Desperate help - passport expired, travel on Wednesday

Nowanextraone · 20/07/2024 19:10

I feel sick. I don't understand how we have overlooked this as we renewed 2 of our other children's passports, but we've just seen our daughter's passport expired in January.

We are fucked aren't we? It says a child's passport can only be renewed urgently in a week.
I feel sick

Insurance won't even pay will it as it's our fault.

People keep saying to call the passport office tomorrow, but surely they don’t work on Sundays? Good luck, OP, but I really think your chances of getting it in time to fly on Wednesday are very low.

They do work on Sundays. But op needs to make an appointment online.

TheSquareMile · 20/07/2024 20:28

Nowanextraone · 20/07/2024 19:11

We are supposed to fly Wednesday morning.
£6k down the drain

@Nowanextraone

Where is the flight from and to, OP?

CocoPlum · 20/07/2024 20:29

Knowing someone in this situation very recently- you cannot renew same day for a child - confirmed with multiple calls to passport office. It may arrive in under a week but you may need to wait a couple of days for the appointment as well.

I'd try to move the dates first, and if not can one parent travel with the other children and you join them?

How old is the child? If very young I see no reason not to ask relatives to step in and help out with child care while you are away. You could make it up to your child later. Mistakes happen, don't feel guilty. This of course is an idea having tried like crazy to get the passport urgently & failed

dbeuowlxb173939 · 20/07/2024 20:40

Can you change the dates of your holiday? Even if you have to pay an admin fee it's probably a better option than cancellation.

But as PP have said ring passport helpline first thing tomorrow and see what they say.

Lollzi86 · 20/07/2024 20:41

apply today for appt as quickest you can get an appt is next day so if you wait till Monday you won’t get one till Tuesday. Then hope and pray it arrives…time is flight weds? Where is it you are going? Is there any way you someone can stay with her and fly late? Or pray flights get cancelled/delayed because of crowdstrike

Zanatdy · 20/07/2024 20:41

Sorry OP but I very much doubt it will happen by Wednesday with it being a child’s passport. I’d look at cost of moving the holiday by a couple of weeks. Or others go and you join later if it’s a 2wk holiday. Good luck

ebadame · 20/07/2024 20:44

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 20/07/2024 20:01

I believe it's to try and reduce the risk of children being taken abroad in custody disputes and other times that might not be safe for the child

Yes seems a fair enough system

Really? Why on Earth why?

Risk of one of the parents whisking a kid out of the country if the other parent hides the passport. It’s happened before

Movingtothecity · 20/07/2024 20:49

@nottogetapenny That clearly says 24 hours is not available for child passport.

Gymmum82 · 20/07/2024 20:49

This happened to a friend back in the May holidays. Mum went with the other kids. Dad flew out 2 days later with the kid whose passport had expired. They did the week one from Liverpool and had it back in 4 days too

Oblomov24 · 20/07/2024 20:49

I'd book the next available appt at the passport office for a child in a week service. Meanwhile phone the passport office. Notes will be put on your account and this might just help. And when you do get there express the urgency, ask for notes or be put on the account, ask for it to be expedited. It may only take a few days. Then yours only be flying out one day late.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 20/07/2024 20:53

Movingtothecity · 20/07/2024 20:49

@nottogetapenny That clearly says 24 hours is not available for child passport.

No it doesn’t - it says it cannot be used for the child’s first passport or a lost / damaged /
stolen child’s passport. Neither of which apply here from the info the OP has given

Gcsunnyside23 · 20/07/2024 20:53

Op if you use the fast track kids can be done in a day, my niece was for a renewal. Worst case if lacking appointments check Belfast also, same day cheap flight is cheaper than losing holiday

maria2bela1 · 20/07/2024 20:54

You CAN DO emergency app for child's passport as long as it's not first passport

maddening · 20/07/2024 20:54

Get pictures printed and signed by appropriate people immediately and get an appointment and go in person as soon as they open

Nottogetapenny · 20/07/2024 20:55

Movingtothecity · 20/07/2024 20:49

If you read my post it say not available for a child’s first passport! Renew or amend a child passport

YorkshireLawyer · 20/07/2024 20:56

Sorry, OP, all you can do is the one week service, hope it comes back quicker and delay the flight for one parent and your daughter in the meantime. I don’t know why they don’t do a one day service for children, possibly some kind of safeguarding issue (?), but I don’t see what the difference between - day and a week is. If it makes you feel any better, I’ve just had to forego a long weekend to visit my sister with my daughter because I hadn’t realised her passport had expired. Not quite on the same scale, but you’re certainly not alone in making this mistake. I hope you manage to get something sorted.

SoSoller · 20/07/2024 21:02

Who did you book the holiday with? I wonder if it’s possible to change the dates rather than cancel?

GoingMadder · 20/07/2024 21:03

How reliable is the week turnaround time? Worth the gamble?

caniputthewashingout · 20/07/2024 21:09

Lots of incorrect info on here.
You CAN renew a child's passport using the 24 hour service. It clearly states this on the website.
OP just needs to make an appt for Monday and cross everything that it's sorted.

QuackQuackFuckThat · 20/07/2024 21:09

Ok so you can’t get a child renewal on the one day service.

Could you try the one week fast-track service? It says the earliest you can get an appointment is the day after you apply so I’d apply NOW and hopefully you can book the appt for Mon and hopefully they can rush it through 🤞

If it doesn’t arrive in time, one of you goes ahead with the other two and the other one will have to follow asap. It’ll cost more to book flights etc but not as much as you’ll loose on the holiday.

Pearl97 · 20/07/2024 21:10

As everyone says join an appointment anywhere for Monday. Without that you can’t do anything. Once you’re there it’s much easier to beg. I did it with my daughters.
