I’ve just tried blue cheese and honey on toast and it’s so delicious it’s genuinely taken me aback. I had the same the first time I ever tried guacamole.

What foods have done the same for you. Not things that are tasty and you enjoy, but that you’ve tried for the first time and genuinely got a shock at how delicious they are?

Bag of fresh hot chippy chips for me - nothing fancy other than loads of salt and vinegar.

MyOtherHusbandIsAWash · 28/04/2024 20:40

Black pudding. I hated the thought of it but it is so very delicious.

We did hummus & roast veg sandwiches a couple of weeks back to picnic with a friend who is vegan. They were so so lovely and have been making regularly since.

I second the brown derby- Wimpy bar in the 80s. I take a bag of crushed hazelnuts to the seaside now just so I can recreate one once a year (nobody sells nuts now) 😂

Truffle toasted finger sandwiches (afternoon tea at sketch)

Proper Turkish Soslu patlican

Roquefort on charcoal crackers

Fresh oysters and scallops on a beach off the coast of Venezuela. We watched them being caught by hand and shucked on a table in the sea. $1 and worth every cent.
Also M&S truffle honey on any type of cheese. ❤️

I’m now remembering going on a euro camp holiday as a kid, and having thinly sliced tomatoes, thinly sliced sweet white onion, basil and olive oil with a sprinkling of salt. I remember it was on a huge flat plate and all laid out evenly. That was mind blowing, especially coming from a land of Turkey twizzlers and a mum who can’t cook/wont cook. It’s a classic flavour combination but sometimes you forget how good the old combos are, and I’ll never forget that first taste of properly seasoned, well paired, fresh ingredients on a plastic table in the sun.

I went to a 1950s cafe in a museum. I ordered an egg sandwich which came hard boiled with butter, sliced tomato and salt. I was genuinely shocked by how good it was. I’d never have an egg sandwich without ketchup, mayo or salad cream and it blew my mind how simple but delicious it was without any condiment.

Sev puri. I have no idea what's in it- our local Indian cafe menu says it is 'a party in your mouth' and gives no other explanation. Oh my God. So delicious. If you ever see it on a menu, eat it. Don't let people tell you it's a good idea to share.

We bought some goats cheese and a jar of Fig chutney from a farm shop yesterday, that was bloody amazing!

mitogoshi · 28/04/2024 21:12

Roasted figs Stilton and honey, ideally on lightly toasted homemade focaccia. I made it as an experimental starter, highly recommend

A drizzle of maple syrup on a salami and nduja pizza. Sweet and salty, and so good.

LostInTheColonies · 28/04/2024 21:29

Thai green curry. Couldn't believe anything could be so delicious when I first tried it - in 1993!
Had a similar reaction to fresh rice paper rolls at a Vietnamese restaurant in France. With dipping sauce - the clear one, not the thick peanut one. And that was even earlier... 1988. Still so memorable.

A proper, aged, thick, sweet balsamic vinegar. The good ones are expensive but worth it. Best served with homemade dough sticks, straight from the oven for dipping. Or in summer drizzled over sliced beef tomatoes, with finely diced slivers of red onion, a sprinkle of rock salt and plenty of black pepper.

Yes! I was given some promotional packs of Mazzetti balsamic vinegar; it was the texture of golden syrup and was divine.

Crispy shredded chilli beef.

My mum's homemade Quiche Lorraine.

Puy lentils.

King prawn puri.

Indian barfi.

A four cheese gnocchi, not sure which cheeses but one of them was definitely blue.

A salad made with smoked trout, radicchio, avocado, artichoke hearts, asparagus and an aioli dressing.
