To think that smoking weed outside in the summer is anti social

My neighbours are a couple in their late 50s, we get on ok but there's no love lost there- they complain about everyone else all of the time but never do wrong themselves.

Over the last 2 years they've developed a weed habit (it's medicinal apparently) and now the sun is out they seem to take turns chain smoking weed so our garden smells almost constantly of weed. If we leave the windows open it makes our house smell of it too so when they light up we have to close the windows.

Our gardens are narrow terraced gardens so we can't escape it. Aibu to think that constantly smoking weed in the summer when people around you want to use their gardens is anti social?

YANBU I can't stand that smell, find it massively triggering. I don't know how you go about approaching the issue apart from speaking to them or phoning Police.

Beatrixslobber · 11/05/2024 10:54

Smoking anything is antisocial. I prefer the smell of weed to the smell of cigarettes tbh!

Living with neighbours is hard especially in the summer- bbqs, lawnmowers, children playing, music etc. BUT it’s part of living in built up areas. This is why I live away from people, the only smells we get are from the cows. 😂

CruCru · 11/05/2024 10:56

There’s a weird attitude to weed in the UK. People act as though it has been decriminalised (probably because it has in parts of the US) but here it is class B (one rung down from cocaine and heroin). It really shouldn’t be considered a socially acceptable drug.

I would say to report them to the police but I am sure that they have the wit to not have too much of it at any one time … they’ll leave the “intention to supply” charge to the kid on a scooter who supplies them.

TunnocksOrDeath · 11/05/2024 11:02

You are absolutely not being unreasonable, you need to find a way to ask them to stop. When we live in a block of flats I used to just say the smoke was blowing in to the baby's room through the open window, and tbf, most people were decent enough to bugger off and smoke somewhere else.

Faduckssake · 11/05/2024 11:03

I hate that smell, it makes me gag. It seems to be everywhere these days, I can even smell it from inside my car just driving through some places.

Faduckssake · 11/05/2024 11:04

I'd have a word with your neighbour and ask them nicely first. Then report them if they were anything other than polite and considerate in their response.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/05/2024 11:04

No worse that regular smoking, loud music or the dog having a clear out.

Wouldn’t actually bother me. Weed smells much nicer than regular smoking/vaping.

shockeditellyou · 11/05/2024 11:05

It’s horrific and I hate the way it’s become normalised. YANBU!

Mrsjayy · 11/05/2024 11:06

It absolutely stinks and its every where, its lovely here today so of course my house will stink very soon.once my smoking neighbours come home.

You are kidding! The smell of weed is utterly vile, it makes me feel ill and it seems to be everywhere nowadays. It's far worse than just tobacco.

I agree with PP who can't understand why a Class B drug is so tolerated as though it's fine for folks to do this. It's disgusting and horribly anti social. I wish they would prosecute people who are doing this.

TeenLifeMum · 11/05/2024 11:07

I hate the smell. Vancouver absolutely stank when I ran along the beach, everyone on blankets on the grass after work stinking of weed. I really worry about the link to mh issues and long term impact but that’s generally ignored because it’s “cool”. I don’t get why smelling bad and filling lungs with smoke is cool… never understood it.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/05/2024 11:11

I’m not kidding.

Tobacco smells a lot worse. It makes me gag. Especially when people have the stale smell on their clothes.

Weed is far mellower.

We will have to agree to disagree then. I think a lot of people find the smell of weed vile, rather than 'mellow'. It's a really distinctive smell. Perhaps it depends on exactly what it is people are smoking.

Round here it is horrible.

wellington77 · 11/05/2024 11:17

My neighbours do that but all year round, absolutely stinks! Anyone know if the police would actually do anything to stop them smoking in the garden or is there no point?

Hereyoume · 11/05/2024 11:19

Absutely.

It stinks.

potatowine · 11/05/2024 11:20

Cigarettes, loud music and alcohol fuelled rowdiness are far worse but that’s just my opinion.
People listening to loud videos on their phones is the height of rudeness and shows a huge lack of consideration for others.Thats become normalised too now.

You could politely tell your neighbours that their smoke is a nuisance but I doubt reporting them to the police will make any difference.

Unless you have a weed factory it seems to be accepted these days.

Mrsjayy · 11/05/2024 11:21

Stale weed smells just as bad as cigarettea tbf sit next to a weed smoker on a bus and it really is horrible . I get if you are a smoker can't smell it but it's not great.

TinyYellow · 11/05/2024 11:22

If you live in a terraced house with small gardens that are practically on top of each other, you just need to accept that you live close to other people and have to put up with them.

personally I hate barbecue smells, but if other people want barbecues, good luck to them.

I think the police have more important things to worry about.

OneTC · 11/05/2024 11:23

I find it interesting that how you feel about something seems to change how you smell it, it smells similar to coffee, garlic and hops for me. Strong but not offensive.

I'd ask your neighbours for a resolution, it might just be forthcoming

Trycod · 11/05/2024 11:24

i usually walk my dog along the Thames at night but for the past few summers I haven’t been able to due to the stench of weed.

Weed is not as innocuous as some would have you believe. Smoking when the brain is still developing is damn right dangerous.

About 25-30 years ago they just came and asked us to keep the curtains closed so the person opposite would stop complaining

Trycod · 11/05/2024 11:25

My BO smells like weed when I water fast.

Riversideandrelax · 11/05/2024 11:25

I hate the smell of weed too. It is so much stronger than tobacco which I can't smell atall when my neighbours are smoking a cigarette. Vape also dissipates really quickly so no issue there either.

AliceCallous · 11/05/2024 11:27

I don't mind it myself. Whereas cigarette smoke is disgusting to me. I significantly prefer both to loud music, which I would have agreed without question was antisocial.

It does have medicinal purposes so I wouldn't be so quick to write that off either just because you don't like it.
