Boyfriend’s bizarre underwear routine?

Snickerdoodle55 · 04/06/2024 09:42

I recently moved in with BF. I have since discovered that he only changes his underwear after he showers in the evening and doesn’t replace them with a new pair each morning after sleeping in them. I think this is very strange and that each time you get dressed for the day you should change your underwear.

I haven’t lived with a man for a long time so I guess I could be unreasonable to think this way?

YABU - he is still changing them daily so no issue

YANBU - he should change them when getting dressed in the morning

So... The morning showerers do what? Shower in the morning, then work all day/do other activities and go to bed without a shower after all days work? In summer too? I find that much MUCH weirder (and much more gross).

As for underwear, I really struggle to understand what on earth is going on with people's undercrackers when they sleep? Like ok, I'm an evening showerer like OP's BF, so brush teeth, cleanse face, shower, deodorant on, undies on (I sleep in underwear, always did and will continue to do so), go to bed. Sleep 6 hours (always do) in a clean bed. I don't shit my pants, don't piss them and don't sweat excessively. So what in the fresh hell happens to my knicks during those 6 hours of lying still in bed that's SO HORRIBLE, gross and so minging?

Deodorant to go to bed? That’s something I’ve never heard of.

I shower in the evening then clean knickers on and I sleep in knickers and a big tee shirt. Can't imagine getting into bed dirty.
I don't shower in the morning as showers make me feel light headed first thing. I sometimes put on clean underwear in a morning, sometimes I don't.

I can’t imagine not showering in the morning, don’t people wake up feeling a bit sweaty ! Plus my hair would be a right mess, it’s very fine and sticks out all over the place . No knickers in bed, clean in morning after shower

Shizzlestix · 04/06/2024 19:39

I have a bath in the evening and put on clean knickers that then stay on until the next night. I can't sleep naked, strikes me as a bit unhygienic. If I don't have a bath, I change my knickers in the morning. 🤷

Revelatio · 04/06/2024 09:44

What’s the alternative? Changing underwear twice a day? I change after a shower, but I shower in the morning. If I have two showers then I would change at night too.

Gross. You should have a shower before you go to bed and if you don’t then you should at least change your underwear.

Yellowhammer09 · 04/06/2024 10:13

My DH does this. Showers in the evening, changes into his underwear and that's it for 24hrs. I found it unusual but he doesn't smell 🤷‍♀️

I bet you I would be able to smell the both of you

Alwaysgothiccups · 04/06/2024 19:44

Seems a wierd way round to do things.. but thinking about it it's not much different in principle to what I do. I put on fresh underwear after a shower in the morning..
I do sometimes sleep in the underwear I've had on during the day.. though not if it's been really hot or I've been exercising.
But I suppose that's the same as only showering in the evening then changing underwear then..
Altho I'd prefer to have the fresh underwear on at the beginning of the day.. I suppose its the same amount of time to have underwear on

Its not getting an airing if you've got fabric directly next to it I.e pants

It's not getting airing under a duvet

Can't imagine sleeping with no knickers, given sheets aren't replaced everyday. Also can't imagine going to bed without a shower, you get far dirtier in the daytime that you do at night. Why would you wake up sweaty? (unless menopausal obviously, but I'm on HRT, so not an issue). I would have a quick shower after sex, so even then I wouldn't need a morning shower.
I dampen down and scrunch my hair in the morning.

mightymam · 04/06/2024 19:59

Unless he's shitting himself in the night I fail to see a problem with this?

If he's having a shower last thing at night, then putting on a clean pair of pants, surely his arse and pants are clean for the next day?!

Because I get hot in bed despite windows open all year round and a 2.5 tog duvet! Always have , I knew menopause would be mentioned !
Fine hair doesn’t need damping down, it goes completely flat with bits sticking out at odd angles !

Sue152 · 04/06/2024 20:10

This thread is peak MN surely?

Personally I think it's gross to not wear pants to bed. I mean what do you do when you're on your period? Surely you wear pants to bed then?

I change my pants every morning but i couldn't get that upset if someone did it every evening instead - I don't shower every day though, so i am literally the worst of the worst on MN 😁I'll take it though as all the money I save in water and electricity bills i spend on going on holiday several times a year.

Well yes, obviously then I did ! But I prefer air around my bits , and anyway I can’t see how they’re directly in contact with my sheets !

Honestly, yes. Unless I have been particularly active, I don't shower at night. I don't feel particularly dirty, either, maybe because most of my working day is spent hunched over a computer.

Your keyboard is probably a far bigger health concern than your unshowered body!
[waits for the MN collective to remind me I should be sanitising my hands and keyboard every time I step away to make a cup of tea or heaven forbid, dead head a flower]

How is he unclean for not changing his underwear again after putting clean boxers on after showering the night before? Only on mumsnet is this seen as unhygienic and weird 🙄 The man is showering EVERY evening and changing his boxers EVERYDAY. Yep proper trampy behaviour 🤣

This!

Shan5474 · 04/06/2024 21:41

I’d rather sleep next to man in fresh knick knacks than one with unwashed pits from the day 😛

Rewis · 04/06/2024 21:49

I had football today so just had a shower. First one of the week. Previously i would have put on fresh underwear. But since sleeping with underwear is weird and I can't bother doing laundry that often, so I'm not gonna change underwear every 12h. So I guess it is time to winnie the pooh. I'm sure the neighbours appreciate the basic instict on the balcony 😁

SoupChicken · 04/06/2024 22:10

I think it’s a bit grotty, people always smell (even if you think you don’t) after they’ve been asleep all night, and the clothes smell a bit too, I’d prefer a morning shower and clean underwear in the morning.

Wittyname10 · 04/06/2024 22:30

I’m weird with underwear.

I always change in to fresh underwear after a shower. If it’s evening shower after a gym/run/grubby day then they go in the laundry.

If it’s been a non-sweaty day I would shower, probably put pjs/no underwear on and then use them the next day for run/gym and change into a clean pair after that.

If I shower in the morning though - this is really interesting stuff - I’d sometimes leave the worn but clean pair out, change for a run or gym, shower, then back on the go the cleaner pair.

Weird eh?

Similar protocol with socks.

God it’s complicated sometimes.

bungaloid · 04/06/2024 22:33

Reckon I could go years in the same pants if I had to. This evening shower / pants routine actually seems pretty logical. I would expect to incur less sweat / grime during sleep than during normal working day, so makes more sense this way around if you are only allowed to change pants every 24 hours.

Metrictum · 04/06/2024 22:38

Yuck. These threads always make me feel grubby and the people who come on with all the ‘natural oils and odour are all perfectly fine and I only bathe weekly’ just make my skin crawl.

I examine people at work (healthcare) and people are surprisingly grubby given majority have access to washing facilities- dirty smelly feet, sweaty armpits, bits of loo roll in bum cheeks and worse.

We all shower in the morning and wear clean pants, shower again and change pants if exercise in the day, shower and clean PJs for bedtime. Each shower is only a few minutes and allows washing all the vital areas so it’s hardly a drama.

How anyone can get into bed when they have walked around barefoot or been for a poo etc and not had a wash before bedtime is quite honestly beyond me. I would feel horrible.

Do you think maybe your job might be be influencing how you feel?
I'm pretty sure most people don't shower according to their poo schedule.
What if you shower after the gym, eat dinner, have a poo - do you then shower again?

I don't think we'd be able to keep up with the number of dry towels needed, and we are just a family of 2 or 3 (depending on what adult son is doing). We do quite a bit of sport.
