To have asked him to choose a different sandwich

Don't know if it's because it's Easter or what but my local co-ops sandwich section was totally barren, only meat sandwiches left (I'm vegetarian). I saw a man go for the last cheese one there was, so I asked him if he was vegetarian and if not, would he mind if I had it? A woman (wife?) appeared and went batshit at me and called me rude.
It made me quite pissed off actually. I wouldn't have a problem with say a gluten free person asking me if they could have the last gluten free sandwich.

You could have just bought rolls and cheese slices if you were that restricted - I think it’s really odd to ask him but her reaction was odd too

doingitbythebookthistime · 30/03/2024 13:06

YABU, snooze ya lose.

MiltonNorthern · 30/03/2024 13:06

You were so rude. He got there first. And I say that as a vegan!

Pigeonqueen · 30/03/2024 13:07

😳 But he was there first…! Just choose something else, surely? There must have been other things you could have had.

CheckeredAliceBand · 30/03/2024 13:07

YABU, sorry. Annoying for you but just because someone eats meat doesn't mean they want to eat meat in a sandwich. I'm a meat eater but would never buy a preprepared sandwich with meat in it.

InTheShallowTheShalalalalalalalow · 30/03/2024 13:08

You were rude.

Asking a random man his dietry requirements so you can assess if his need was greater than yours is arrogant as fuck.

Get a packet of crisps next time.

bakewellbride · 30/03/2024 13:08

I'm a vegan and I vote yabu.

TerrysOrangeScot · 30/03/2024 13:08

I wouldn't ask a stranger like that, I would just kindly say no though if asked. I am not a vegetarian but I only eat certain sandwiches if I pick up the last then that's it. You can always buy rolls and cheese etc.

NuffSaidSam · 30/03/2024 13:09

I think it was ok (perhaps a little strange) to ask.

It would have been absolutely fine for him to say no. The woman who went mad on his behalf was being unreasonable though.

TruthorDie · 30/03/2024 13:09

You sound rude and entitled. He got there first. You either eat another sandwich or make yourself something

ForeverYellow · 30/03/2024 13:09

I wouldn’t have asked personally. Even if he eats meat , a cheese sandwich was obviously his preference . I would find a cheese pasty or something similar .His wife’s reaction was rude and uncalled for .

Cosycover · 30/03/2024 13:09

😂😂😂😂😂😂 no you didn't.
Nobody is that stupid.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 30/03/2024 13:09

I don’t think co-op cheese sandwiches are vegetarian are they?

Flamingo68 · 30/03/2024 13:09

bakewellbride · 30/03/2024 13:08

I'm a vegan and I vote yabu.

Same!

FionnulaTheCooler · 30/03/2024 13:09

You'd have got a no from me. I'm not vegetarian but I dislike the processed meat you get in most supermarket sandwiches so I'd have gone for the cheese one too. What would you have done if you'd got there 30 seconds later and it was already gone?

MrsPoliportsGoose · 30/03/2024 13:10

Ywbu and rather entitled I think, fair play for having the neck to ask.

TextureSeeker · 30/03/2024 13:11

It was a bit of a strange thing to do. I'm not vegetarian but it's rare I eat meat and wouldn't eat it in a sandwich, cold chicken is gross and I don't eat things like ham. I wouldn't appreciate having my lunch choice questioned by someone who thinks their preference not to eat meat all of the time is more important than my preference.

Viviennemary · 30/03/2024 13:11

I think you were cheeky. You didn't even know this person and put him in an awkward position. Totally selfish and entitled YABU. I wouldn't choose a meat sandwich though I'm not a vegetarian.

StormingNorman · 30/03/2024 13:11

That was so weird of you! Fruit, salad, veggie sushi, bag of crisps. You were in a food shop…you didn’t need to stake a claim to a cheese sandwich.

shoppingshamed · 30/03/2024 13:12

That's bonkers, anyone can eat a cheese sandwich and shopping is literally first come first served 😂

ToRecordOnlyWater · 30/03/2024 13:12

@Whatevershallidowithmylife What is in them that would make them not vegetarian? I’m veggie and always used to have them. They’re not vegan obviously but are vegetarian unless I’m missing something?

Medsy · 30/03/2024 13:13

Fair enough, it was only a question!

ADrownedRat · 30/03/2024 13:13

It is rude because you are making a request of a stranger that is a challenge to what they are doing and entitled to do (buy a sandwich).

You then put them in an unpleasant and awkward position of either feeling pressured to hand it over or refuse and feel guilty/challenged.

It's a pretty self centred thing to do really to ask a stranger to hand over goods they have already selected.

They're definitely vegetarian

I would have had a go at you too. It is not acceptable to ask a fellow shopper what is his diet. He may be a meat eater but fancied a non meat sandwich. Very rude of you.
