To think that smoking weed outside in the summer is anti social

My neighbours are a couple in their late 50s, we get on ok but there's no love lost there- they complain about everyone else all of the time but never do wrong themselves.

Over the last 2 years they've developed a weed habit (it's medicinal apparently) and now the sun is out they seem to take turns chain smoking weed so our garden smells almost constantly of weed. If we leave the windows open it makes our house smell of it too so when they light up we have to close the windows.

Our gardens are narrow terraced gardens so we can't escape it. Aibu to think that constantly smoking weed in the summer when people around you want to use their gardens is anti social?

Meh, what are you gonna do? You could ask them to stop but if they don’t, they don’t.
We all have to rub along together in this world. I’m sure you have some habits that wind other people up too. Just crack on.

I don’t smoke weed but I don’t mind the smell of it. Reminds of when I was a teenager. I think some of the replies here are a bit dramatic tbh.

I find it interesting that how you feel about something seems to change how you smell it, it smells similar to coffee, garlic and hops for me. Strong but not offensive.

I'd ask your neighbours for a resolution, it might just be forthcoming

I do think we smell things differently but not sure how much it is linked to how you feel about it.

I don't find garlic a strong smell and I really like it.
Coffee is strong to me and I also like it.
Weed I find strong and offensive and while I'm not keen on it for me and mine, I couldn't care less about the neighbour smoking except for the horrible smell!

XMissPlacedX · 11/05/2024 11:36

As other posters have said, some people see garlic, coffee, cigarettes etc as strong intrusive smells. We have been taught that weed is bad so you have learnt to associate it with 'a bad smell', it's just a grown plant ( just like garlic), nothing offensive about it unless abused.

I'm slightly biased though, as it's the only thing that has ever worked for my grandfather. He is a painter and developed Parkinson's and had to stop painting. He took up smoking weed at 81 and can now paint again.

TimWhoretons · 11/05/2024 11:37

Prefer stoners to drunks.

Weed is legal in the UK with a prescription. Clinics like Curaleaf will prescribe after an online consultation and the eligibility criteria is long and open to interpretation. They do stipulate that patients are not to smoke joints but should dry vape instead that reduces the smell. I know 3 people that use Curaleaf and they all smoke it in joints. It's going to become far more common in the UK.

Anameisaname · 11/05/2024 11:49

To be honest I find smoking of any description in narrow terraced house gardens unacceptable. I've got neighbours who smoke both. It's really annoying but not much I can do

There’s a weird attitude to weed in the UK. People act as though it has been decriminalised (probably because it has in parts of the US) but here it is class B (one rung down from cocaine and heroin). It really shouldn’t be considered a socially acceptable drug.

I would say to report them to the police but I am sure that they have the wit to not have too much of it at any one time … they’ll leave the “intention to supply” charge to the kid on a scooter who supplies them.

'only one rung down' - to make it sound like there are lots of rungs. Equally it is only one rung above prescription medicines that people take daily for their entire lives in many instances.

It also only got changed to class b to satisfy the political dialogue at the time - and was done so against the advice of the advisory Council set up to provide an evidenced based recommendation.

It was recognised as a meaningless policy at the time and those that suggested it are on public record recognising it as a mistake. It was to appease a small section of right wing daily mail fanatics who they were trying to enagage by looking interested in law and order, but changed nothing. It was the small boats of c.2007

I’m torn because people think cigarettes are something to put up with but weed is unacceptable. Both are a nuisance when it’s invading the personal space of your home, but at the same time the neighbours should be entitled to do what they want on their own property within reason - especially if it’s not recreational and is in fact medicinal.

You saying it’s medicinal but then also saying they’ve took up a ‘weed habit’, that’s not true is it if it’s used for medical purposes. I’m so tired of people treating weed as if it’s beneath them, when so many people use it for pain, neurological, sleep or even mental health purposes rather than recreational.

