I’ve just tried blue cheese and honey on toast and it’s so delicious it’s genuinely taken me aback. I had the same the first time I ever tried guacamole.

What foods have done the same for you. Not things that are tasty and you enjoy, but that you’ve tried for the first time and genuinely got a shock at how delicious they are?

Got to be chicken, honey, bacon and waffles - sounds rank but tastes lovely

Also haggis. Sounds weird but tastes gorgeous

keepingsanity · 28/04/2024 18:07

Ohh and Stilton on digestive biscuit is perfect

GoodVibesHere · 28/04/2024 18:09

Dates. They are so sticky and sweet, it's hard to believe something so natural is so delicious. I like them chopped on porridge.

Whitewatergrafting · 28/04/2024 18:10

Ricotta and honey on toast

Unleashthehordes · 28/04/2024 18:13

Just an observation but all of the examples are a sweet-salty combination (with the exception of your quac) so that’s interesting!

mine is salted dark chocolate
chicken & waffles with hot honey
Sharp cheddar and fig jam

naemates · 28/04/2024 18:36

Oysters, I was psyching myself up to just swallow it and get it over with, but it was the most delicious thing I've eaten

murasaki · 28/04/2024 18:38

Bacon and maple syrup. I scoffed at my Canadian relatives who I was staying with, but oh my god it was good

BananaLambo · 28/04/2024 18:40

Homemade honeycomb with homemade lemon tart. Also, the first time I had a strawberry was at my Irish uncle’s farm. We went into a field and picked it. It almost blew my head off it was so delicious. Tasted nothing like the ones we get today. The strawberry flavour was so sweet and intense.

Philadelphia light and Doritos hot salsa on ryvita.

Elsewhere123 · 28/04/2024 18:43

Tomato warm from my greenhouse, purple sprouting brocoli with unsalted butter.

Proper Thai larb about 20 years ago. Meat, red onion, chili, mint, even the ground up rice just makes it the most perfect texture and flavour combo. Served with very crunchy gem lettuce and cucumber. It’s also really good made with mushrooms 🍄

There's a salad they do in France, grilled goat cheese on toasted French bread with a tiny drop of honey on each piece (the cheese is in little rounds so it fits the bread) and the whole thing is on top of salad leaves dressed in olive oil. Also another French dish, carpaccio de boeuf which is very thinly sliced beef fillet, dressed with olive oil and lemon juice and topped with parmesan shavings. The beef is raw, except that the outside edges of it have been seared. Try it. Sounds scary, tastes like heaven. Another beef recipe, this one Italian, tagliata di manzo, which is thin strips of seared steak (I use rump steak, or you can use fillet) on a bed of rocket dressed with olive oil, with parmesan shavings and cherry tomatoes. Something completely different I ate recently, brill: it's a fish and it doesn't really taste fishy, it's more meaty. Lovely flavour but you need to go to a fishmonger for it. Beef stroganoff, google a recipe, beef and mushrooms in sour cream, it's totally mwah!

WatermelonWaveclub · 28/04/2024 18:45

Brie and cranberry sauce, stilton and pear, feta and watermelon (salty and sweet)
Also didn't expect to like it but...basil ice cream!

Raspberried · 28/04/2024 18:46

There's a strong cheese and honey theme here - for me warm feta in filo pastry drizzled with honey

EverybodyLTB · 28/04/2024 18:49

Lobster smothered in garlicky butter in the US. We had bibs on and still got in a state! I’d never had lobster before and loved the texture, sweetness, and I’m a sucker for garlic so just always sticks in my mind it’s such a good food memory. This is one of the reasons I love travel so much.

Dartmoorcheffy · 28/04/2024 18:50

Jersey royals, salted butter and cornish sea salt

Almost anything with smoked paprika

Octopus that I had in a restaurant by the harbour in lanzarote

Pecorino and truffle oil on macadamia nuts

EverybodyLTB · 28/04/2024 18:53

Finocchiona, grana padano, drizzle of honey. In Italy, on a terrace in Tuscany. The fennel in the finocchiona is just beautiful, and yes as pp said definitely a salty/sweet theme coming along here - maybe it’s the ultimate combo?

olivebranch31 · 28/04/2024 18:53

I think it's called feta me meli, feta baked in filo pastry drizzled in honey 🤤

EverybodyLTB · 28/04/2024 19:08

I’m ill in bed today and this thread has cheered me right up, I’m going to go again. A brown derby down the seafront as a kid, maybe 7 or 8. Clacton. I was just like WTF is this taste sensation? How can anything be this hot and cold and sweet and delicious? They hardly do them anywhere any more and I’ve even told the kids about the legend 😂 I’m always on the lookout. FYI a brown derby is a big fat hot donut, whippy ice cream, a flake, nuts and chocolate sauce. Probably not really a big deal in the current world of monster shakes and everything being available everywhere any time, but that was such a joyful treat.

Jayinthetub · 28/04/2024 19:27

Oyster and vinegar Kent crisps - had them on a ferry once and never found them again. Also Yorkshire puddings with golden syrup 😋

Greywitch2 · 28/04/2024 19:29

Fruit cake with cheese. Gorgeous.

Mumaway · 28/04/2024 19:32

Foie gras, slightly crisped on the outside, on top of a well aged rare steak. Please don't judge, it was a different time!
And baklava. Especially the little roll shaped ones with very smooth (maybe cashew?) ground nuts inside ...
Gulab Jamun, still slightly warm.

PrettySenior · 28/04/2024 19:34

Uni (sea urchin) sushi. Absolutely incredible. Followed by ikura (fish eggs) sushi.

NeedToChangeName · 28/04/2024 19:35

Dates stuffed with a mixture of cream cheese and honey. I had this recently. It blew my mind

Interesting how many suggestions involve (1) cheese and honey and / or (2) sweet and savoury

PonyPatter44 · 28/04/2024 19:35

Grilled halloumi drizzled with truffle honey. Literally the most incredible thing I've ever put in my mouth.
