Over 40 dead and at least 100 injured? Obviously there's a lot going on tonight, but the lack of chat about this is surprising?

If there's another big thread and I've missed it, I hold my hands up. I can't find it.

At least 40 killed as gunmen open fire at concert venue in Moscow

Footage taken inside the auditorium shows up to four gunmen firing automatic weapons as people crouch and hide behind seats.

I hadn't heard about that. Utterly horrific.

LiterallyOnFire · 22/03/2024 20:30

I can't believe even the Guardian are leasing with Kate and the Moscow attack is a few spots down.

Sky News are running coverage live but without commentary.

Last time I tried the BBC they will ss till parsing the Kate statement to fragments too.

Odd set of news priorities going on.

Frightening news from Moscow tonight.. At least 40 killed in theatre shooting www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/5034126-frightening-news-from-moscow-tonight-at-least-40-killed-in-theatre-shooting

The Guardian are saying that the US warned westerners weeks ago not to attend public events in Russia, citing "extremist" threats.

Does that suggest Chechnya is behind this?

soupfiend · 22/03/2024 20:34

Its all over the news, what do you mean no ones talking about it?

sprigatito · 22/03/2024 20:35

I think people are only just taking it in, and we don't know who's responsible so there's not much to discuss yet.

NinaPersson · 22/03/2024 20:35

I hadn’t heard about it. I actively avoid news but that is horrifying. 😢

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/03/2024 20:35

It wasn't all over the news an hour ago, only Sky were covering it then.

I think it's pretty obvious I was talking about on this forum.

I read it earlier and found it shocking but it was breaking news and it said three gunmen and none confirmed dead.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 22/03/2024 20:38

I don't tend to use MN to talk about the heavier things. No need to police people's Friday night chat.

Agreed. News placement seems pretty odd.

News report I watch on this said last time it was them but they are allies now.

Wasn't clear if they were still alluding to the possibility but I imagine with no one taking responsibility so far and how fragile things are reporting needs to be cautious?

TayIorShift · 22/03/2024 20:41

Sitting here in shock watching it with my DH, not sure why you'd expect anyone to say hey let's jump on MN and share the news in case @PossumintheHouse takes offence.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 22/03/2024 20:41

Did Putin just ‘win’ the election again? I say win loosely.

Skippythebutterfly · 22/03/2024 20:45

Most of the ‘terrorist’ atrocities in Moscow over the past few decades have been proven to be false flags, where Putin has blown up a block of flats, blames the Chechens then used it as an excuse to invade Chechnya. We’ll know if it’s a false flag if it’s blames it on overseas countries.

But yes, truly terrible, shocking scenes.

PerkingFaintly · 22/03/2024 20:48

BBC was doing major coverage it by about 6:30pm. That was on the website; not sure where you were looking?

Thanks for link to thread, @Rosestulips

When I turned on BBC R4 at 6.15 Steve Rosenberg was in talking about it saying at that point there was a report of 5 dead. So BBC were carrying it then. By 7pm news it had escalated and on to 8pm news.

Acapulco12 · 22/03/2024 20:57

It’s so horrible, isn’t it. Really upsetting.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 22/03/2024 20:59

Dreadful.

I hate to think of the possible geo-political fall out - as others have said false flags do happen.

I went to Moscow on school trip in 1986 pre-Glasnost. We went to a similar venue to see the Barber of Seville. They are vast places.

Watching Sky news live ATM. Looks like a huge incident but they seem to be getting the fire under control.

Dreadful.

Finosaurtea · 22/03/2024 21:00

Awful , there has been coverage but it's unfolding

I was flicking television channels looking for coverage. BBC news channel were very slow to react, especially as they were just all explaining the Kate statement to each other as nauseum, and generally seemed to be struggling for fresh insights.

LiterallyOnFire · 22/03/2024 21:11

AD nauseum, I mean.

LiterallyOnFire · 22/03/2024 21:13

Yes we've just been saying that here, but it doesn't even have to be false flag. Fighting in a second front would be very challenging for Russia currently. It made me think of the USA arming the Afghanistan so that they could fight USSR.
