DH, Anita Rani and the see thru dress

Going to a ball soon, and I want to wear something lovely, also fashionable.

I was looking at more transparent dresses, as they seem to be in and I definitely have the figure for this. I am 46.

DH said it's all inappropriate. He's never really been fussy about me looking sexy before, he has always liked me to look classy, I call it Princess of Wales style.

So I said, what about Anita Rani, she is my age and looked amazing. "Let's see" he said, "I have always thought she is beautiful". So he looks at the photo for a while, says nothing about her, but says I should not wear something like that as it would be sad.

So, AIBU, or do you need a divorce like Anita to wear what you want at 46?
She has credited her divorce as the catalyst for wearing this, and I think she looks amazing frankly!

She looks ridiculous, might as well go out in knickers and bra.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 15/06/2024 06:43

I hope your joking, hard to tell at times. The dress is inappropriate for most situations regardless of age.
I can not think of one occasion where this works, not even pool side.

Snooglequack · 15/06/2024 06:44

She looks like she's off to join gymnastics club.

fieldsofbutterflies · 15/06/2024 06:45

Are you being serious? 😬

You can't genuinely be thinking about wearing something like that to a ball?

DustyLee123 · 15/06/2024 06:45

Just go in a swimming cossie with an old net curtain over the top. Classy.

Commonsense22 · 15/06/2024 06:45

I think I am with your dh on this. It's not about whether you'd look good or not, I am sure you would.

Red carpet dresses are designed to be attention-grabbing and very often provocative. The aim is for the celebrity to end up in s many magazines and on websites as possible, be talked about and remembered even if not all of it is flattering.

Is that what you want? Since your dh will be drawn into the limelight whether he wants it or not if you wear that dress, I understand he feels he deserved a right of veto.

AthenaBasil · 15/06/2024 06:46

While she has a nice figure I don’t think that’s a good look. I’d feel so awkward standing next to someone showing off so much. It’s very easy for that to look trashy.

babyproblems · 15/06/2024 06:46

I think she does look ok- but that sort of dress is incredibly unflattering and I would look for something a bit more classy tbh x

AnnaMagnani · 15/06/2024 06:47

As someone who doesn't go to any balls, is this a ball outfit or a celeb on a red carpet outfit?

Because to my mind they are too very different things. Wearing this on a red carpet is a quick and easy way of ensuring you have a lot of press coverage.

At a ball I'd want to look stylish more than just attention grabbing.

WilliamButt · 15/06/2024 06:47

Just no. Not on any level.

DoreenonTill8 · 15/06/2024 06:47

The balls that I've been to have been military, charity or work. All of which have had dress codes and this outfit would not have met any!
What's the ball for?

This is exactly what it looks like 🤣

ManilowBarry · 15/06/2024 06:49

The ensemble makes her look cheap and tacky.

PCcrisps · 15/06/2024 06:49

This is a wind up surely. Most of what the celebs wear on the red carpet woukd be wildly out of place at anything "normal"

I don't thinknshe does look that great, there are certainly loads of dresses that would have served her better. You DH is trying to save you from yourself. if this is true

betterangels · 15/06/2024 06:49

You're not serious, right?

PrettySenior · 15/06/2024 06:49

I would be embarrassed to accompany a friend wearing a dress like this to a ball, so I'm with your DH on this one. Also finding it hard to tell whether this is a joke post.

susey · 15/06/2024 06:49

Obviously she can wear what she wants, good for her, etc but I also genuinely don't like that style of outfit on anyone! I don't think it's mega flattering or suitable for a ball.

Sexier but classier (you say you have a good figure) is bodycon.

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 15/06/2024 06:50

What a funny thread, see through ball gowns and husbands who know who Anita Rani is, you have a very different live to mine 😂

Blackboxbetty · 15/06/2024 06:50

Nope. It's not your age, or your figure, it's the sheer - literally- attention seeking of it.

cryinglaughing · 15/06/2024 06:50

Big fat no from me.
Its a bloody awful look even if you have the figure for it.

MiddleParking · 15/06/2024 06:51

By amazing do you mean thin? Because that’s the only saving grace of her outfit. Even her hair isn’t done nicely.

I wouldn’t be dressing like the princess of wales either mind. Those are not the only options.

Edited

the ho Anita Rani
That's a bit mean.

SpringerFall · 15/06/2024 06:52

I don't care age, shape, height, sex, material or anything it does not look on anyone

Same as dental floss bikinis and lots of other attention seeking items

But sure if someone genuinely really wants it then sure go for it

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 15/06/2024 06:52

Unless you don't know what a ball is, this is definitely a wind-up.

It seems like you're just wanting people to slag off a celeb.

Hallamlass · 15/06/2024 06:53

It's not a dress for a ball really. The top part is ok, I think the bottom half looks a bit weird, maybe it's those big pants? She's a very attractive woman, she would look good in most things, though.
