How would you feel, if your DH bought you a bib?

He bought me an adult pelican bib! He thinks it's hilarious.

It says on it "if you can read this, I haven't had my dinner yet". I do drop food on myself, fair enough, but I just think this isn't funny.

And, given that I'm never going to wear it, a total waste of time, because to send it back, he has to parcel it back up and drive some distance to a post office, because we don't have a post office in our town.

I don't know if my sense of humour is lacking, but I feel offended. Maybe that's too strong a word, I don't know, maybe belittled or like he's thinking I'm not sexy, if that makes sense? Maybe I need to lighten up!

YABU - lighten up, it's just a joke

YANBU - I wouldn't like that either

Its clearly a joke

Jifmicroliquid · 29/08/2024 08:09

I’d laugh and wear it.

Maybe you spilling food down yourself is something you need to look at.

Doggymummar · 29/08/2024 08:10

Brilliant idea, I had one for my 5oth I was eating Singapore chilli crab which is a very messy meal indeed. Protection for my party dress

BCBird · 29/08/2024 08:10

I'd laugh. Tell him u will wear it tonight when he makes dinner

Hateam · 29/08/2024 08:10

Unless this is a deliberate dig at you for some reason, it's just a joke.

He saw it and thought it would be a giggle?

It's not very funny IMO but it might not be nasty.

Hectorscalling · 29/08/2024 08:10

I think it was a joke. And I would guess it was cheap. Why would you send it back?

Singleandproud · 29/08/2024 08:11

I think he's addressing something that irritates him in a light hearted way.

Take the hint and eat at a table where you don't spill your food down yourself.

BCBird · 29/08/2024 08:11

Any chance of a link? I might treat myself- save washing tea towels all the time- napkins too small.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/08/2024 08:12

Jokes are when the other person laughs.

BananaGrapeMelon · 29/08/2024 08:12

I'd be really upset about this. I wouldn't find it funny at all.

AlienFromAnotherWorld · 29/08/2024 08:12

Gift him an adult diaper :)

Bibblunders · 29/08/2024 08:13

Okay fair enough. It was definitely a joke, that I do know. I just felt mildly irritated by it. It's maybe a bit deep seated in me, we haven't had much sex lately, and this just made me feel a bit shit.

CryptoFascist · 29/08/2024 08:14

I would find it belittling.

PinkyGold · 29/08/2024 08:14

Just bin it. It was a joke which misfired but adults don't usually end up with food on their clothing unless there is some other issue...

cosyleafcafe · 29/08/2024 08:15

I mean yes it's clearly a joke, however I don't think it's a very good one. I'd also feel shit and unattractive if my partner did this.

TheChosenTwo · 29/08/2024 08:15

Dh always talks about getting me a bib, not sure if I’d actually properly laugh out loud if he bought me one but I wouldn’t look so deeply into it that I would be mortally offended.
I’d probably wear it for dinner that night, the kids would definitely find it hilarious.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 29/08/2024 08:16

Presumably it's a joke.

Why are you dropping food all the time? We eat at a table for all meals and use cotton napkins on our laps. I've managed not to drop food on my clothes for the last 50 odd years.

I appreciate it might be different if you don't have a table though.

I’m not sure why you keep refering it to sex. I don’t see the link. If you keep dropping food on yourself it is something to look at as that’s not normal. And bib or not, he will react to that. It would need to be fairly major if you think it’s enough to put him off sex.

DustyLee123 · 29/08/2024 08:16

Yea, it’s belittling. What a prince.

mynameiscalypso · 29/08/2024 08:16

I might get my mum one. She always says that her large chest means that she ends up dropping food down herself all the time

lazyarse123 · 29/08/2024 08:16

I would laugh because I am incapable of even drinking coffee without spilling it down myself.
I bought myself a nice white top and DH said I hope you're not wearing that if you're going to be eating.
I don't think it's mean my family either laugh or roll their eyes at me.

Josephinesnapoleon · 29/08/2024 08:16

But wouldn’t you feel that if you kept dropping food on yourself?

Jokes are when the other person laughs.

Yes, this is one those 'jokes'.which is actually just thinly disguised mockery. It's not nice.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 29/08/2024 08:17

I'd call him a cheeky git and laugh my head off.

But it depends what type of relationship you have and whether it's actually playful or not.

In my relationship we take the piss out of each other and can be daft so something like this would genuinely just be a joke and it'd be funny.

But different people have different relationships and different senses of humour so really there are so many factors.

It's your relationship so how other people would feel if their partner did it isn't all that helpful because maybe in your relationship this sort of thing is a dig, maybe you aren't jokey people, maybe there's a history that gives it a more negative meaning etc.

NewNameNoelle · 29/08/2024 08:18

I’d think it was a joke, but a bad one at my expense and I wouldn’t be hugely happy but I’d assume it was innocently misjudged in the case of my DH.

Depending on other issues it might make me re-evaluate my relationship.
