Desperate help - passport expired, travel on Wednesday

Nowanextraone · 20/07/2024 19:10

I feel sick. I don't understand how we have overlooked this as we renewed 2 of our other children's passports, but we've just seen our daughter's passport expired in January.

We are fucked aren't we? It says a child's passport can only be renewed urgently in a week.
I feel sick

Insurance won't even pay will it as it's our fault.

If one or both of you can get to a passport office on Monday then it is potentially sortable. Book an online appointment and make sure you explain the situation take all the passports with you as well as anything like an invoice about when you booked the holiday and if you've precooked activities or days out. and try to make sure that you are both contactable incase they want to contact the other... not likely that they will. Unfortunately they have to look at it from a perspective of what are you trying to get away with??? So if you can provide that you booked it months ago and you've pre booked activities for the kids it will all go in your favour

kitchendiscotime · 28/07/2024 07:38

Thank you so much for the update @Nowanextraone. I am in a similar position- I have an appointment tomorrow morning to renew DD's passport which I need back within 7 days because we fly the following Monday! Am shitting a brick it won't arrive in time so your update gives me hope.

Have a wonderful holiday!

Where would Mumsnet be without a man's viewpoint?

Beautiful3 · 28/07/2024 08:01

CoffeeNeededorWine · 28/07/2024 08:12

Praying it comes on Wednesday for you all 🙏 and it’s the start of a ‘new’ 2024 for you. Good luck. 💐

TUI are not someone I have travelled with in a long time, but they seemed a good holiday operator, and your situation seems to confirm that unlike many airlines at least, they have retained a level of service.

Have a lovely break.

@EdithBond

I know the sentiment but not all workers are low income. Some of us worked front line during the pandemic too, in my case delivering food, medicine, calling the vulnerable members of the congregation, visiting the sick, the dying, arranging funerals- and yes i willingly went into houses where I know they had active Covid . I don't expect anything (except the lovely manager at Morrison's who arranged for me to get the blue light discount) but it is annoying how my friends in wfh office roles in the nhs got free stuff! Oh and I still do these things, it's what churches do all the time.

IClaudine · 28/07/2024 08:23

What a lovely update. Have a fabulous time, OP.

UPDATE

I literally CANNOT believe how happy I am right now.
So, my husband went to the passport office and did all he could but there is very little they can do except guarantee it will be back within the week 😬 But she did tell him it's also likley to be sooner, but no guarantees.

Anyway, I read where several of you suggested I call the tour operator. It was booked through TUI 'NHS heroes' (we both work in the NHS).
I promptly burst into tears when I spoke to the woman. She was so so lovely to me and went off and spoke to her manager, who came back and offered us a free amendment to go in 12 days time!!!!! Obviously had to rush to confirm we could change our annual leave and we could, so of course we said YES!!

It's to a different hotel, but equally as amazing!!

Wow, I can't believe my luck! And thank you SO much for all the support.

What a fantastic update, so pleased for you @Nowanextraone. Have a lovely, well deserved holiday.

MrsPerfect12 · 28/07/2024 09:01

manysausages · 28/07/2024 09:09

I’ve just read through the OP’s posts and got a bit emotional at the last one. I’m so pleased for you that it worked out.

I’m using TUI next time I go abroad.

Sugarsugarahhoneyhoney · 28/07/2024 09:19

Dinkydo12 · 28/07/2024 12:33

Similar happened to friends. They missed their flight drove home. Contacted the passport office. Made an appointment for next day and got a passport for their DD flew later that day.

paisley256 · 28/07/2024 21:57

Croufer · 20/07/2024 19:18

Really? Why on Earth why?

I'd hazard its so one parent cannot steal away a child quickly stealthily, but thats a complete guess.

Croufer · 20/07/2024 19:18

Really? Why on Earth why?

They have to post it to the home address for safeguarding reasons I believe.

madmumofteens · 29/07/2024 18:56

Yay fab update OP glad you got it sorted ☺️

curlyrebel · 29/07/2024 23:39

No one said they were ogres but they can't just have pity and ignore all the rules because they feel sorry for you. If they just ignored the rules then I'd be very surprised if they weren't all fired.

The simple fact is that children's passport cannot be renewed using the 24 hour option as confirmed by the website, multiple posters and the OP and to say otherwise is just giving others who may read your post false hope.

The OP is doing the right thing and hopefully it will be back soon but it's sometimes best to be realistic about the situation.

Edited

I was basically saying give it a go, they can only say no.

Bamboozledbylife · 02/08/2024 19:52

Ahhh so pleased your story has a happy ending and hopefully cheers up what sounds like an awful year. Happy Holidays ⛱️
