and blanket really needs a wash. They've been on the line all week getting a great pre-wash from the rain before they go in the machine. The more rain the better. Dog is sad he's down to only 2 beds and a beanbag not his usual 3!

"There is a yellow warning basically every day these days it feels like."

This

yikesanotherbooboo · 22/09/2024 09:03

I left some of the washing out overnight; it was wet and the worst that was going to happen was that it would get wetter. I don't live in a city so the washing doesn't stink or get dirty on the line.

Bellatrixpure · 22/09/2024 09:03

Because the forecast is never wrong is it!? Yesterday it was forecast for sunny intervals all afternoon so I washed two loads with the school uniforms. The sun didn’t come out, may have been some slight sea fret in the air but I put my washing out and it didn’t dry completely. It’s on the clothes airer now

SnapdragonToadflax · 22/09/2024 09:03

I tend to leave mine out if I think it'll dry later. Clever, not stupid - why waste the electricity drying it inside?

I don't find it smells if it gets rained on once and dries reasonably quickly afterwards. It's having around damp for days - either inside or outside - that makes it smell.

PoisedLemonLeader · 22/09/2024 09:04

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 22/09/2024 07:36

Maybe you should get a hobby?

I think she already has, laundry watching

SeatonCarew · 22/09/2024 09:05

How well I recall those far off, halcyon days when,"Live and let live" was a thing.

Hannahspeltbackwards · 22/09/2024 09:05

Maybe you should knock on their doors and express your concern for them.
Tell them you cared enough to put a post on mumsnet about it.

Failing that just forget about it, and focus on your own washing.

EI12 · 22/09/2024 09:06

I leave the washing on the line - after the rain, it will dry out if you leave it long enough.

Pussycat22 · 22/09/2024 09:07

Never mind a hobby, get a life!!!!

hot2trotter · 22/09/2024 09:08

It's not something I would do, but it doesn't bother me if anyone else does.

teatoast8 · 22/09/2024 09:09

My clothes got wet on the line once. Guess what I didn't rewash it. Just put in the dryer.

twentysevendresses · 22/09/2024 09:10

Why would it stink?? This makes absolutely no sense at all, unless the rain where you live is made of shit 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I put mine out last Friday (no rain forecast) and went to work. It rained...all weekend...my washing stayed out until Tuesday, when we had sun and wind. It doesn't stink, no 'black lines' (don't understand this either!) and just got put away as normal.

So much drama and stress about washing is unhealthy OP. Get a life 👌🏻

AchillesLastStand · 22/09/2024 09:10

OP I completely agree with you. I never leave my washing out in the rain and it never gets left out overnight whatever the weather. I find it very strange that people choose to do that. But then I am a bit OCD about being organised and keeping on top of housework.

Yesterday where I am it was thundering and lightning for hours yesterday. One of the nearby houses was struck by lightning and the fire brigade was called out. I don’t think anyone could not be aware of how bad the weather is and it’s not hanging the washing out weather.

NinaPersson · 22/09/2024 09:10

yuck, where do you live where you get dirty streaks on your washing if it rains? Never happens to me, if I ever get caught out with rain it doesn’t smell really.

I don’t think you’re getting the resounding agreement that you hoped for @Mokel
