Totally disgusted by those rioting in Southport

Southport has experienced the most unbelievable tragedy.

Their emergency services had to respond to probably the most traumatic calls they’ve ever had, yet tonight they are being attacked by thugs?

The latest is that these people are destroying people’s homes to get bricks with which to throw at the police.

I am heartbroken, bewildered and disgusted. How dare they destroy the homes of that grieving town.

There's wet weather across the whole country tomorrow at different times of the day - front moving from the west to east - and quite a bit cooler

Sunday generally dry but also cooler

So some possible relief

Hopefully if we do end up with hordes of violent thugs, they might at least keep their clothes on.

@Scirocco 😂😂thank you!

@bombastix I think they actually melt, tough little warriors that they are.

Southport will light up pink as a mark of respect and solidarity with everyone affected following Monday's attack.

Sefton Council will illuminate The Atkinson building in Southport with a pink light, and many other councils and landmarks will also participate.

St George’s Hall, Liverpool Town Hall, the Cunard, The Mersey Gateway Bridge, Chester Town Hall and hospitals across the north west will also light up pink as a mark of respect on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening.

Beautiful. Let’s hope the violent, disrespectful thugs stay away.

I haven't heard the term 'debag' in many, many years!

Made me burst out laughing - a much-needed moment of lightness on a thoroughly bloody depressing thread.

LarkLane · 02/08/2024 20:26

When karma comes back to bite you on the arse. Literally.

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/08/2024 20:36

Agreed. When an attacker happens to be a Muslim, there is no end of "what are the Muslims doing about it, they must have known. Why haven't the Muslim Council issued an apology?" and so on. I've yet to hear cries of "what are Christians doing about it, they must have known. Why hasn't the king, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the head of the Catholic church in England issued an apology?". It's very telling that one faith is expected to accept responsibility for all attacks done by someone who happens to follow that religion but other faiths are not.“

Absolutely. Why was the Pope not asked to make a statement whenSaville’s crimes were made public? That white man assaulted, raped and damaged only god knows how many children during his lifetime but considered himself a devout Roman Catholic. Why was the Catholic Church not held accountable for his sins?

Because he was a sick individual. It wasn’t the fault of his religion. Just as the sins of Muslim criminals are not the fault of their religion.

(I’m an atheist and believe all religions are a nonsense)

So good to see ... a ring of support around a mosque in Liverpool.

We are not all like these disgusting Farage loving bigots.

The Vatican and the Catholic Church in England and Wales did issue statements on Saville;

How was the holiday?

Bless those counter protesters in Liverpool ❤

I'm not missing the point I replied to.

The holiday was great thanks - I hope Keir Starmer isn't planning a holiday in the next few weeks.

BustingBaoBun · 02/08/2024 21:05

I would imagine he would be on the ball. And managing anything that comes up.

Unlike Johnson who buggered off for weeks away during the summer recess. Mind you... I don't think it mattered if he was there or not.

Trouble in Sunderland

Unrest in Sunderland city centre as protesters target mosque - BBC News

Police also had beer barrels thrown at them, as young men chanted "whose streets, our streets".

Maybe they don't realise that when they are on the streets, others get worried about the violent threat some of them pose.

You are, but never mind.

Starmer is doing a great job imo. So glad we have adults in charge. It's a shame the far right can't be gracious in defeat. Seems "you lost, get over it" only works one way.

They are defeated at every election!

cakeorwine · 02/08/2024 21:25

There seem to be some long jail sentences for protesting and rioting nowadays.
We also have laws where people can be arrested even before they go to protest.

I wonder if we will see these laws - and maybe sentences - being introduced.

How many of these protestors are willing to go to jail for their beliefs?

bombastix · 02/08/2024 21:42

The sentences for riot and incitement are life sentences. Yes these are serious offences along with affray and violent disorder. They do mean prison time, because the offending is serious. It’s not something you get a slap on the wrist for.

Well I doubt Starmer will fuck off on holiday when the UK needs a firm steer. He is not like Johnson.

Now is the time for all of us, whatever our political differences, to unite against the people who want riot and insurrection. Don't you think?
