To think that smoking weed outside in the summer is anti social

My neighbours are a couple in their late 50s, we get on ok but there's no love lost there- they complain about everyone else all of the time but never do wrong themselves.

Over the last 2 years they've developed a weed habit (it's medicinal apparently) and now the sun is out they seem to take turns chain smoking weed so our garden smells almost constantly of weed. If we leave the windows open it makes our house smell of it too so when they light up we have to close the windows.

Our gardens are narrow terraced gardens so we can't escape it. Aibu to think that constantly smoking weed in the summer when people around you want to use their gardens is anti social?

Thankyou so much, he drew all of his granddaughters a pencil drawing of a flower last year ( mine was a rose 🌹) I nearly cried when he gave it to me as it was still as good as his pictures before the Parkinson's. He was so proud giving them to us.

How lovely! I hope he has more comfort and respite in the days and months to come.

It's very easy to get a private prescription for medicinal cannabis, therefore cannabis is (de facto) legal.

Anyone smoking their "legal medication" is also breaking the law. Flower, when prescribed, should only be vaped and is illegal to smoke.

PontiacFirebird · 11/05/2024 12:39

Usually these days what people are calling “ weed” is skunk, and yes it smell absolutely disgusting ( and about 100 times stronger than fags) and will fuck you right up mentally.
It’s everywhere nowadays- I walk past people smoking it right in the city centre, so ageee people seem to think it’s legal now.
I would have to ask my neighbours to stop, it’s really antisocial.

My neighbours do that but all year round, absolutely stinks! Anyone know if the police would actually do anything to stop them smoking in the garden or is there no point?

I can pretty much guarantee the police won't be interested. I work with teenagers under 16 who regularly smoke weed, I've actually handed it over to the police before and they weren't remotely bothered.

Thank you for the heads up, sadly its too late, I can hear the sirens now, the old bill are on their way to arrest me😳😥

Only joking 🤠
Back in the day I used to enjoy a spliff but now I have some very sophisticated vaping equipment😘
Even so, inhaling anything isn't great for your lungs (I am a keen runner and I like to get up those hills🏃🏼‍♀️) so I use homemade edibles at least half of the time.
I find cannabis very helpful and enjoyable and great for sleep 😊😊😊💤

Vistada · 11/05/2024 12:51

Weed is a disgusting smell so i sympathise, but its such a fine line to tread when you're in a built up area

My neighbours smoke weed, I hate it. However, I have a dog with a loud bark, I play the radio and I smoke tobacco sometimes - so to keep the peace as I'm sure I'm not whiter than white I say nothing

GiacomettisCornetto · 11/05/2024 12:53

Less carcinogenic than a barbecue, quieter than EDM, less smelly than a bonfire. less damaging both on an individual and societal level than alcohol.

If I had a choice between partying pisshead neighbours with a fire pit and an addiction to barbecues and a quiet couple of stoners I'd choose the latter every time.

TwelveAngryWhiskers · 11/05/2024 12:54

YABU.

Lots of things are offensive and antisocial. Cigarettes. Music on speakers. Leaf blowers. BBQs. Bonfires. Nauseating food smells. There was a thread about perfume recently.

I vape it for pain relief. Mumsnet is very odd about weed. It reminds me of how people went mad policing the activities of others during lockdown. That because it hasn’t entirely been legalised yet, you’re BREAKING THE RULES and are demonised and shamed accordingly.

wheretoyougonow · 11/05/2024 12:59

Only on Mumsnet would the smell of weed get compared to the smell of coffee or garlic.

I get it op. It stinks but more than that it's forced into your personal space. I'm sure if we all went round spaying perfume by people smoking it they would soon complain of the smell always being in their space.

I find it interesting that how you feel about something seems to change how you smell it, it smells similar to coffee, garlic and hops for me. Strong but not offensive.

I'd ask your neighbours for a resolution, it might just be forthcoming

For me it has nothing to do with how I feel about it. I hated the smell for a long time before I even knew what it was. I used to smell what to me was a really vile odour every so often while. I smelt a bit like a vinegary, things rotting at the bottom of a bin smell so I assumed that was what it was, and that for some reason it smelt worse than usual. It was only when I smelt in while walking with my DP and he said "oh the lovely smell of weed", that I found out what the smell was. If I that hadn't happened i would still be assuming it was a bin /rubbish related smell.

