Totally disgusted by those rioting in Southport

Southport has experienced the most unbelievable tragedy.

Their emergency services had to respond to probably the most traumatic calls they’ve ever had, yet tonight they are being attacked by thugs?

The latest is that these people are destroying people’s homes to get bricks with which to throw at the police.

I am heartbroken, bewildered and disgusted. How dare they destroy the homes of that grieving town.

The sentences for riot and incitement are life sentences. Yes these are serious offences along with affray and violent disorder. They do mean prison time, because the offending is serious. It’s not something you get a slap on the wrist for.

I remember after the 2011 riots some really harsh sentences being given out for things like looting bottles of water from shops.

Starmer's first visit to Southport was a disaster - performative and wooden. At least Yvette Cooper took the time to read some of the cards and gave the local MP a hug.

It wasn’t a disaster at all, and one of the hecklers has already been identified amongst the rioters

Yes. People went to prison. It’s not so much what you do as the fact you participate that counts in law when you deal with riots; it’s about criminal intent. Legally very different from protest (where the last government also made the law much tougher).

PandoraSox · 02/08/2024 21:57

Clav. Read the bloody room.

Stop. Just stop.

How the fuck are you back? Some kind of dog whistle I guess.

Userjfxkgxkgxkgxkgx · 02/08/2024 22:17

Using the horrific deaths of 3 children to try and political point score is a new low for you @Clavinova

A disaster in your head maybe

bombastix · 02/08/2024 22:19

It’s more sad than low.

WildLemur · 02/08/2024 22:19

Clav, I've always had a certain amount of respect for you and, on some occasions, you've been able to sway me a little.

But you are debasing yourself here.

newnamethanks · 02/08/2024 22:37

Good woman. We nans should form a permanent protest group. Nans against Nasties, spelling variable.

It wasn’t actually. It was dignified and statesmanlike. Presumably it’s so long since you saw those qualities you’ve forgotten what they look like.

I think that you are definitely onto something. I've seen such evil this week but even more courage and goodness in ordinary people.

Perhaps Nans should infiltrate the U3A and invite Yarn bomber groups to a meet up?
A REAL protest against VAWG. The Battle of Cable Stitch Street?
Go💕Liverpool Nan!

The goodness in people is amazing. Coming together to clean up after people decided to riot after the awful tragedy in Southport. Forming rings around mosques.

It's heartwarming to see

They will be tracking down the organisers. The local people involved will already be known to the police. I remember years ago when there was a riot in the City I lived in a senior police officer I knew saying it was all the local thugs who they already knew.
