To have asked him to choose a different sandwich

Don't know if it's because it's Easter or what but my local co-ops sandwich section was totally barren, only meat sandwiches left (I'm vegetarian). I saw a man go for the last cheese one there was, so I asked him if he was vegetarian and if not, would he mind if I had it? A woman (wife?) appeared and went batshit at me and called me rude.
It made me quite pissed off actually. I wouldn't have a problem with say a gluten free person asking me if they could have the last gluten free sandwich.

I haven’t been on Tattle for a long time but I guarantee this thread will be getting talked about over there

HoldingTheDoor · 30/03/2024 13:39

You wished him good luck with what?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/03/2024 13:40

chocolategg · 30/03/2024 13:29

Not all cheese is vegetarian

The big green V on the Co-op sandwiches is very helpful. As is the information that all Co-op branded cheese that do not carry a PDO requiring the use of animal rennet (eg, Parmesan) is vegetarian.

Medsy · 30/03/2024 13:16

Because you don't buy them because of preference, I don't buy them out of philosophy

Both are personal choices. Neither takes priority over the other

pilates · 30/03/2024 13:41

Yes rude

SmileyClare · 30/03/2024 13:41

In the real world, people don’t go “batshit” in shops if you request something in a friendly polite way.
So either;

a)his wife was mentally unwell or

b)You rudely confronted the man with ARE YOU VEGETARIAN? in a pompous tone which annoyed his wife slightly and you exaggerated the “going batshit” part because you enjoy painting yourself as a victim.

Either way, work on your self awareness and move on now. 😉

BigBoysDontCry · 30/03/2024 13:43

Gluten free I'd completely give up my sandwich for. That person has a medical condition.

Vegan, veggie, halal etc can take a running jump, they are ALL personal choice.

You are very rude and entitled and I'd react the same as the man's wife, even if I was a random bystander.

Fizbosshoes · 30/03/2024 13:43

I'd say it's not unreasonable to ask
But also not unreasonable to think it is weird and/or ignore you

SmileyClare · 30/03/2024 13:44

doingitbythebookthistime · 30/03/2024 13:36

Why did you wish him luck? What for?

Well presumably he’s going to Hell for not being a vegetarian.

maximist · 30/03/2024 13:44

So long as there was something else I fancied there I'd happily have let you have it.

Mrbumpssmile · 30/03/2024 13:45

I think it was a perfectly reasonable question. If I see there's only one left of something and know someone else might need or want it more, I always go for another item (as long as I'm equally happy with the other item). I suppose you were highlighting his lack of awareness/sensitivity by asking, when he could have thought of it himself.

But, of course, he could easily have really disliked the other sandwiches or had allergies...so you did put him in an awkward position!

Wow you are a bloody CF. Your philosophical choices don’t mean you get priority over anyone else

What is a ‘CF’ btw? I don’t even want to share what I say in my head lol

Ethical choices, which aren't the same as tastes or random choices, as they don't feel like choices usually to the person who holds those beliefs.

What? How the hell is he supposed to have known that OP is vegetarian?

‘Cheeky fucker’

Fizbosshoes · 30/03/2024 13:47

I was aggrieved that my local co-op had no Easter eggs at all apart from nasty creme eggs, I didn't check the cheese sandwich situation.

but that is my own fault for being last minute about Easter eggs

liveforsummer · 30/03/2024 13:47

I can't believe you asked that. I'm not surprised the wife said you're rude as it was. Perhaps she knew that's the only thing he'll actually enjoy but knows he's a bit of a pushover.

Anyway, nothing wrong with getting on a train with o kid if bread or a pack of wraps/rolls. Just pay an extra 30p for a carrier bag for the rest and as a bonus you have lunches for the next 2-3 days therefore not encountering this problem again and you'll have saved money.

TheNoodlesIncident · 30/03/2024 13:47

If someone had picked up the last sandwich of a type that I could eat then I would just pick up something else instead, like a pasta pot or bean salad. It wouldn't even have occurred to me to ask the other customer if I could have theirs, no matter how politely I phrased it. Because there are other lunch options which are suitable for consuming on a train, aren't there, you don't have to have that sandwich?

MummyDummyNow · 30/03/2024 13:48

You come across as extreme entitled. And your responses just go on to confirm that. Why ask if you were being unreasonable on here when you clearly don't think you were?

Mrbumpssmile · 30/03/2024 13:48

In terms of vegetarian ethics, it's arguably most ethical to let the meateater take the vegetarian sandwich and buy yourself some fruit, because that way you're keeping meat sandwich sales down...though I doubt it'll make much impact on such a small scale. 😆

‘Cheeky fucker’

🤣🤣 I’ve always said it in my head as ‘cnt fck’. Literally for ages now! Thank you.

DurhamDurham · 30/03/2024 13:48

Hahah I cannot believe how entitled some people are.

Of course you were being unreasonable.

Hoppinggreen · 30/03/2024 13:48

I am not a vegggie but I wouldnt eat one of those suoermarket meat sarnies and if you had asked me to give the cheese one to you I would Politely said no.
If you pushed it I may well have been rude

I was specifically looking g for creme eggs and mine had loads of eggs but none of those! Today was not a good co-op day for me

Ethical choices, which aren't the same as tastes or random choices, as they don't feel like choices usually to the person who holds those beliefs.

And?

That doesn't give their choices any more gravitas than any other person's....however much they feel that it should. 🙄

It also doesn't give them any right to start accosting people in a supermarket so they can judge if their own perceived need outstrips someone else's.
