Do you shower/bath everyday

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 14/04/2024 07:06

Just that really, do you shower/bath daily as an adult that (not ill or has health conditions)

I am asking this as another thread, made me curious.

YIBU- I don't shower everyday, there is no need.
YANBU- I shower everyday as I like to be clean.

There was a thread on here recently where an OP was told she was OTT for washing her entire body with soap and a loofah. This thread refreshingly makes me think mumsnetters are clean 😀

I have a shower every day and mostly wash my hair every day but it's thin so takes 10 mins to dry and nothing further required to look base level acceptable.

There are days where I don't leave the house such as today where I'm going to sit my pyjamas all day. I don't need a shower to do that. There's also the occasional day where I haven't moved much and will have a quick sink wash but that's usually if I'm illl but have to get on.

I shower most days, at worst I would have showered 5 times during the week, sometimes if it’s been hot or I’ve exercised, I could have hopped in 8-9 times. I would never go without if I’d been hot/sweaty and thankfully my DP is the same

puppylovely · 14/04/2024 12:16

Every morning because i run 4 times a week/walk dog. Then before bed because i have a physical job and am actually sweaty and a bit grubby by the end of the day. I also have that type of hair that needs to be washed every day.

Georgie743 · 14/04/2024 12:16

Look I really do understand that smelliness and sweatiness is a spectrum, but surely for anyone having sex you'd want to have showered or bathed fairly recently?!

takemeawayagain · 14/04/2024 12:19

I only bath twice a week, costs a bomb to heat the water and we don't have a shower. I don't smell bad but I don't mind if people think I must. OH does the same and he doesn't smell either. If people smell musty it's probably because of how they're drying their clothes, they're probably staying damp too long. The horrible hard water where we live isn't great for skin or hair, I wouldn't want to be in it everyday and I wouldn't want to be spending the money to heat it.

KnittedCardi · 14/04/2024 12:20

OK - Lots of people showering twice a day because of sweaty sex and exercise. So, question is, if you don't have sex, haven't exercised, don't work on a farm, or in a hospital or school, it isn't hot, you've just been sitting at your WFH desk all day in sweatshirt and jeans, do you still feel you need a shower every day??

jannier · 14/04/2024 12:21

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 14/04/2024 07:13

I also don't understand why people would not shower/bath everyday, I was made out to be a monster because I did. Don't I know what I am doing to the planet!

It wasn't about a daily shower it was the towels washed every time and all the other clothes most people agreed with daily showers ....the amount of shower gel and shampoo was questioned.....I guess the only thing not asked was how long the showers are and the twice a day.

hby9628 · 14/04/2024 12:21

Yes but I don't wash my hair every day so just a quick shower in the morning.

FedUpMumof10YO · 14/04/2024 12:23

Yes every day without fail. Even when ill. Always have done.

Lavenderandbrown · 14/04/2024 12:23

Twice a day every day for over 30 yrs. I use a shower cap at night. I exercise/physical job in healthcare/ sex/ busy working inside and outside my home. Use lotion daily. Can’t imagine standing in front of a sink and washing…for me it would not be quicker or use less water. DH showers daily not always twice a day and it does annoy me and he knows it. And I ABSOLUTELY can tell when someone doesn’t shower. I call it “their scent” and they do smell. They just can’t tell.

Theoldwoman · 14/04/2024 12:25

Of course.
We all do in our house. Why wouldn’t we? It’s not the nineteen sixties.

I would...if I lived alone I probably wouldn't bother but I think if you have a partner and share a bed, it's part of respecting them to go to bed clean and fresh. Nothing to do with sex necessarily.

CarrotPotatoRooster · 14/04/2024 12:26

Bathe twice a week, Sunday and Thursday. Quick splosh at the sink in between.

If you read all my comments on that thread, you will see I said I sometimes shower twice a day not everyday, and I never actually said how much shampoo and shower gel we use.

People said that you did not have to shower daily, or wear clean clothes. Beds can go a month without washing them.

Of course I would shower everyday even if I was working from home, not seeing anyone. As I feel gross not having a shower.

Its all about personal preference and yes I can tell if a colleague has not had a shower or not washed their hair for a couple of days.

For all those saying people cant tell, they can tell.

I can’t start the day without being fresh from top to bottom, including washing my hair.

Same

RamblingEclectic · 14/04/2024 12:35

No, I don't most of the year. I understand why people far more active than I am do, and most of the rest of my household fits into that.

I've cared for family members that physically could not shower daily without a lot of pain, and I've been in that situation myself as well, and I've found fresh clothes, ensuring the laundry is done well, and smaller acts of hygiene like freshening up with a wash cloth or similar and using water to wash after the loo rather than just paper does fine for feeling and smelling clean.

I grew up when it wasn't the norm to shower or bathe every day unless one had a job that made you very filthy. It was a common joke among my mother's generation that kids' baths were more for some peace of having us contained & distracted than hygiene.

I've spent a lot of my adult life where the common refrain on these types of threads of "It's faster to shower" simply wasn't true. Places in the 21st century with bad landlords where a bath involved a kettle and a shower involved spending maybe 10-15 minutes with someone downstairs fighting for the boiler to stay on long enough to get water warm enough to be able to wash and not end up with hypothermia. I'd fight the boiler for others, but I'm fine being a bit grim and using a washcloth much of the time to freshen up during the day and a portable handheld bidet when I use the loo. I feel far more grim just using paper after a shit than going two days without a shower. I also feel far more grim if I don't scrape my tongue well before going to bed even with brushing and flossing - little hygiene acts can make a big difference.

I do rinse off in the shower more than I used to now that I'm in a place with an old electric shower - most reliable and physically accessible I've had, but by far the most expensive electric appliance in the house and it can get a bit weird when the season change - right now the high setting does not alter with the temperature dial, it's just going to fry you which works great for some in my home, and the medium setting refuses to warm above a chill on the warmest part of the dial, it's odd, but manageable, but not always more comfortable at my slow pace than a system I've been using for decades. I still haven't felt a need to shower daily if it's not very warm and/or I'm not being very active, physically or sexually.

pelotonaddiction · 14/04/2024 12:38

But some people cannot wash their hair daily
You can't have walked past every person with coily/kinky/afro hair and thought "ew" Hmm

Concannon88 · 14/04/2024 12:57

I've never gone a day without a shower or bath, apart from as a child maybe? I dont care how often everyone else showers though

Startingagainandagain · 14/04/2024 12:57

I always shower at least once a day. Twice if I have gone to an exercise class/worked hard in the garden. I have short hair so usually wash it once a week.

I have sensitive skin that tends to get quite dry but I could not do without my daily shower and I also find it relaxing.

Frankly I never understand people who don't have a daily shower. That's poor hygiene to me.

MaryMary6589 · 14/04/2024 13:29

Every other day. Makes my skin feel tight and dry if I shower every day. I would always shower after exercising/getting sweaty though. Like a bonus shower.

Rumples · 14/04/2024 07:23

Twice a day without fail - don't feel right if I don't.

Do you live in a hot country?!

zeibesaffron · 14/04/2024 13:34

Yes every day - twice a day if I have been to the gym or swimming 😀

Brainded · 14/04/2024 13:38

@Startingagainandagain its not poor hygiene to shower every second day! That’s A bit extreme.
