To think that smoking weed outside in the summer is anti social

My neighbours are a couple in their late 50s, we get on ok but there's no love lost there- they complain about everyone else all of the time but never do wrong themselves.

Over the last 2 years they've developed a weed habit (it's medicinal apparently) and now the sun is out they seem to take turns chain smoking weed so our garden smells almost constantly of weed. If we leave the windows open it makes our house smell of it too so when they light up we have to close the windows.

Our gardens are narrow terraced gardens so we can't escape it. Aibu to think that constantly smoking weed in the summer when people around you want to use their gardens is anti social?

On my own here but I love the smell of weed 🤣

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 11/05/2024 17:17

I never smoke weed outside, it’s not something I want my neighbours to know about - they suffer under the delusion that I’m a respectable person.

I wouldn't have thought that 'medicinal marijuana' would be smoked, rather like methadone isn't injected.

They recommend vaping it

But it's still weed, so you can smoke it or eat it or anything else you can do with normal weed.

Has normally been irradiated though which kills bugs (and terps) and it tastes like shit. They're kind of more recently realising that the entourage effect of the terps is important to it's medical benefit though

It reeks. We always laugh at the ones walking through town at 9am sucking the life out of a joint. Tragic sad acts.

I was standing at a bus stop Wednesday morning and a guy was smoking it, they don't care about anybody else.

I smoke weed too, indoors.

I've always said that the growers have missed a trick: why don't they genetically modify the plant so it doesn't stink?

rainbowbee · 11/05/2024 17:38

I don't hate the smell and I don't disapprove of smoking it- however, there does seem to be a cross-section between weed-smokers and people who don't respect shared spaces. My downstairs neighbour smokes weed. He leaves the butts everywhere. Put them in a pot ffs. So yes, it's selfish.

Yellowhammer09 · 11/05/2024 17:39

My hose would be periodically shooting water over the fence. Whoops!

User1979289 · 11/05/2024 17:40

I smoke regular weed for pain relief. The medical stuff is absurdly expensive. I have a chronic pain condition and without it I have no option but opiate pain killers which fuck me up. I don't give a shit what anyone thinks and I have a very respectable job and am considered a pillar of the community 😂😂😂😂

The illegal cannabis farms are usually run by criminal gangs who exploit vulnerable people like illegal migrants and those with learning difficulties - the victims of modern slavery. The growers are in no position to genetically modify anything.

Someone upthread said that they expect cannabis to be legalised. I don’t - partly because there is a mental health crisis and no funding but mainly because there is no political appetite for doing so. However, even if it were legalised next week, someone buying illegal cannabis today is a criminal. They are not bothered about exploiting kids on scooters or poor souls who are starved and locked up to work on cannabis farms.

Most people buying shite from China don’t care about the Uyghurs who are starved and locked up to produce it, or about the women who work in clothing factories in unsafe conditions, being sexually assaulted and earning pence per hour, or the fact that the Aral Sea has all but dried up due to the demand for cotton.

Cherrysoup · 11/05/2024 19:06

Massively anti-social, I’m horrified that the new neighbour (who thinks he can do as he pleases, including damaging our property) is a weed smoker. My DH had to ask him to move off the entrance to our drive today by getting out of the car, I’m hoping he clocked the word ‘Police’ on my DH’s sleeve.

BrummieCahoots · 11/05/2024 19:08

I absolutely hate the smell of weed. But I live in Birmingham so it's everywhere! To be fair no one smokes it around my house / street but I'm always catching wafts of it when I go to work .. on the bus .. from cars .. I think normal cigarettes are fine compared to the rancid weed smell.

BrummieCahoots · 11/05/2024 19:11

Trycod · 11/05/2024 11:24

i usually walk my dog along the Thames at night but for the past few summers I haven’t been able to due to the stench of weed.

Weed is not as innocuous as some would have you believe. Smoking when the brain is still developing is damn right dangerous.

I agree . Weed is horrible . People think it's harmless. I don't agree.

I am not sure that I follow your logic. Do you mean that, as some foreign workers are treated badly, people should not mind that people in the UK are exploited as part of the cannabis industry?

I don’t think the existence of Shein means that middle class people buying cannabis are virtuous. They are still criminals.

Inspireme2 · 11/05/2024 19:59

Go over after the next time they smoke it and ask if they can do so elsewhere.
Offensive to us or not, they can be considerate, hopefully.

Angelsrose · 11/05/2024 20:13

Of course it's anti-social, discuss it with them and ask them to please stop. If they love it so much, they can smoke inside. It's illegal! Utterly selfish behaviour from your neighbours.

Just ensure you don't subject others to your smoke! Everyone can do as they like but keep it inside, no reason for neighbours to also inhale it.

I hope you don’t mind me asking you questions, but how do you find weed helping with pain in comparison to opioids? I’ve tried so many medication due to my pain and have been on constant doses of Dihydrocodeine daily, for years. I was thinking about cannabis as I know it’s a ‘natural’ form of pain relief and I wouldn’t have to take opioids anymore. I know someone who works for one of the medical cannabis companies who told me how much it costs and I was thinking how much more expensive it is than ‘the streets’. Baffling how they can charge that much knowing the people who will pay it often have no other option. Due to finances I would have to go the illegal route.

Sorry for another question, but how do you consume it? And do you get scared of getting caught due to it being illegal? I’m a bit of a worrier and would be scared of smoking it and getting arrested and my child being taken away by social services all over me smoking a bit of weed. I just really am considering it though as I’m in so much pain daily I barely can leave my home.

I know you quoted someone else but I use weed for pain relief and also have a prescription for 60 mg codeine up to 4x per day, so thought I’d chime in.

I’m really sorry you’re in so much pain. The analgesic effects are difficult to describe. For me, weed feels like my body becomes lighter and the pain sort of floats away. I might still be aware of it but it doesn’t bother me as much. So it’s similar to opiates in some senses, but the effect is almost instant after not very much. It also makes me feel deeply relaxed, and very in tune with the sensations in my body. You don’t get the side effects of opiates such as constipation, nausea and that awful intense itching.

I personally vape it, using PAX. It still smells but not anywhere near as much as smoking it, and it doesn’t linger like smoke either. I vape indoors. SS won’t take your kids away for vaping a bit of weed, they have way bigger things to worry about.

Weed is horrible. My next door but one neighbour is outside every two to three hours smoking a joint. Doesn’t matter so much in the winter but in the summer I want to open windows and back door and then my house bloody stinks of it too. Drives me insane that my kids bedrooms stink of his weed. Completely anti social and illegal but it’s treated as if it’s legal now. I constantly smell it when I’m out and about!

Edited

You CONSTANTLY smell of it because of your next door BUT ONE neighbour?

Come off it. Are you joined at their hip?

Willmafrockfit · 12/05/2024 07:27

These things don't happen because of cannabis they happen because cannabis is prohibited and that drives it into the hands of criminals.
Cannabis should be legal for recreational as well as medicinal use and available at a reasonable price, if that happened no one would need to buy it illegally.
Growing your own should also be legal, that way you can legally get it for free.

CruCru · 12/05/2024 12:28

I don't get how it can be ALL day, surely they couldn't afford to smoke it for 10 hours much less would they be able to form a sentence.

I took this to mean that whenever the OP has some leisure time and would like to enjoy her garden, her neighbours seem to be smoking cannabis. Presumably they don’t smoke all day because they’d be at work (or the OP is at work and doesn’t know whether or not they are smoking).
