To have asked him to choose a different sandwich

Don't know if it's because it's Easter or what but my local co-ops sandwich section was totally barren, only meat sandwiches left (I'm vegetarian). I saw a man go for the last cheese one there was, so I asked him if he was vegetarian and if not, would he mind if I had it? A woman (wife?) appeared and went batshit at me and called me rude.
It made me quite pissed off actually. I wouldn't have a problem with say a gluten free person asking me if they could have the last gluten free sandwich.

Maybe she thought you wanted more than his sarnie.

🙄

Theres a joke here somewhere involving sausage.

PaperDoIIs · 30/03/2024 13:27

I think asking is ok but only if you're prepared to listen to a no without any fuss.Trying to decide whether his needs were less than yours, wasn't ok and makes me think you wouldn't have graciously accepted a no. His wife having a go at you wasn't ok either , but swings and roundabouts.

Because you don't buy them because of preference, I don't buy them out of philosophy

Philosophy is a choice. I don't believe this post is real.

I don’t think co-op cheese sandwiches are vegetarian are they?

As long as there's no meat in them ie cheese, butter , bread then they are vegetarian.

Not all cheese is vegetarian

meganorks · 30/03/2024 13:30

I'm clearly in a minority here, but I don't think you are rude to ask. So long as you aren't annoyed if he says no. I wouldn't ever do it myself. But if someone asked me I'd be happy to swap so long as there was something else I liked.
Absolutely no need for the woman to go batshit at you. Or did she just say you have no right to ask?

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 30/03/2024 13:30

The woman overreacted but you were rude to try and guilt the man out of his preferred choice of sandwich

fruitbrewhaha · 30/03/2024 13:31

There’s nothing wrong in asking, Jesus, you can ask and they can say no. Which he did, no harm done. For all you knew he didn’t care which sandwich he had and just grabbed one and that a ham and cheese would have been just as suitable or he says no I fancy this cheese one. No problem. His wife is bonkers.

Autienotnaughtie · 30/03/2024 13:31

@chocolategg oh yes of course I see what they meant now.

Coop cheese sandwich is definitely veggie though

Medsy · 30/03/2024 13:21

I'm hardly going to jump in a train with a loaf of bread am I?!

Imagine the thread that would be made if you did though!

You may need to ask for a seat with a table to make your sand which making easier 😉

RaininSummer · 30/03/2024 13:32

As above. Unless you have checked for v sign or something, cheese is unlikely to be vegetarian because of rennet which renders you moral philosophical standpoint null and void. Asking was v odd.

Autienotnaughtie · 30/03/2024 13:32

I don't think you were rude to ask, but equally he's fine to say no. Wife didn't need to involve herself.

whatsappdoc · 30/03/2024 13:32

...but don't ask a person to give up their table because at the moment you walked past they weren't using it.

Datafan55 · 30/03/2024 13:35

It was worth a try. Really is okay to ask (despite some responses/the poll on here).
Fine for him to say no.
Inappropriate for someone to go batshit at you. Perhaps they knew he'd have given it to you and then been ill from another type (my charitable interpretation).

Medsy · 30/03/2024 13:36

I asked really politely if there was any chance he would change his mind and he seemed to be hesitating when the woman came from behind me and said "excuse me? That is so rude!". I just ignored her and said thanks anyway and good luck to the guy.
If someone was gluten free or could only eat halal or kosher and asked me the way I did, I'd just think sure. Don't see the problem but clearly I'm in the minority.

pickytube · 30/03/2024 13:36

I'm not a vegetarian and the only sandwich I will eat is cheese sandwiches. I hate cold meat. My dc is the same and if there's no cheese sandwiches left then I would buy a roll, slice cheese and make it myself in the street just before picking him up from his club. You asked which is ok but weird to expect but the wife interfering was silly, surely the man had his own voice?

Inyourwildestdreams · 30/03/2024 13:36

This might be the best thread I’ve seen on here in a while. Sorry OP - but you were weird 😂 you were in a shop stocking hundreds of food with plenty you could have eaten!

I’d love to have seen the woman lose her shit over a cheese sandwich though 😊😂

doingitbythebookthistime · 30/03/2024 13:36

Why did you wish him luck? What for?

So you were rude too, wishing him luck??

PotatoPudding · 30/03/2024 13:37

As a life-long vegetarian, I say you were out of order.

Nannyogg134 · 30/03/2024 13:37

You weren't unreasonable to ask, they weren't unreasonable to say no. They were unreasonable to go batshit at you when it's only a question

bakewellbride · 30/03/2024 13:38

'Thanks anyway and good luck' 🤣this is the thread that keeps on giving

MummaMummaJumma · 30/03/2024 13:39

Hi OP, do I think this is the worst thing in the world? - absolutely not. Do I think it would have got my back up?.. yes probably. I get that this must have been frustrating, but as you know now, people are entitled to whichever sandwich they’d like and they certainly shouldn’t have to explain it.

But it’s happened now, it’s a lovely BH weekend and the shine is shining where I am (hopefully where you are too). So I wish you a restful break (of course, with loads of cheese sandwiches 😉)
