To ask what ‘far right’ means to you?

Let’s not make this a Southport thread, just a political one. I consider myself a centrist and voted Lib Dem (to get us back in EU but that’s another story).

There’s been a lot of talk of ‘far right’ on here over the last few days, but very few observations on what far right actually means. To me it means things like capital punishment, enforced religion, open state misogyny, a blanket ban on abortion, homosexuality being outlawed, that sort of thing.

To me, having justified concerns about immigration, having views on new house building, voting Conservative or disapproving of Just Stop Oil protestors doesn’t make you ‘far right’. Centre or right of centre perhaps, but not far right.

What do you think?

I know you said not to mention Southport but those rioters epitomise far right for me. Thick, white, middle aged, small minded men who can't tolerate or understand anything other than their own narrow views. Hence why they also hate homosexuality and women. And why they go abroad to order full English breakfasts and pints of John smiths. To me it's pure ignorance teamed with aggression. If they don't want to learn about other ways of life, fine. But they actively try to violently abolish them.

Is racism, ageism and sexism ‘far right’ to you? Would you say Saudi Arabia is far right?

It depends though doesn’t it, justified is subjective.

StormingNorman · 01/08/2024 18:58

Racist jingoistic bigots.

I say that from a centre right perspective with liberal views on immigration.

So, Australia? China? Japan? All of which have very strict immigration laws compared to here?

To me it means white supremacists.

Begsthequestion · 01/08/2024 19:00

Racist, white nationalist, white supremacist, fascist.

You know, the normal definition of far right.

Nice try though.

cupcaske123 · 01/08/2024 19:01

Authoritarian, ultranationalist, no freedom of press, ethnocentrism, no freedom of speech etc are far right.

WrittenOnWater · 01/08/2024 19:02

White supremacy, nationalism, a preoccupation with Islam, extreme misogyny.

TomDaleysShavedBalls · 01/08/2024 19:02

Do you have to be white to be far right?

Rainbowsponge · 01/08/2024 19:02

Beth216 · 01/08/2024 18:59

To me it means white supremacists.

To me it does as well but also countries which have the death penalty, state misogyny, enforced religion and so on (many of which are not white). Do you not consider these to be far right countries?

I would say so, it’s to the extreme, very hostile to outsiders, patriarchal, enforced norms around religion, status of women, homophobia etc etc. I don’t think far right is just about being white it’s about a set of behaviours and views towards the non in-group people (which weirdly tends to be men oof the same colour and religion).

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/08/2024 19:03

I would say Saudi Arabia is is an extremist right wing state.

For me, far right is a promotion of racist, homophobic, misogynist thinking. The far right are the meatheaded fuckwits rioting and anyone contributing to or supporting them.

They are very different from run of the mill Centre Right people.

That’s interesting because that poster used clear racial, age related and sex related slurs in their post. Yet considers themself to be a tolerant, left wing, anti-bigot no doubt.

The far right, like a pp, to me means white supremacy. However I recognise your description for the black men that I know who hate white people. Your description also fits many religions, which we have to accept and many countries. So, as a woman, to know your enemy is complicated.

Cadela · 01/08/2024 19:05

Racist thickos who fall for any old claptrap if an old white man that rapes women says it.

Vile the whole lot of them. I’d take a million immigrants over any of those old rioting cunts.

Beepbeepz · 01/08/2024 19:05

Those far right supporters chanted "English till I die".

Far right means to me that an individual is misogynist, racist xenophobic, low-average IQ, poorly educated/not well read or spoken, the regular arrogant pub goer/drunk, football hooligan, led by MSM and propaganda, runs with the mob, not capable of critical thinking or empathy.

Far left can be similar is some ways; they are a few differences, however, but they are no better IMO.

Edited

Immigrants from where? Which country doesn’t have xenophobia, racism or riots? Possibly Iceland, but I can’t think of many others?

TinyYellow · 01/08/2024 19:06

To me it means racism and xenophobia dressed up as patriotism. It is unreasonable and uninformed ‘concern’ about immigration and minority religions.

toooldforbrat · 01/08/2024 19:07

isnt it said political views are horseshoe shaped with far left and far right coming together.

in my view it’s an opinion that they and only they are correct, no discourse or dissent allowed.

The U.S.S.R. had the death penalty. So did communist China.

Begsthequestion · 01/08/2024 19:09

The UK had the death penalty. USA still does. That doesn't mean a place is far right.

Far right is racist, authoritarian, neo nazi, white nationalist. Etc.

Flibflobflibflob · 01/08/2024 19:09

Yeah I think it can be anywhere, I consider Modi to be far right (I know some people won’t agree with me but he’s an ethno-nationalist imo).

FayeGreener · 01/08/2024 19:09

It’s a meaningless phrase these days and basically means “anyone who believes things I don’t agree with”.
