Desperate help - passport expired, travel on Wednesday

I feel sick. I don't understand how we have overlooked this as we renewed 2 of our other children's passports, but we've just seen our daughter's passport expired in January.

We are fucked aren't we? It says a child's passport can only be renewed urgently in a week.
I feel sick

Insurance won't even pay will it as it's our fault.

Lots of incorrect info on here.
You CAN renew a child's passport using the 24 hour service. It clearly states this on the website.
OP just needs to make an appt for Monday and cross everything that it's sorted.

The .gov website says the 1 day service is for adult renewal only. That's the official website. The fastest service for a child renewal is the 7 day service

littleoldme3 · 20/07/2024 21:13

I’m sorry but how on earth is anyone suggesting sorting out family childcare?! 😰 Can you imagine the poor kid?! “Sorry honey, I know you’ve been so excited about holiday but we forgot to renew your passport so we’re just going to go instead and you can stay with gran” 😂 surely nobody actually sees that as a valid option?!

@Nowanextraone Mistakes happen. It’s crap! Get the application in whatever the fastest way is and cross your fingers and toes!

It doesn't. It says the one day service is for adult passports. You can't use that service for a child's passport.

crampyi · 20/07/2024 21:17

@littleoldme3 i mean if they can get a passport for the daughter asap, then she can join them on holiday. It just might mean she spends a few days more at home with extended family, then meets the rest of her family a bit later. As long as she has appropriate care either end, I don’t see the issue.

Justhereforaibu1 · 20/07/2024 21:20

No advice but I hope you get sorted.

Replacing a lost, stolen or damaged child passport

What is the source for this information?
Because on all the UK government pages I’ve checked it seems the fastest you can renew a child passport is on the 1 week service (and that costs £135 odd so seems unlikely the 24 hour service would be quicker)….

Yes, I was thinking this too! It would only work if the child very young, or was likely to actually have a better time with Gran, than go on the holiday ( which is always possible I suppose!) 🤔
I’m sorry this is happening OP, I hope you can get it sorted.

If you're not in the UK it's probably best people don't rely on your advice

Thanks so much for heads up

An adult would be fine to do an emergency on the day passport, but not a child 😪 apparently that's a week

If you do the week turnaround it might surprise you if you get in asap- I think mine turned up four days.

It's also worth ringing them and explaining the situation, and again at the appointment. I called them up to ask if anyway to hurry a passport once and they were really lovely about it and put a note on my file and got printed and sent almost immediately after whatever they did. The team aren't faceless robots and do try to help when they can.

ICouldBeVioletSky · 20/07/2024 21:28

See also screenshot from application process.

would love to be proved wrong!

@Nottogetapenny The address you give for Peterborough passport office is incorrect. I don't know about any other passport offices. I get the impression that where you have copied that information from may not have been a gov.uk website.

The correct address is:

Quay House, 2 East Station Road,
Peterborough,
PE2 8YY

The address you give, they moved out of over a year ago.

Also, I can find no government website which says:

"Renew or amend a child passport £106.50"

This appears to be from that same, inaccurate, website that you quoted the passport office addresses from.

ICouldBeVioletSky · 20/07/2024 21:30

Yep that’s not an official government site. Apart from anything else they’ve got the fees all wrong.

ShoesEverywhere · 20/07/2024 21:32

I went on last Thursday to get a fast track adult one, arrived this morning. If your postman comes early and your flight is late and you can get an appointment on Monday, I'd risk that..

ebadame · 20/07/2024 21:32

stop quoting non government websites. This is basic "how to use the internet"

curlyrebel · 20/07/2024 21:34

I had this recently with my sons passport but it hadn't expired. It was 3 days out of the validity from when we were planning to leave. It was our fault for not checking properly sooner but one week before our flight we realised.

As it's a child, you definitely cannot get it same day (to avoid abduction etc). We applied for a weeks fast track exactly one week before our flight. Got an appointment at the office the next day. They said it could come sooner than 7 days and it would come out by special courier. They were wrong with both.

Up until the day I hoped it might come last minute (it was a bank holiday we were flying out). But it didn't so my DH and DD flew without us. I stayed behind with DS. The passport didn't come till the Wednesday after we'd applied - so 8 days from visit to the passport office. They said because of the bank holiday it was longer!

So we didn't fly out till the Thursday morning. Lost out on our original flights. It's pretty crap but that may be your best option if you're going for 2 weeks. Otherwise try and move your holiday. Sorry, not good news but better to be prepared for the worst case 😕

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/07/2024 21:34

Can you pay a penalty to move the holiday to say the end of August? If I had to I’d move th holiday to September, forget the school issue this once.

alexdgr8 · 20/07/2024 21:35

? leave her with granny ?
the rest of you can go.
how old is she.
you can make it up to her later.
better than everyone losing out.
and the money wasted.

That is an awful way to treat her. If she were a stepchild not going there'd be outcry.

Good luck OP. I really want this to work out for you.

Notchangingnameagain · 20/07/2024 21:49

You CAN book a same day appointment for children as long as BOTH parents attend the appointment. The passport website will tell you this.

Franklyyes · 20/07/2024 21:50

My partner had the 10 year issue which we didn’t discover until 2 days before. You need to get a photo from a booth that gives a code - we had a local Asda - then apply online with the photo link. You can’t get an appointment until you have photo. How far away are u from passport office? Luckily we were 30 mins away - Newport and it was very quick. You can do it and possibly arrange a later flight - take it step by step and see what you can do - good luck
