To ask for foods which are genuinely delicious?

I’ve just tried blue cheese and honey on toast and it’s so delicious it’s genuinely taken me aback. I had the same the first time I ever tried guacamole.

What foods have done the same for you. Not things that are tasty and you enjoy, but that you’ve tried for the first time and genuinely got a shock at how delicious they are?

Blue cheese melted on sweet potato fries.
M&S beef wellington crisps with soured cream and chive dip.
Last night we had scandi meatballs on tortilla chips from Olive magazine, what a bit of comfort food that was! I used M&S tortilla chips (not UPF) and swapped the double cream for low fat cream cheese so it was a bit healthier.

Homemade honeycomb with homemade lemon tart. Also, the first time I had a strawberry was at my Irish uncle’s farm. We went into a field and picked it. It almost blew my head off it was so delicious. Tasted nothing like the ones we get today. The strawberry flavour was so sweet and intense.

This reminds me of when we went raspberry picking at a little farm in Dorset 2 years ago. I haven't had a raspberry picked straight off the plant since I was a child. I forgot how delicious they are and couldn't stop eating them (after I paid for them I mean!). I've started growing them in my garden for this reason!

Got to be chicken, honey, bacon and waffles - sounds rank but tastes lovely

Also haggis. Sounds weird but tastes gorgeous

Haggis is great. Dp makes pork mince, black pudding and haggis burgers and they are the best burgers. Also i do haggis mac and cheese , some in the sauce, and a haggis crumb on top. Yum. I might do that next week.

A gooseberry souffle I had in a fancy restaurant last year. I do not have a sweet tooth but this was so delicious!

Foie gras, slightly crisped on the outside, on top of a well aged rare steak. Please don't judge, it was a different time!
And baklava. Especially the little roll shaped ones with very smooth (maybe cashew?) ground nuts inside ...
Gulab Jamun, still slightly warm.

Edited

Ooh foie gras with fig jam on toasted brioche...the perfect combination. I've not had it for years.

Also (and I know this is terrible) but suckling pig. Dear lord it was the best meat I have ever tasted. I couldn't eat it again as I feel too guilty but it is amazing.

Ready salted hula hoops with chocolate buttons squashed in them.

AdaColeman · 28/04/2024 19:44

If you like blue cheese, try it on plain chocolate digestive biscuits, a taste sensation! Gorgonzola is especially good this way!

Fun Food Fact: Beef carpaccio was invented in the 1950s by Venetian restaurateur Guiseppe Cipriani. He created carpaccio at his Harry's Bar restaurant for the Countess Amalia Nani Mocengio, whose doctor had advised her to avoid cooked meat. Wine Wine

Mortadella and taleggio in a sandwich.

A proper, aged, thick, sweet balsamic vinegar. The good ones are expensive but worth it. Best served with homemade dough sticks, straight from the oven for dipping. Or in summer drizzled over sliced beef tomatoes, with finely diced slivers of red onion, a sprinkle of rock salt and plenty of black pepper.

Pistachio ice cream in an Italian Gelato, I was literally speechless with pleasure!

American style buttermilk pancakes with crispy streaky bacon, maple syrup and topped with a fried egg which has a runny yoke heaven on a plate for breakfast blame my other half for taking me into an OK diner at breakfast time

I’m now remembering going on a euro camp holiday as a kid, and having thinly sliced tomatoes, thinly sliced sweet white onion, basil and olive oil with a sprinkling of salt. I remember it was on a huge flat plate and all laid out evenly. That was mind blowing, especially coming from a land of Turkey twizzlers and a mum who can’t cook/wont cook. It’s a classic flavour combination but sometimes you forget how good the old combos are, and I’ll never forget that first taste of properly seasoned, well paired, fresh ingredients on a plastic table in the sun.

There's a dish I had in Jordan that was essentially raw meat paste ground up with pine nuts and garlic. It sounds revolting but it was sensational. Just couldn't stop eating it.

A warm, ripe peach eaten in the open air, fresh from the tree and bathed in sunsgine, with it's heady scent mingling with fresh hay the whiff of horse too takes me straight back to my childhood.

Salmon sashimi with a little soy sauce

Burrata and tangy, salted baby tomatoes

Plates and plates of fresh gyoza after a few beers in Tokyo

murasaki · 28/04/2024 20:31

Tinned crab mixed with mayo and black pepper and a touch of lemon juice on a buttered toasted crumpet. Or two....

MsLuxLisbon · 28/04/2024 20:33

A homemade Victoria Sponge I just baked. The buttercream I made was out of this world, the secret was a dash of salt and some vanilla extract. So so good.

RobinBobbin · 28/04/2024 20:33

Dates. They are so sticky and sweet, it's hard to believe something so natural is so delicious. I like them chopped on porridge.

I was going to say dates.

FfsJaney · 28/04/2024 20:35

Milk from the farm. Straight out of the chiller but before it's been treated in any way. Absolutely bloody gorgeous. You have to know a dairy farmer to get this though!
