Desperate help - passport expired, travel on Wednesday

Nowanextraone · 20/07/2024 19:10

I feel sick. I don't understand how we have overlooked this as we renewed 2 of our other children's passports, but we've just seen our daughter's passport expired in January.

We are fucked aren't we? It says a child's passport can only be renewed urgently in a week.
I feel sick

Insurance won't even pay will it as it's our fault.

How long were you going for? Could you get an appointment monday and hope it comes through quicker?

Collexifon · 20/07/2024 19:12

Can you and her fly out later? Otherwise I can't see a way around it. Sorry 😪

EsmeSusanOgg · 20/07/2024 19:13

Can you see if you can book an urgent same day appointment? It is worth seeing if there are any available.

Goslingsforlife · 20/07/2024 19:13

can you push the holiday back? Otherwise one parent stays behind and flies out later.

MoleAndBadger · 20/07/2024 19:14

Is it a long haul or short haul flight? How long are you going for? Can you at least try and get the passport and fly out later?

Dragonsandcats · 20/07/2024 19:14

They won’t do same day for children. Liverpool glasgow and belfast have appointments on monday- could beg and hope they turn it around quicker?

SmallBug · 20/07/2024 19:14

Have you got Covid?
That might prevent you going.

hari27 · 20/07/2024 19:14

I think you need to try and get the first appointment you can wherever that is and go from there. What a nightmare OP 😢

Treeslovetrees · 20/07/2024 19:14

Are you near a passport office ???
look online for an emergency passport renewal and book an appointment slot.

AyrshireTryer · 20/07/2024 19:14

so sorry.

Croufer · 20/07/2024 19:15

I had to get a last minute passport due to theft last year. It was a straightforward experience. Booked an emergency appointment online - I went to Victoria. Had to pay for the express service but I had no other option. I went to the appointment in the morning, spoke to some bloke for 5 mins, went shopping and then picked up. Not cheap but nothing insane. I’d assume the same process applies to kids but not sure. I was in tears for days.

Good luck.

Dragonsandcats · 20/07/2024 19:15

you can’t use the 1 day premium for children!

Dragonsandcats · 20/07/2024 19:16

We’ve done the same as you by the way OP, DH had a 10 hour round trip to sort ours!

This!
Honestly OP it's shit but it's simply not going to be sorted by Wednesday.

Someone will have to stay home with her and travel later.

jennylamb1 · 20/07/2024 19:17

Could a family member look after her? Not ideal, but could be a workaround.
Can you amend the holiday/flight booking?

Nowanextraone · 20/07/2024 19:17

An adult would be fine to do an emergency on the day passport, but not a child 😪 apparently that's a week

Really? Why on Earth why?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 20/07/2024 19:18

I had a short notice appointment with / for my daughter once, at Newport. Something like 10 am in the morning and passport was ready to collect later that afternoon.

loobylou10 · 20/07/2024 19:18

We did the week one - only
Took 4 days. Liverpool - they were very efficient. Hope you sort it

Ionacat · 20/07/2024 19:19

Looking at the link, you can’t use the 24 hour service for a child’s first passport, so a renewal should be okay. I would book an appointment for Monday and cross everything.

Juliet194 · 20/07/2024 19:21

Ring the passport office first thing tomorrow morning, the helpline opens at 9am:

https://www.gov.uk/passport-advice-line

It might be possible to get it sorted by Wednesday.

Where are you flying to?

Passport advice and complaints

Contact HM Passport Office (previously the Identity and Passport Service) advice line - telephone, text relay, textphone, opening hours.

Just be aware that link is not for an official gov website. Don’t pay them any money.

I had a situation like this with my daughters passport albeit in 2022 - I got an in-person appointment on the 3rd and it was delivered to my home on the 7th - if you get a similar turnaround you might only miss a day or 2 of holiday.