Willmafrockfit · 11/05/2024 13:10

my neighbours smoke weed outside all year, i find it appalling

0sm0nthus · 11/05/2024 13:25

Mmmmmm, I LOVE the smell of cannabis😁
💚💛💚🧡💚💗💚

QueenMegan · 11/05/2024 13:30

Can you suggest they vape as its healthier isn't it....I don't know of I'm.correct there but surely smoking is very carcinogenic...cancelling out health benefits?
Just tell them it stinks to high heaven be blunt

LaCouleurDeMonCiel · 11/05/2024 13:31

No worse that regular smoking, loud music or the dog having a clear out
This!
Also, kids on trampolines, hot tubs, smoky bbqs, kids kicking balls, shrieking toddlers, drunk adults in the evening…

QueenMegan · 11/05/2024 13:31

Failing that gey a load of raw manure for your garden🤮

I am sorry that you need pain relief.

Cannabis hasn’t been legalised. It has been moved up the drug classifications from class C to class B. I do see that there are people on here who don’t like the law but it is the law in the UK. Should the police arrest someone for possession / possession with intent to supply, that the person arrested doesn’t like the law won’t be a good defence.

The people I feel sorry for are the kids on scooters who are supplying this stuff. They are not paid anything like enough to justify the risk of a possession with intent conviction.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/05/2024 11:11

I’m not kidding.

Tobacco smells a lot worse. It makes me gag. Especially when people have the stale smell on their clothes.

Weed is far mellower.

I disagree, weed stinks, it’s sour and horrible. I prefer cigarette smoke.

Twynklebell · 11/05/2024 13:47

Sorry to hear you're having this issue - I hate the smell of cigarettes but I find weed even worse and would be fuming if its impinging on my space all summer. I've always hated the smell even before I knew what it was. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if some people like it - its bloody unsocial to impose it on your neighbours throughout the summer. Even things like BBQ's or bonfires tend to be an occasional thing.

Try speaking to them first but if they ignore you, I'd be inclined to get your sprinklers going and make sure next door gets nicely wet. If they complain, say its dampning down the smell.

CruCru · 11/05/2024 13:47

One of the major causes of knife crime in London is the supply of drugs. This is a oldish article but it talks about the problem in my area of north London.

https://amp.theguardian.com/society/2019/mar/09/county-lines-drug-gangs-fuel-knife-crime-london-norfolk

This is why we need full legalization for cannabis, ie make it legal for recreational as well as medicinal use, take it out of the control of criminals✅

Disturbia81 · 11/05/2024 13:54

CruCru · 11/05/2024 10:56

There’s a weird attitude to weed in the UK. People act as though it has been decriminalised (probably because it has in parts of the US) but here it is class B (one rung down from cocaine and heroin). It really shouldn’t be considered a socially acceptable drug.

I would say to report them to the police but I am sure that they have the wit to not have too much of it at any one time … they’ll leave the “intention to supply” charge to the kid on a scooter who supplies them.

I think because police don't do anything about people smoking it
I don't mind people doing it in their homes, far far less harmful than alcohol. But don't want to smell it in my house and garden

QueenMegan · 11/05/2024 13:56

Absolutely agree it should be legalised and controlled too. The first thing they should do is add something to dampen the stink

ILikePistachios · 11/05/2024 14:00

I'm in the same situation unfortunately, neighbours are elderly and the husband smokes it for pain relief. Our whole house stinks if we leave the windows open, which this time of year we want them open 24/7. Unfortunately not found a solution

Abitboring · 11/05/2024 14:05

No, it's not good. The problem with weed also is that it lingers in rooms. I have the smell coming from my neighbour through the front door and then my bedroom just stinks although nobody has smoked in there. I find it so so inconsiderate.

I have suggested to them to use some device so the smell doesn't travel everywhere but I don't actually know if it exists.

ItsSerious · 11/05/2024 14:06

Smoking in general is anti-social. Our neighbour smokes in the garden and it comes into the house (and garden) whenever he does. It's disgusting. Humans are inconsiderate!
