Desperate help - passport expired, travel on Wednesday

Nowanextraone · 20/07/2024 19:10

I feel sick. I don't understand how we have overlooked this as we renewed 2 of our other children's passports, but we've just seen our daughter's passport expired in January.

We are fucked aren't we? It says a child's passport can only be renewed urgently in a week.
I feel sick

Insurance won't even pay will it as it's our fault.

My dd recently got a new passport from Liverpool on a 7 day fast track. It was her first adult passport and you can’t do on the day passports for this. Appointment on Wednesday. Passport delivered on Friday. I wrote this on a recent thread and lots of people had the 2 day turnaround.

What time to you need to leave Wednesday? When I spoke to the passport office, they said if it had been a child renewal I could have got it quicker than the 7 day. But having tried to apply for a renewal child passport on the website, it only gave me the 7 day option and there are appointments on Monday. Please be aware if you call them, they are unable to book an appointment. You have to do this online.

When we renewed our children’s passport it was delivered by post next day. It was not peak holiday season but you have to renew it anyway so just keep trying.

I had a situation like this with my daughters passport albeit in 2022 - I got an in-person appointment on the 3rd and it was delivered to my home on the 7th - if you get a similar turnaround you might only miss a day or 2 of holiday.

Yes, don't think that all is lost, get onto it and see what you can do. Amend holiday/fast track etc.

Moirarosesgarden · 20/07/2024 19:42

Apologies just realised my link was not official but the list of offices is I think as is the phone number and didn’t see anything alluding to paying on that site itself. Hope you sort it.

dementedpixie · 20/07/2024 19:46

Can only get an adult renewal in the 1 day service. There's been a couple of threads recently about child 7 day renewals. Seem to take 7 or 8 days to receive them

Get the first appointment you can even if you have to drive up North or fly to Belfast. Apparently you can beg on the day and ask them to expedite it and you may get lucky.

Goslingsforlife · 20/07/2024 19:13

can you push the holiday back? Otherwise one parent stays behind and flies out later.

This

CountessWindyBottom · 20/07/2024 19:54

I get that you're upset @Nowanextraone but you're in a great position insofar as your child has an existing passport. And these things can be expedited. I'd email/tweet and do everything you can to have it all processed on Monday, which is more than possible.

I found myself in the same situation and the people in the passport office couldn't have been nicer. Was even given the direct line of the person responsible. (Although I'm not in the UK and things tend to run a little differently here).

All is not lost. so in the nicest possible way, pull up your big girl pants and know that you can actually make it happen!

Have a wonderful holiday!

Could a family member look after her? Not ideal, but could be a workaround.
Can you amend the holiday/flight booking?

You can't do that!!! Poor kid

How exactly?!

Sunnydiary · 20/07/2024 19:57

How long were you going for?

I think it’s safest to plan for one parent to fly out with the other DC and one stay until PP arrives and buy new flights then.

Expensive but worth it if you’re not just going for a few days. Good luck.

Bribery?

Joddlebod · 20/07/2024 20:00

This happened to us recently. I went to the passport office on a Thursday and the passport arrived by Saturday on the 1 week service. See if you can get an appointment tomorrow? I reckon it might just arrive on time.

Croufer · 20/07/2024 19:18

Really? Why on Earth why?

I believe it's to try and reduce the risk of children being taken abroad in custody disputes and other times that might not be safe for the child

Unicorntearsofgin · 20/07/2024 20:02

Worst comes to worst could you sell the holiday on? I think name changes are around £200

If you're not in the UK it's probably best people don't rely on your advice

Matronic6 · 20/07/2024 20:11

We had to get an urgent one for our daughter as the one we applied for 3.5 months earlier didn't arrive. So to hedge our bets we applied for the urgent one, for the first appointment we could on a Tuesday, it arrived on the Friday. The one we originally applied for arrived on the Saturday. 🙄

Kitkat1523 · 20/07/2024 20:12

You DP can fly out with the other 2 as planned…you and Dd as soon as you can

Floppyelf · 20/07/2024 20:13

Croufer · 20/07/2024 19:18

Really? Why on Earth why?

Its to precent kidnapping by one parent. Its a systemic delay that works in the police/child's interest.

Pussygaloregalapagos · 20/07/2024 20:16
  1. Try to get the passport asap
  2. Make arrangements for child to stay with family or friends incase it doesn’t arrive in time.
stressy though. Or as people have said. One parent take the other two and the other one stay back with her.
Chickdaft · 20/07/2024 20:18

Spoke to a woman in Turkey recently and the exact same happened to them. Hubby and the other two children flew out as planned and her little daughter and herself a few/or couple of days later. If your holiday is for two weeks and your budget allows then that’s your best bet?

Whatabouteryallaboutery · 20/07/2024 20:22

I was told this piece of advice by a friend who works in a consulate in Spain. They won't issue you with an emergency passport in the UK, because it's not an emergency - you're home. However, you don't need a passport to go to the Republic of Ireland, and the embassy there will issue an emergency passport because you're technically overseas. You can then use this to go on holiday and return home. However, I've never tested this myself and whether you want to go to the trouble of an unscheduled trip to Dublin before Wednesday to see if this works, I don't know...

bridgetreilly · 20/07/2024 20:26

People keep saying to call the passport office tomorrow, but surely they don’t work on Sundays? Good luck, OP, but I really think your chances of getting it in time to fly on Wednesday are very low.