EmpressOfTheThread · 11/05/2024 12:01

I'd hate that. The smell is very pungent and very unpleasant. Medicinal my arse.
No wonder they're unpleasant neighbours, long term weed use can lead to paranoia, increased aggression and serious mental health problems. They're not some happy hippies chillin'.

Ezmaez · 11/05/2024 12:06

Coming from someone who has had to put up with neighbours from hell smoking weed indoors which in turn then stinks out my entire house YANBU. The smell is absolutely disgusting as are the attitudes of many (not all) weed smokers who clearly think it’s acceptable to smoke around others who don’t wish to inhale it.

'Can'. It can also lead to being able to function, being able to sleep, and being able to not be in crippling pain.

I sometimes smoke it for my arthritis. I'm sure you'd much prefer me to be lying awake in pain because my hips are too painful to lie on, but I guess it sucks to be you.

Ezmaez · 11/05/2024 12:13

I don’t know much about weed but for those saying they smoke it as it’s medicinal to say help with pain I believe you can get it prescribed from a GP in the form of a spray. You don’t have to smoke it and upset your neighbours. It’s just an excuse.

WaitingfortheTardis · 11/05/2024 12:14

Everyone says it's 'medicinal'. I thinks it's awful, the smell alone makes me feel sick.

It really can be medicinal, my wonderful grandfather who leads a very simple life had to give up painting when he got Parkinson's, he was so upset about this.

My cousin gave him a joint and about half an hour later his shakes calmed down. He can now paint again and only smokes it about half an hour before he wants to paint.

Some people do abuse it though and yes if your not using your brain it can lead to paranoia and other issues.

But I will always be great full for my grandfather being able to paint again and have been woken up to the medicinal purposes of it.

As much as I appreciate that, some people with a weed habit use the fact it can be used medicinally to justify their unhealthy use.

That's a specific combination that is targeted at a specific condition. You wouldn't get it prescribed for generalized pain. It's used to treat neuropathic pain associated with MS afaik

SauvignonBlonk · 11/05/2024 12:31

I’m with you OP. It stinks. We had a neighbour who smoked it non stop from 6.30am. There was no escaping it. He’s moved now thank goodness.

Thevelvelletes · 11/05/2024 12:31

Hashish smells so much nicer
Long time since I've had a smoke.
Hate the smell of weed... stinking stuff.

EmpressOfTheThread · 11/05/2024 12:31

Dear @XMissPlacedX - I'm glad that it's helping your lovely grandfather. Parkinson's is a very cruel illness x

It's very easy to get a private prescription for medicinal cannabis, therefore cannabis is (de facto) legal.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 11/05/2024 12:33

Smoking anything in close proximity to other people is selfish.

Thankyou so much, he drew all of his granddaughters a pencil drawing of a flower last year ( mine was a rose 🌹) I nearly cried when he gave it to me as it was still as good as his pictures before the Parkinson's. He was so proud giving them to us.

I am sorry to hear about your arthritis. I too am a sufferer and take prescription medication, but it can be very painful. I want to apologise if I caused upset. I feel strongly about weed for reasons I won't go into here.
However, you got quite unpleasant and offensive, and I don't think there was any need.
I wish you all the best x

RM2013 · 11/05/2024 12:35

I can’t stand it. Where we lived before the neighbours son used to do this all the time in the summer I hated it.

Boogiemam · 11/05/2024 12:36

We have these neighbours too. Except ours is a dealer who isn't as approachable as middle aged middle class people so asking them to be more considerate isn't a question he would respond to. We don't even get a break in the winter as they smoke so much inside the house it permeates through the floorboards and stinks out, mainly our toddlers room 😭 it used to be a beautiful place to live but his estate agent and landlord don't seem to care.

LittleCharlotte · 11/05/2024 12:37

I had this with an ex neighbour. I asked him to stop because his smoke was wafting in through my window and work do random drugs-tests including hair samples. This wasn't true but I wasn't going to put up with it. I would certainly have a word with them.
