DH, Anita Rani and the see thru dress

Going to a ball soon, and I want to wear something lovely, also fashionable.

I was looking at more transparent dresses, as they seem to be in and I definitely have the figure for this. I am 46.

DH said it's all inappropriate. He's never really been fussy about me looking sexy before, he has always liked me to look classy, I call it Princess of Wales style.

So I said, what about Anita Rani, she is my age and looked amazing. "Let's see" he said, "I have always thought she is beautiful". So he looks at the photo for a while, says nothing about her, but says I should not wear something like that as it would be sad.

So, AIBU, or do you need a divorce like Anita to wear what you want at 46?
She has credited her divorce as the catalyst for wearing this, and I think she looks amazing frankly!

It's horrible.

WonderingWanda · 15/06/2024 07:38

That's a hideous dress and does not make her look good. You would look like an attention seeking wally if you wore that or somethint equally transparent to a ball.

FFSWherearemyglasses · 15/06/2024 07:41

Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should.
Fabulous figure or not.
Dress classy not trashy 🥴

Sometimes I read a thread and find myself wondering if the OP is actively trying to get into the Daily Mail.

This dress was linked on a style thread earlier. Sheer but a bit more elegant. It seems to have a mini skirt fitted under and I assume the bra is lined but the torso is sheer. Perhaps you can find something nicer than the swimsuit dress with still a bit of sheer fabric.

It's a school ball, at a private school to boot, and amongst the most expensive in the country. There will be glamour.

The fact that this is a school ball makes this even more inappropriate!

Transparent dresses are not glamorous!

That’s OK then….. Crack on and wear it 🥴🙄

PonyPatter44 · 15/06/2024 07:51

Jesus, that pink tulle monstrosity looks like something Barbara Cartland would wear. It's equally as awful as the beige see-through dress.

Don't people wear non-ugly dresses any more? Tbf I haven't been to a ball for years, as I don't live that kind of lifestyle anymore, and the last few I went to were rugby club and farmers type things, so perhaps a different crowd.

Then definitely do NOT wear that or anything like that! Your poor child would never EVER live it down.

I'm usually very much for women should wear what they like when they like. But no one that isn't an attention hungry celebrity on a red carpet should go out in public wearing something quite so, erm, not there. I'm with your husband on this one, it would be a bit sad to rock up to school in that!

There are sheer evening dresses that look great. And there're others that look not so great.
I give you two examples from the Princess of Wales.

what a shame she feels like she has to cover up her natural self with that shit smeared all over her face so we can't see her natural features. She must have some serious self esteem issues

vincettenoir · 15/06/2024 07:53

She’s a beautiful woman and looks great but I don’t think much of the dress.

Not in that dress

Copperoliverbear · 15/06/2024 07:53

She might have a nice figure but the dress is awful, she might as well have no clothes on and just because stars are wearing inappropriate clothes, because they see them fashion week, it doesn't mean we have to copy them and also look stupid.

lapelouseestaurepose · 15/06/2024 07:55

AlbertVille · 15/06/2024 07:06

I don’t think the dress is nearly as bad as is being made out and Anita is beautiful.

But it is also clear to me that if you have a figure similar to her’s that you can do a lot better. (Diana’s Revenge Dress as an example is classy, was considered a bit daring at the time, and is also sexy)

She was also much younger than 46 when she wore it

Mayorq · 15/06/2024 07:55

"Let's see" he said, "I have always thought she is beautiful"

Your husband needs a better script writer

luckylavender · 15/06/2024 07:55

It's quite vulgar in my opinion

I knew it would be a private school ball.
If this is real, which I doubt, you will make yourself look like an absolute idiot if you turn up like that. And you will make the rest of your child's school years awful.

I hope you are at the one I am going to in a couple of week's time.

Livelaughlurgy · 15/06/2024 07:55

I think gowns fit into three catagories, ball, bridesmaid and red carpet and you don't want to confuse the three. That dress is a look at me dress. So if that's the vibe you want to give off at the school ball go for it. Personally I'd like to look great and feel great but wouldn't like look at me to be the goal. Unless the ball is a magazine style awards and has red carpet- then you can.

AgnesX · 15/06/2024 07:56

I think Anita is extremely good looking and is an excellent presenter. The dress looks like it has
a swimsuit underneath and isn't that attractive really.

It would have to be quite an event for someone not in the public eye to wear.

Yep, and this isn't glamour.

I doubt you'd even be allowed in, in all honesty.

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 15/06/2024 07:58

If you've got the body for it, fucking wear it. Some of the transparent dresses are lovely. That isn't one of them.
