Do you shower/bath everyday

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 14/04/2024 07:06

Just that really, do you shower/bath daily as an adult that (not ill or has health conditions)

I am asking this as another thread, made me curious.

YIBU- I don't shower everyday, there is no need.
YANBU- I shower everyday as I like to be clean.

@Startingagainandagain its not poor hygiene to shower every second day! That’s A bit extreme.

Why you not call it poor hygiene, why would people not jump into a shower for 2 minutes to wash themselves.

For those insisting they can tell when someone hasn’t showed, how do you know it’s only been 1 day? I know of someone who doesn’t shower for days on end.

I don’t shower daily. I don’t believe I need to. However if I’m going to be in close proximity to others I definitely do.

I think showering twice a day if you haven’t any extra need to such as exercising is total overkill and bad for your skin and the environment.

They will be here in a minute, I am shocked how people who don't shower everyday think that they do not smell, or that we can't tell, when most people can and say they can but we are all just wrong.

What you can smell is people who smell. You have no way of knowing how many days it is they haven’t washed, or if the people you can’t smell have showered that day or a week ago.

cardibach · 14/04/2024 13:53

Onetiredbeing · 14/04/2024 10:14

Sorry but you are the grim one. You go out the entire day and bring all that yuck with you. And surely it's refreshing to start the day with a good clean. The thing I find most disgusting are the people who wash their 'bits' at the basin. You wash your but and private's at the basin where everyone brushes their teeth 🤢. Why not have a 2min shower and just do it properly.

This is nuts. The basin gets cleaned. Nobody puts their teeth on it anyway, or uses water run into the bowl on their teeth.

SoozyWoozy5 · 14/04/2024 13:54

Yes, shower every day, but I don’t wash my hair everyday nor my towels/outer clothes unlike you. Washing is normal. Washing everything in sight, every day, is not.

cardibach · 14/04/2024 13:56

Motheranddaughter · 14/04/2024 10:36

Surely quicker /easier to have a quick shower than to faff about with a flannel

Don’t you have to ‘faff around with a flannel’ in the shower too? I mean, you’ve got to wash the same bits…more in a shower because I, despite being a person who doesn’t shower every day, think it’s pretty grim to get 8n the shower then not actively wash every part of me.

Luxell934 · 14/04/2024 13:58

🙄🙄

Its not gross to shower every other day, even on your period 🙈

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/04/2024 14:01

When we got a water meter I made a conscious effort to cut down on the amount of water we're using. So I now shower every other day in winter, every day in summer. I am post menopausal and not remotely sweaty.

Luxell934 · 14/04/2024 14:04

In my whole life I’ve only ever smelled a handful of people who literally stank when I walked past them or was in close proximity. 99.999% of people I’ve ever been in close proximity to do not smell of anything, good or bad. I’m guessing 99.9999% of people don’t shower twice a day. Wearing unwashed clothes probably smell worse.

VivX · 14/04/2024 14:05

Yes, every day. Twice a day, if I've had to go into Central London for meetings etc.
Three times if it is summer and hot/clammy/on period.

Hair is washed at least every other day. Some times every day but that dries it out.

The smell of unwashed people is unpleasant.

I once knew a woman who didn't shower more than once every week or 10 days. She didn't use deodorant either. She said washing was bad for the skin and natural odour was the best. Yeah, it really isn't.

hobocock · 14/04/2024 14:08

How many more hygiene related threads are you going to start?
YABU Maybe 1 or 2
YABVU 3 or more until people agree with me that it's completely normal to wash towels after every single use; spend an absolute fortune on cleaning products/personal hygiene products; run up huge electricity and gas bills and then wonder why so much household money is disappearing down the drain.

Most people I know shower every day. Most people I know absolutely do not go to the extremes you do regarding washing etc. Most people I know don't have the money to piss up the wall and most people I know do consider the impact they have on the environment and no, buying an electric car doesn't negate everything else.

Brainded · 14/04/2024 14:15

@TheSpoonyNavyReader because I don’t feel dirty?!
I’m a microbiologist so I am well aware that everyone has their own natural microbiome, too much washing can actually disturb this and not give your body a chance to form immunity against them. It disturbs your immune system. Also too much scrubbing and washing can cause an imbalance of “good” bacteria that help protect your skin from getting dry, flaky and from other germs. Those flakes and cracks in the skin then let germs and other allergens, dirt etc to get in and this causes skin infections, allergic reactions etc

but I can tell I needn’t have bothered informing you of all that as you clearly think you are better than everyone else because you wash daily 🙄

wordler · 14/04/2024 14:19

I always think these threads are a bit odd because surely you need to take into account - age of person, level of activity they do on an average day, where they are living etc etc

Those who find they don’t really need a shower every day in their 20s / 30s might be surprised at the difference it makes when you hit perimenopause in your 40s and 50s.

