Totally disgusted by those rioting in Southport

1000 replies

Bex5490 · 30/07/2024 22:18

Southport has experienced the most unbelievable tragedy.

Their emergency services had to respond to probably the most traumatic calls they’ve ever had, yet tonight they are being attacked by thugs?

The latest is that these people are destroying people’s homes to get bricks with which to throw at the police.

I am heartbroken, bewildered and disgusted. How dare they destroy the homes of that grieving town.

I am when the police face machete wavers with so little defence and are expected to defend you and me from unbridled anarchy

I meant on the Menezes case like you think that led to other undesirable things.

Your post also linked Menezes to an ear being grazed. If a reader didnt know who he was they might assume Menezes did something dreadful, got a little bit wounded and the police got wrongfully blamed.

You don't mean that but that's how it reads.

I’m truly sorry you had to experience all that @scatterolight , but that’s a Man thing, not a Particular Ethnicity thing. We shouldn’t have to put up with it, it’s true, but I experienced many of those abusive things from White men.

It’s male violence expressed through culture.

It happens everywhere. In Scotland there is still sectarian violence around old firm games and Alcohol is still a pervasive problem. This has an impact on DV rates and they spike around game time.

All male violence but you have to understand the culture in order to tackle the violence

Saucery · 01/08/2024 16:51

Funnily enough, the men most likely to harass me as a girl and young woman were also racist pigs, if I happened to know them from my wider community. Particularly the ones when I worked behind a bar in a Conservative Club. I’ve never experienced misogyny like it! Telling me I needed to wear a shorter skirt, that I should take my glasses off, undo a button or 3 if I wanted a tip, whistling me over like a dog if the Steward wasn’t in earshot (he didn’t stand for that sort of nonsense).

scatterolight · 01/08/2024 16:41

OK. Well here were the consequences for me as a young white female whose home town was taken over by a particularly ethnic minority in the 90s/2000s:

-Street harrassment
-Being followed home
-Being groped at the bus stop
-Being groped on the Tube
-And the cherry on the cake - being molested and stalked by my GP who discovered that I was not yet sexually active from my medical records

You'd have to live under a rock to be unaware that with certain immigrant populations come with stone age attitudes to women. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Aside from the fear of crime and sexual violence, there's that lovely feeling of complete alienation when your home turns into another country overnight.

You sound like my sons partner who grew up in West Yorkshire and has experienced much of this. Her parents sold up, moved out of the district to feel safe as many others did before and after.

You think that the Scottish police are more prepared because they understand the violence?

scatterolight · 01/08/2024 16:57

Fluufer · 01/08/2024 16:46

Perhaps if you had grown up elsewhere you would know that white men do those things too

I'm sorry but that is total fantasy. My area was White and I experienced none of those things until the arrival of the minority group. And now since moving away I have experienced none of them again. And my experience was nothing compared to the poor girls passed around uncles, brothers and cousins by grooming gangs.

But yeah you keep telling yourself that this behaviour is comparable across all groups if it helps you sleep better.

I know the Scottish police had a trial where before old firm games, targeted known DV offenders, warning them in advance and there was a drop in DV related incidents.

So yes, understanding culture means you understand violence. At that point you can tackle violence

So culture is incredibly important to understand

That's really interesting, thank you. Our police force get seconded into other forces now and again when there's trouble. They say it's another world out there when they return.

On the other hand a friend has moved back to Wales from London her husband was in the met for years , he finds it stultifying because his transfer to here is lacking in the adrenaline pumping incidents he's so used to. He's really struggling to adapt.

Yes, I would never go out on the night of an Old Firm because of the complete idiocy and hatred from the minority. I have a son who supports Celtic and a son who supports Rangers (me and their Dad support opposing teams!) so there is not a shred of intolerance.

I think the problem is though that you can clearly see a persons colour, so when some do wrong it's as if everyone who is not white has done wrong. So many innocent people have to deal with being prejudged. You've made a very good point comparing with sectarianism as it is a 'culture', but as with anything, it is not all.

Discussions like this always remind me of the interview with Muhammed Ali where he gave the snake analogy.

@scatterolight I am so sorry you had to go through that Flowers I have been through similar (although not with anyone non white British) and it is awful. I hope you are ok

It’s a shame you are so intent on dismissing the lived experience of other women 😕. Never mind, perhaps it will help casual lurkers realise that VAWG isn’t confined to one ethnicity or religion.

justasking111 · 01/08/2024 17:12

Isn't it pathetic when men go home and thump their loved ones because of a game played. They really are the lowest knuckle draggers.

And it not just a game/sport violence against women and children can arise for so many reasons.

Do you think though that in part your treatment was down to misogynistic men’s tendency to categorise women?

For example I bet the men in the conservative club that harassed a PP didn’t speak to their wives that way. Only a young barmaid.

Clearly some groups of men in areas like your saw white girls as less than and acceptable to harass and abuse. Obviously disgusting.

But I wonder how young girls in Thailand would describe how they are treated by white men who come over to abuse their poverty and vulnerability?

I’m sure their experiences would mirror yours because like people have said, these are characteristics of problematic men, not a particular race or culture. They just have different targets.

I agree with this being more to do with men rather than race, I experienced very similar stuff growing up in Edinburgh and in my personal experience every single one was a white man someone mentioned a GP being inappropriate, I've never forgotten my friend telling me when we were about 15 that her dentist always managed to miraculously touch her boob by mistake, she called him an old perv, he'd be called something different today, he was also white

So on the opposite side, how do you think men from the western world treat women from these third world countries that you describe?

Who are the largest consumers of the trafficked women from poor countries in Eastern Europe?

Who are the men who were exploiting vulnerable women under the guise of offering humanitarian aid in Africa?

Who is it that creates the billion dollar American porn industry which capitalises off the poverty of some Americans?

I think labelling it a ‘somebody else’s problem’, some other culture, some other men not our own, is more simplistic and only looks at suffering from your own lens.

*In this universe being wolf whistled at when walking past a building site IS EXACTLY THE SAME as being gang raped by 40 men and having your tongue nailed to a table.

I despair of the levels of imbecility on here*

We must be in different universes then. I showed compassion to you, another woman who has experienced sexual assaults...mine included far worse than you said in your comment that I replied to (all by white men in my situation and wasn't a smack on the bum).

No one has said that other cultures may not view women as lesser (even more so than our own), but for you to call people imbeciles because you have only had bad experiences with people who migrated decades ago is quite frankly, disgusting.

Do you have DC @scatterolight? If so, curious as to what you might think if one of them dated a "third worlder" as you call it?

I have reported my last comment because I made a personal attack to the PP I disagreed with. Got a bit over emotional, my apologies!

BeyondOlympicLevelProcrastinator · 01/08/2024 18:24

I’ve literally been gang-raped by white men.
Equating complaining about violence by white men to “moaning about wolf-whistling” is so far beyond words that I’m honestly speechless

Piggywaspushed · 01/08/2024 18:26

Enough already with the 'third world' nonsense.

Saucery · 01/08/2024 18:36

“Third world attitudes to women” seems to be fine with MNHQ. So, I’m out. 🤷‍♀️

Someone DH knew had a second family in Thailand, apparently his wife knew nothing about. He did a lot of business out there. He'd go out four times a year. DH said the man thought she was lucky because he'd taken her off the streets and her parents lived there.

Made my skin crawl but what do I know.
