I’ve just tried blue cheese and honey on toast and it’s so delicious it’s genuinely taken me aback. I had the same the first time I ever tried guacamole.

What foods have done the same for you. Not things that are tasty and you enjoy, but that you’ve tried for the first time and genuinely got a shock at how delicious they are?

fresh crab

WhamBamThankU · 28/04/2024 21:31

Toasted sourdough rubbed with a raw garlic clove followed by large vine ripened tomatoes, sprinkling of rock salt and pepper on top. A drizzle of olive oil to finish. Divine. I know there's a name for it but I'm currently just thinking what it tastes like 😅 I regularly have it for breakfast and warn colleagues how antisocial my breath will be so to stay away.

Jewelanemone · 28/04/2024 21:32

Another vote for feta baked in filo and drizzled with honey.
My mum lives in Crete and this is my favourite starter in my favourite restaurant where she lives 😋
Bacon rolls cooked and eaten at the beach after diving. Corn on the cob with salted butter. Crispy duck and hoisin sauce. Strong cheddar with crunchy bits, that makes your mouth water.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 28/04/2024 21:34

Homemade focaccia dipped in olive oil and Italian seasoning blend, with or without caramelised onions for that sweet/salty hit

BarrelOfOtters · 28/04/2024 21:35

A ripe home grown tomato with a bit of salt. It’s a different thing entirely to a refrigerated supermarket tomato.

JinxandBinx · 28/04/2024 21:36

I remember the first time I had a steak cooked medium rare. My dad only eats well done and I used to hate having beef Sunday dinner because the meat was so chewy. I then became obsessed with Gordon Ramsey and he has his beef medium rare, so I thought “If it’s good enough for Gordon…” Honestly life-changing, and I can make the perfect medium rare steak with an amazing blue cheese sauce

In Debenhams Canterbury the early 80,s I had a baked potato filled with chicken in a white sauce. It was absolutely delicious. I was about 12 and I still think about it. I don't know why it was so special, but it was just out of this world!

ilovepixie · 28/04/2024 21:39

Also as a child rhubarb eaten raw dipped in sugar fresh out of the garden. And scallions again picked fresh from the garden in bread and butter with a shake of salt.

A plate of small pieces of white stilton with ginger and apricot and chocolate buttons from the fridge, delicious.

Ooh great thread!
Pani puri- especially the tamarind sauce
This green mole dish I had during 'Mole festival' at Mestizo on Hampstead road in about 2012.
Vietnamese summer rolls.
The tofu larb they serve at Zaap thai in Leeds.
Dates!!!
When my friend at uni made cauliflower cheese with loads of blue cheese.
A roasted squash I had that had dark green skin and dark orange flesh and was so dense and smooth and buttery I couldn't stop eating it (approx 2008.)
Tiramisu 😁
An 'avocado dream' smoothie I had in las vegas in 2014.

I'm sure there's loads more that other people's ideas will remind me of!

^^ omg yes this! First proper well cooked steak. I was a bit young and as said above had been brought up on beige shit. I asked for my steak well done in a restaurant and, no joke, the guy said no and that the chef will refuse. He said it’s medium rare at the most, but I’m welcome to choose something else. I didn’t want to look like an uncultured swine, so went for it, medium rare steak with bearnaise sauce, and was introduced to a whole new world of taste and texture. I really fell in love with food from between the ages of about 15-19 and taught myself to cook well because of that love. My kids now have no idea what they’ve got going on, nutrients and flavour every day!

White truffle oil drizzled over a filling of parma ham, rocket and sliced tomatoes in focaccia bread that I bought in Venice.

SqueakyDinosaur · 28/04/2024 21:45

Barbecued enormous prawns at a beach restaurant in Cape Town - the only time in my life, I think, that I've had so much seafood that I've had to give up while there were still prawns to eat!

A picnic of French bread, Dolcelatte and very ripe huge tomatoes on a long trip down to Devon. I think it partly worked because it was a very hot day, so the cheese and the tomatoes were both warm.

A quince sorbet from the London ice cream place Oddono's.

DomingoinLittleOakley · 28/04/2024 21:46

Another vote for feta baked in filo with honey - epic.
Raw courgette strips with olive oil, feta, lemon juice, mint and chilli.

Wrapunzel · 28/04/2024 21:46

In order of meat to vegan;
Fillet steak with Roquefort sauce in a restaurant in Tenerife (I've not seen it anywhere else)
Toasted sesame seed bagel with marmite and cream cheese (I was unconvinced and then obsessed!
Toasted wholemeal pitta with houmous and red onion is just so moreish but the onion is raw so you can taste for hours after!
Also marmite cashews 🤤

FixItUpChappie · 28/04/2024 21:47

Really nice raspberries piled over strawberry yogurt with a generous helping of walnuts and a sprinkle of honey over top....sublime

Barney16 · 28/04/2024 21:48

A rum bahba. Only a cake (if given the chance I would only eat cake) but bloody lovely.

PoochiesPinkEars · 28/04/2024 21:48

Goats cheese on cracker with a fresh sage leaf on it.... Wow, the flavour combo is incredible.
A new sage leaf is best rather than the thicker older leaves, it's one of those where the total is greater than the sum of the parts.
😋😋😋

Auntieobem · 28/04/2024 21:49

Today for lunch I had smokie chowder, it was fabulous

EverybodyLTB · 28/04/2024 21:50

^^ speaking of quince, I had quince jam on a farm shop/cafe in or on the way to Somerset, with proper mature cheddar with crystals, and a ripped up crusty baguette. Freaking stunning, and fabulous British countryside all around. The right amount of warmth - breeze ratio. Perfection

Candleabra · 28/04/2024 21:52

Raspberry pavlova
Smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel
A properly ripe fresh peach

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/04/2024 21:55

Portokalopita (Greek orange cake)

The first time I saw it I thought "Oh how boring" and couldn't have been more wrong. It's not even flour and eggs, but shredded phyllo doused in orange syrup and baked - seriously delicious

Crikeyalmighty · 28/04/2024 21:56

First time I had a really good crème brûlée in France with some superb fresh raspberries on the side .

odddogout · 28/04/2024 21:57

Jayinthetub · 28/04/2024 19:27

Oyster and vinegar Kent crisps - had them on a ferry once and never found them again. Also Yorkshire puddings with golden syrup 😋

These are my favourite crisps ever! Luckily enough, they sell them in my local Waitrose. Want me to send you a bag?!Smile

WishesPromised · 28/04/2024 21:59

Real thick Greek yoghurt with honey and prunes - sublime.

Those red candy grapes. I wouldn't buy them for ages thinking it was expensive gimmick - but they are astonishingly good.