I had to make a big change in showering habits when I moved from the UK to one of the very humid southern states in the USA - summers there you could shower four times a day and you still feel sweaty and unclean. (If you have to go outside or if you don’t have the air conditioner on at full blast)

But even here you don’t need to wash your towels after every shower OP - that was excessive.

YeahComeOnThen · 14/04/2024 14:22

KnittedCardi · 14/04/2024 12:20

OK - Lots of people showering twice a day because of sweaty sex and exercise. So, question is, if you don't have sex, haven't exercised, don't work on a farm, or in a hospital or school, it isn't hot, you've just been sitting at your WFH desk all day in sweatshirt and jeans, do you still feel you need a shower every day??

@KnittedCardi

yes, occasionally I'll skip one in those circumstances, but to me I don't feel fresh & ready for anything. I would shower if I went out, I'd hate it if anyone turned up unexpected etc.

im lucky in that I'm not a smelly person & don't suffer from sweaty feet etc.

I just don't feel fresh, I grew up having a bath or shower daily, to me it's just basic hygiene 🤷🏻‍♀️

RM2013 · 14/04/2024 14:24

Every day but I am at the gym virtually every day so like to shower afterwards

TheSmallAssassin · 14/04/2024 14:26

lovemycbf · 14/04/2024 10:20

I shower every day regardless even if unwell,I'd feel so gross not showering.
I work in a public facing job and all those saying they don't smell if they don't shower every day are wrong,I can definitely smell those that haven't (keen sense of smell unfortunately) especially unwashed dirty hair

But how do you know when everyone last showered? Unless you ask every single person whether you think they smell or not you really can't draw any conclusions about the correlation between showering and smelling.

betterangels · 14/04/2024 14:27

No. It would dry out my skin. If I'm going to be around people, I will always shower in the morning.

Trulyme · 14/04/2024 14:27

I don’t shower everyday because I’m worried about hygiene/smell reasons.

No one should be smelly after only a day or 2 unless they’ve been doing strenuous exercise, messy sex, have a health problem or it’s been very hot.

However, I do shower most days as I either go to the gym or use it as a way to de-stress from my job.

I would never wash my hair every day though.

Trulyme · 14/04/2024 14:30

Luxell934 · 14/04/2024 14:04

It is definitely usually the clothes that are smelling, rather than the person.

Lots of people don’t realise this themselves and think because they’ve washed then they mustn’t smell.

A lot of the time it’s not their fault as they don’t have a suitable place to dry their clothes or they can’t wash them on a hot enough cycle to get the sweat/urine smell out properly.

BernardBlacksBreakfastWine · 14/04/2024 14:45

I really dislike this competitive cleanliness bullshit.

As pp have pointed out, there are various factors at play. People will start to smell based on a few factors:

  • age
  • activity levels
  • environment
  • hormones
  • how long since they last washed
  • the type of fabrics worn

So to claim a blanket rule of ‘you must shower every day otherwise you are disgusting’ as the OP has done is both simplistic and illogical. People are capable of weighing up those factors themselves. As I mentioned, I am kind of sweaty so I know I need to shower every morning. Not so my husband.

Those people you can smell are not necessarily people who’ve skipped your arbitrary and mandatory ‘at least one shower a day’ rule, OP. Think about it.

Lourdes12 · 14/04/2024 15:06

No only once or twice a week

CrocusSnowdrop · 14/04/2024 15:06

"exceptions for health conditions", but you've still made an entire thread inviting people to comment on how much we stink. I shower twice a week, and I don't smell. Or maybe I do, and everyone I come into contact with is secretly judging me, who knows. I can't shower more often. I wash my armpits morning and evening in the sink and apply deodorant in the morning.
Anyway, I'm always baffled by daily showerers who "don't feel fresh". Have you never heard of a sink wash? Much less water and faff.

LBITRL · 14/04/2024 15:11

No, we can't afford the electricity bills. So I have had to cut down to every other day.

Motheranddaughter · 14/04/2024 15:16

for a quick shower I am in and out in 5 minutes
Weekend when I am shaving my legs ,masque on hair, face mask, could be 40 mins
